Brief Industrial Profile of the W.G. District
1. General Characteristics of the District
West Godavari District has a richly cultivated land, divided into the Delta and the uplands. In the Delta, coconut, lemon, rice farming and aquaculture are practiced. In the uplands, oil palm, tobacco, cotton, sugar cane, corn, cashew, mango, banana, and other fruit farming is practiced. Cotton barrage was built on River Godavari at Dhavaleswaram channeling two canals, from which one canal passes through West Godavari, making the soil fertile. In the coastal belt of the district, a large portion of prawns and fish is exported to Japan, and the United States. Eluru is the biggest city in West Godavari District. It is famous for its thriving woolen pile carpet industry. Bhimavaram is a hub for Prawns export. It is the richest town in the State of Andhra Pradesh. Vendra paper mills in Bhimavaram, and Andhra Sugars, a sugar factory, in Tanuku are some of the more famous industries of the district. The district is neglected for industrialization despite availability of raw materials. ONGC started exploration activities in 1980 in the Krishna Godavari basin. Reliance & Cairn are making efforts to extract oil and gas. West Godavari is popularly known as the Granary of India since about 50% of the state's rice production comes from the district. Though the whole country suffers from drought, the district rarely faces such conditions.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area. West Godavari district occupies an area of approximately 7,700 square kilometres (3,000 sq mi).The region mostly has a tropical climate like the rest of the Coastal Andhra region. The summers (MarchJune) are very hot and humid while the winters are pleasant. The rainy season (JulyDecember) is the best time to visit the district with the fields brilliantly green with
paddy crops, rivers flowing with water and the relatively cool climate. The region has long been home to Indian nobles due to its climate and fertile soil, and several zamindar large mansions are scattered around the Godavari area. 4
2 Topography West Godavari District is situated on the west banks of river Godavari and is known as rice granary of Andhra Pradesh. It is bounded by Khammam District on the north, Krishna District on south west and Bay of Bengal on the south. The District has 3 different geographical zones the delta, the upland and Agency track. The Kolleru Lake, which connects the West Godavari District and Krishna District is and extensive shallow depression and is an ideal place for breeding. The Kolleru Lake is identified for development as tourism place.Paddy is the priciple crop of the District besides Sugarcane, Chilles, Coconut and Tobbaco. The Upland area of the District is rich in substantial production of Mango, Cashew, Citrus and other fruits. In costa areas fish culture and prawn culture is developed in the last decade. Fish and prawn is exporting from the Districts to other countries and West Bengal and other north eastern states in the country.
1.2 Availability of Minerals.
The district is rich in Ball Clay (126998 MT), Fire Clay (4815 MT), Lime Stone, Dolamite, Quartz (3086 MT), Road Metal (1039325 MT) and Building Stone (27735MT) Minerals.
1.3 FOREST
The area covered by Forests is 0.812 lakh hectares (1,95,692 acres) forming 10.48% of the total geographical area of the district.
