reverse narrative, meaning
that Chris had to learn the
lyrics backwards.
Many people have tried to
interpret the lyrics of The
Scientist. Some people say
that the song is about a
scientist who begins to
neglect his girlfriend, but
eventually realizes it and
wants to go back to the
start. Others think the song
is about someone who
perceives the world in a
logical way, instead of
emotional, much like a
scientist, and then tries to
apply this logic to his
relationship. (Songfacts) When
Chris was asked about the
song, he said, Thats just
about girls. Its weird that
whatever else is on your mind,
whether its the downfall of
global economics or terrible
environmental troubles, the
thing that always gets you
most is when you fancy
someone. (Wilds)

George Harrison. He really
liked the circular chord
sequence used in the song
and came up with the
repetitive chord pattern
used in The Scientist. The
song was recorded the
same day it was written.
The piano and vocal parts
on the final track come
from the day it was written
and recorded. (ShakenStir)
The song reached #10 on
the UK Charts and #18 on
the US Billboard charts.

Coldplay, an English
alternative rock band, was
formed in London in 1998
by a group of college
friends. They became
famous for their beautiful,
simple songs that pull on
the heartstrings. Their
lyrics have been described
as a mix of joy and
remorse. (Sing365.com)
One of the songs that
shows the perfect mix of a
simple song, and beautiful
lyrics is The Scientist. The
song came off of their
second studio album, A
Rush of Blood to the
Head, which was released
in August, 2002. The
album brought them great
success and they won a
Grammy for Album of the
Year in 2003.
Lead singer, Chris Martin,

Lyrics
Come up to meet you,
Tell you Im sorry,
You dont know how
lovely you are.

I had to find you,
Tell you I need you,
Tell you I set you apart.

Tell me your secrets,
And ask me your questions,
Oh, lets go back
to the start.

Runnin in circles,
Comin up tails,
Nobody said it was easy,
Its such a shame
for us to part.
Nobody said it was easy,
No one ever said it
would be this hard.
Oh take me back to the start.

I was just guessin,
At numbers and figures,
Pullin the puzzles apart.

Questions of science,
Science and progress,
Do not speak as loud
as my heart.
Tell me you love me,
Come back and haunt me,
Oh, what a rush to the start.

Runnin in circles,
Chasin our tails,
Comin back as we are.

Nobody said it was easy,
Oh its such a shame
for us to part.
Nobody said it was easy,
No one ever said
it would be so hard.
Im goin back to the start.

Listening Guide
:00
The song begins with a piano intro with a steady, repeated chord progression of
Dm7, B flat, and F. The bass notes are descending eighth notes, while the right hand
chords ascend at first, and then descend in a quarter note pattern.
:27
Verse 1 begins. The melody is kept simple and is very repetitive. The melody is kept
simple so the listener can focus on the lyrics. The way the descending melody is paired
with the lyrics makes a tentative and sorrowful sound. The piano part remains the same
as the intro.
1:18 The chorus begins with the new chords of B flat, F, and C. The piano pattern remains
the same with the eighth notes in the bass and quarter note chords in the right hand,
except the bass notes ascend, while the chords descend. String instruments come in
the background playing long, drawn out notes. The singing is done in the singers
falsetto in a descending pattern which makes the singer sound vulnerable and hurt.
1:50
Acoustic guitar joins the strings and piano, making a fuller sound. The piano part is the
same as the intro and first verse, and the strings keep playing the drawn out notes. The
acoustic guitar plays the same chords as the piano with accents on beats 2 and 4.
2:17
Verse 2 begins. Drums and electric bass join the piano, guitar, and strings. The
Electric bass has the repeated eighth note pattern that the left hand has in the piano.
There is an even fuller sound because of the number of instruments. The lyrics and
vocal tone sound more confident now because of the number of instruments that are
behind the singer.
2:43
Background vocals are added in the middle of verse 2. They sing ooh in a wave like
pattern while sliding between notes. The string part becomes more prominent,
matching the wave like sliding technique of the vocals.
3:10
The chorus begins with all instruments using the same chord pattern as the previous
chorus. A lower harmony is added to the melody in this chorus. Even though the lyrics
are the same as the last chorus, there is more confidence in the singers tone.
3:42
An electric guitar plays a riff on top of the other instruments. It plays the chords that are
predominant in the song, F, B flat, and Dm7, but is slides to a B flat in the F chord
causing that part to stick out.
4:10
The instrumental part stays the same while the singer oohs in his falsetto in a descending
pattern. The singer now sounds hurt. The strings get slightly louder and have an ascending
pattern.
4:48
The oohs continue while the piano and drums drop out leaving the acoustic guitar, strings,
electric bass, electric guitar, and vocals.
4:56
The song ends with the fading of a drawn out note on the strings.
