In 2013 we worked on a number of exciting projects; workplace, family mediations, victim and offender conferences, community disputes and an estate wide facilitation to help communication between a Housing Association and a Tenants Resident Association. Mediation provides the opportunity for people to be heard face to face by our volunteers; saving referral staff time and helping residents reach their own resolution. CALM mediators have been mediating with 314 residents, to help people discuss problems and feel safer in their homes. We offer home visits and flexible times, including evening appointments, to make the service accessible to all. The restorative facilitators have also done fantastic work on criminal cases involving murder and death by dangerous driving, helping victims get answers to their questions. The Co-ordinators have delivered awareness mediation training to 130 professionals, such as Housing staff, Police and Probation Officers. To help referrers identify cases suitable for mediation. I have been involved with the Ministry of Justice working group and the London Community Mediation Council looking at mediation delivery in the UK and across London. Staff and volunteers have also taken part in a number of research projects sharing their knowledge of restorative justice with EU forums, Canterbury Christchurch University and the London Mayors Office. We thank all our funders, partners and volunteers for their support; we look forward to working further with you in 2014.

CALM were contacted by a father about difficulties between a teenager and his ex- partner. The son and mum were having difficulties and as a result the son moved in with another family member. The parents felt a mediation was needed before the son moved back home. In the mediation there were constructive discussions about the past difficulties and how to resolve these. An agreement was reached to improve on communication in the home, establish household rules and a way of dealing with future decisions. So mum and son could feel secure and knew what to expect from each other. other other.
Case Study - Family Dispute Community Mediation Skills Training By Heather Loebl, LBHF Co-ordinator CALM has been delivering annual Community Mediation Skills training since 1995. In 2013 we trained 36 mediators and restorative facilitators, working towards an accredited qualification. Due to popular demand, we are now delivering the Community Mediation course twice a year.
Awarded the status of accredited trainer in 2010 by OCN (Open College Network), CALMs training provides a comprehensive base for delegates to springboard into the world of mediation, whether it be family, commercial or workplace, or just in order to use the skills with friends and family!
We currently have 50 enthusiastic committed volunteers, ranging from their 20s to their 80s. In return for the time they give CALM, we support them with supervisions and an annual programme of Development Sessions.
Housing bodies are often contacted when a tenant is angry or upset and conversations can be difficult and frustrating. The housing officers who have attended CALMs training gain a crucial insight into their own communication styles, and those of their tenants. They develop practical skills in asking focused questions, resisting triggers that can influence their knee-jerk response to situations, and help in giving appropriate and practical support. One training delegate said:
Excellent trainers, a very valuable and rewarding experience in all.
People from a broad range of backgrounds apply for CALMs training such as interpreters, magistrates or landscape gardeners! If youre interested to find out more about our courses, take a look at the Training section on our website www.calmmediation.org the next course will be in October 2014.
Case Sudy - Restorative Justice
London Probation referred a death by dangerous driving case. The driver had tried to over take a car however had not seen two men crossing the road, he injured one man and the other died. When the driver was released from prison a meeting took place between him and one of the victims families. The brother of the victim, who died, had an opportunity to ask his questions and find out what the driver had been thinking at the time of the incident. Both men agreed actions to try and prevent a further fatality on the road where the incident happened and felt it had been beneficial to talk.
