A gem of a program
It was a very long, very
cold and very destructive
winter.
The harsh tempera-
tures and extreme weath-
er has taken a toll on
bushes, shrubs, trees and
flowers, and ultimately
forced some of the citys
residents to put their
spring and summertime
landscaping projects on
hold.
Right now were about
a month behind in most

Chairwoman Lilian
Claycomb said. The win-
ter was just very hard on
the plant life.
That said, Claycomb
sends a very clear and
definite message to resi-
dents dont give up.
Everybody knows the
winter was frightful, she
said. The damages that
have been done are unbe-
lievable. Nurseries are ac-
tually running out of
product. The biggest
thing is before you pull
those shrubs out and say
they are dead, look for
any amount of green at
the very bottom. Look for
some signs of life.
Claycomb said that by
now some evidence of life
should be noticeable on
plants that did indeed
survive the rigors of this
past winter.
Dont give up on them
yet, she said. Water and
fertilization in hot weath-
er is going to help more
than anything else. If you
look around our city
youll see shrubs and
bushes that are half
brown and half green. It
may take two years for
these to come back. But if
it does, then it does. Dont
ruin your landscape just
because youre anxious to
tear it all out and put new
in. Its costly and time
consuming to do that, and
you might not have to.
You just have to be pa-
tient in some cases.
Thats all.
Claycomb also advises
residents not to push
their plants.
Its like anything else,
she said. Things will on-
ly grow so far. Dont push
them and feel you can
make up a month that we
lost because of the winter.
Were basically three
weeks to a month behind
in most plants. Dont
push them.
Claycomb and her

It came as a surprise to
St. Clair Shores resident
Craig Manning.
I got a letter at my
house from the county,
and it was sitting on the
kitchen table, Manning
said with a chuckle. My
wife goes, here you go,
and Im thinking Im not
sure I want to open that.
What did I do now? Is it a
tax bill or something?
Then I opened it and it
was a really good thing.
The letter outlines the
fact that Manning was a
recipient of the Macomb
County Board of
C o m m i s s i o n e r s
Outstanding Volunteer
Award for his work with
the Lake Shore High
School Quarterback
Club.
The Quarterback Club,
an organization that
Manning ran for several
years, has raised thou-
sands of dollars for the
football programs at Lake
Shore High School and
Kennedy Middle School.
Money raised through
the Shorian Tastefest and
other fund-raising events
have been used to make
the game safer and more
enjoyable for student-ath-
letes at both schools.
I had a vested interest
for the last five years to
assist in the future of my
kids and kids in our com-
munity, Manning said. I
appreciate the passion
and support of the Lake
Shore Quarterback Club.
It was designed with the
purpose to give to the stu-
dents of the Lake Shore
High School football pro-
gram. Im sure most ath-
letic programs at schools
in the area need pro-
grams like this to contin-
ue.
The honor is a distin-
guished one, and requires
a nomination from a
Macomb County resident
and a minimum of 150
hours of volunteer service
to a nonprofit organiza-
tion.
I dont know how ma-
ny hours Ive logged,
Manning said. But its
something Ive tried to do
all my life.
The award is certainly
more of a lifetime
achievement award to
Manning, whose compa-
ny Take 2 Authentics in
Mount Clemens frequent-
ly helps nonprofits at a
variety of events, but hes
quick to downplay the
honor.
Its nice to be recog-
nized, he said. But its
not why you do it. You do
it because it makes a dif-
ference, because it helps.
Manning believes giv-

Colby Agee doesnt
live too far from
Veterans Memorial Park.
The 33-year old father
of two young boys has
been a St. Clair Shores
resident for the better
part of 10 months.
My wife and I moved
here because of the
schools and the activities
mostly, he said. Were
a young family and we
wanted to be in a city
that could grow with the
boys and offer some-
thing for them as they
get older.
The park is less than a
half mile from Agees
house and was a draw to
him and his wife,
Aubrey.
This Friday, June 27, e,
the Agee family is going
to be reaping the bene-
fits of their new locale
when they, along with
dozens of other resi-
dents in and around
Veterans Memorial Park,
enjoy the 2014 First
State Bank St. Clair
Shores Fi reworks
Extravaganza from
their own yard.
Were having a cook-
out party, he said enthu-
siastically. Ive been
looking forward to this
for months. Weve got
about a dozen friends
coming over.
Agee said folding
chairs and a dish to pass
around are the only re-
quirement he asks of
friends joining the fun.
Im sure well walk to
the park for a little
while, he said. It
sounds like theres going
to be a lot things to do in
there. But for the fire-
works show itself, and
for dinner, were going
to be here at home.

all kinds of landscapes
over the years, from very
elegant and simple de-
signs to the elaborate and
complicated.
The key however, is to
know what type of land-
scape suits your lifestyle.
Do not overdo it, she
said. Its one thing to see
the neighbor down the
street who might have
this lavish garden, but
maybe you work five days
a week and that neighbor
is retired. They have time
to take care of this gar-
den, you may not.
Theres nothing worse
than someone going out,
spending lots of money,
and putting in an elabo-
rate garden or land-
scape, she said. Then
not maintaining it. Plants
grow. They need care.
Maintenance is so impor-
tant. Dont do too much.
Some of the nicest land-
scape is simple because it
can be maintained, she
said.
There are houses out
there that may only have
a half a dozen plants,
Claycomb said. But its
beautiful because its
maintained and its so
nicely done.
Clean up of the yard
and landscape is the first
step, Claycomb said, and
she emphasizes to resi-
dents how important it is
to landscape in stages.
Everything doesnt
have to be done at once,
she said. Do this part this
year, then another part
next year and so on.
Thats a great way to con-
serve money and thats
even more important
when youre starting out.
Be patient. Youll get
there eventually.

ing back is natural not
only for him, but every-
one, and that each person
has the capacity to make
a difference in the world.
Theres something out
there that grabs you, that
grips each of us, he said.
Then you gotta have the
people to surround your-
self with, you have to
have the passion for that
something. You dont
need 100 people, you just
need a small handful of
people with the same pas-
sion. Then you can make
something happen. Its
100 percent of the people
working in the same di-
rection. Thats all it takes.
Its not as hard as people
think it is.

I think its so great to

Know Your Skin

Summers warmer days are
fnally here, and if you are like me
you are getting outdoors when
the weather cooperates. Have you
been wearing your sunscreen?
In June, 2012 the FDA
established a standard test for
over-the-counter sunscreens
making it necessary to pass
the Broad Spectrum test that
protects against both ultraviolet B
radiation (UVB) and ultraviolet A
radiation (UVB). SPF measures
how well a sunscreen will protect
your skin from turning red as a
result of exposure to ultraviolet B
(UVB) rays. Sunburn is primarily
caused by UVB. Both UVA &
UVB can cause sunburn, skin
cancer, and premature aging.
Dermatologists recommend that
when selecting a sunscreen, you
look for an SPF of 30 or greater.
But SPF is not the only thing
to consider when selecting sun
protection.
Under the new regulations,
sunscreen products that protect
against all types of sun-induced
skin damage will be labeled
Broad Spectrum and SPF 15
(or higher) on the front.
What are you going to be doing
in the sun? For casual use, most
any broad spectrum sunscreen
will do and there are numerous
multi-use sunscreens that I like,
including makeup with sunscreen
and moisturizers with sunscreen.
When active, consider sunscreens
that maintain their potency when
you are sweating or are in the
water. Remember to reapply afer
swimming or sweating, or every 2
hours.
To learn more about sunscreen
use, contact your dermatologist,
or call us at Eastside Dermatology,
Dr. Lisa Manz-Dulac and
Associates.
Eastside Dermatology has
of ces in New Baltimore and
Grosse Pointe. You can reach
them at (313) 884-3380 or

THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 3A
Each year, one summer-
time parks and recreation
program seems to stand-
out.
The Special Needs
Summertime Playground
Program is once again in
full swing, and once again
its one of the citys true
gems.
Were really proud of
what that program is, St.
Clair Shores parks and
recreation director Greg
Esler said. Its just an
amazing thing.
Since 2004, Jamie
Harbison has been in-
volved with the program
in some capacity.
I started in 2004, she
said. I was a counselor
when I started and now
Im the director of the pro-
gram. I can honestly say
that Ive enjoyed just about
every minute of it, too.
Each week, from the
middle of June through
the middle of August,
about 50 children take
part in the Special Needs
Playground Program,
Harbison said.
We have kids with au-
tism, Downs Syndrome, a
huge range of emotional
impairments and cogni-
tive impairments,
Harbison said. And they
range from 6 to 26 years
old. So theres a big range
in there, too.
With a camper to coun-
selor rate of about 2:1,
Harbison said the counsel-
ors on her staff are critical
to the programs success.
Many of the counselors
are college students who
want to go into education,
or speech, or occupational
therapy, something like
that, she said. So this is
something theyre learn-
ing from as well as helping
out with. The program
couldnt exist without
them though, it really
couldnt.
Harbison herself is a
special education teacher
in the Van Dyke Public
Schools district.
The campers sign up for
the program, which is lim-
ited to 50 participants, on a
weekly basis, Harbison
said, with a variety of ac-
tivities and even field trips
already mapped out by her
and the staff.
We go to the pool on
Mo n d a y s a n d
Wednesdays, she said.
And we have field trips
during the week. Crafts,
dancing, and other activi-
ties are also part of the
weekly routine.
The program has grown
exponentially over the
years, Harbison said, and
its widely considered to
be one of the top special
needs playground pro-
grams in the state.
That said, running such
a program is expensive.
We have fundraisers,
she said. We have to.
Car washes, Coney
events and concerts are
just a few ways the pro-
gram raises much-needed
funds to operate the pro-
gram.

Playground Program

Local friends
launch
inspirational
business
For best friends
Jennifer Raybaud and
Melissa Emanuel, the
idea of launching a busi-
ness together was a crazy
notion.
I think for the first
three years we knew
each other we avoided
each other, Raybaud
said. So we didnt really
start off on the great foot.
But about three years
ago we started to like
each other, and for the
last two and a half years
weve gotten really
close.
The pair soon became
the best of friends and
from that their company,
Lose Your Excuse Now!
(l oseyourexcusenow.
com).
The local company cre-
ates workshops, con-
ducts seminars and de-
velops activities that help
people live life to the full-
est, Raybaud said.
Its about living your
life fully, Raybaud said.
Its about aspiring to
and accomplishing the
things that make you
happy.
One of the duo's cur-
r ent wor kshops,
Aspirations Assembled,
has been helping people
all over the area create a
bucket list of sorts aimed
at helping people conjure
up big dreams and create
list of things people long
to accomplish the most.
Weve done these
workshops and have
heard back from people
who are already starting
to accomplish these
dreams, Emanuel said.
Weve had people start
to take ballroom dancing
lessons. Weve had peo-
ple finally take that
dream cruise. Weve
heard back from people
making this happen.
Theres something about
putting it on a tangible
list, about putting that list
together.
The workshop calls
each goal achieved a
pin, and dropping these
pins is the goal.
Currently, the compa-
ny works with organiza-
ti ons, compani es,
churches and clubs con-
ducting workshops and
seminars for groups.
But the womens aspi-
rations stretch beyond
the city of St. Clair
Shores and the surround-
ing areas.
Why cant people all
over America have their
goals, dreams and aspi-
rations defined and artic-
ulated on something tan-
gible? Raybaud said. So
they can celebrate drop-
ping those pins and start
living life fully. Thats
what its all about.

6A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014
For a decade, Erin Stahl
has led the charge to
clean up four key, and of-
ten over overlooked, parts
of the city.
The intersections at 9,
10, 11 and 12 mile roads
and I-94 are the gateways
in St. Clair Shores.
Its really the first im-
pression people get when
driving into the city,
Stahl said. We want
these areas to be as clean
as they can be. So thats
why we get out there.
Since the programs in-
ception, which came as a
result of an idea Stalh had
while she was the council
liaison to the citys
W a t e r f r o n t
E n v i r o n m e n t a l
Committee, more than
500 volunteers have col-
lected in excess of 600
bags of trash from these
intersections, Stahl said.
Its been incredible,
she said. The community
has been so supportive of
this over the years. And
many times its a family
affair for people. Parents
have come out with their
children and cleaned up.
Its great.
Stahl noted that al-
though the task continues
to be a challenge in terms
of the headway the group
makes each year, the vol-
unteers have been amaz-
ing.
Theres always going
to be trash to clean up
there, and that hasnt
changed in the 10 years
since we started, she ad-
mitted. But, to see the
amount of volunteers
grow. It really makes me
feel good.
It certainly isnt the
most glamorous volun-
teer duty in the city, but it
is vital, and Stahl said that
people are appreciative.
We have people stop
and thank us while were
cleaning up, she said.
Weve even had people
pull over and donate $5 in
the past. That really
makes us feel like what
were doing is worth
while.
Stahl was quick to point
out that none of it would
be possible without help.

Committee, Joe St. John
in particular, have been
very supportive, Stahl
said. Really, without their
support it wouldnt hap-
pen.
The next clean up date
kicks off at 10 a.m.
Saturday, July 12, with the
group meeting at a park-
ing lot at 10 Mile and I-94,
she said.
People can just show
up there a little before 10
a.m. that morning, she
said. Or they can call
(586) 774-8181.
Stahl added that two
hours on a Saturday is
more than just about
cleaning up.
We have a lot of fun,
she said. And some of the
things weve found over
the years, its crazy.
A contest amongst vol-
unteers runs each clean-
up session. A prize is usu-
ally handed out for the
most unique item.
Over the years weve
found all kinds of things,
she said. Weve found
love letters from the
1970s, an engagement
ring, a cordless home
phone, a Brad Paisley gui-
tar pic, money, and lots of
other things that end up
as funny stories about the
unusual things our volun-
teers find. its really a
good time for everyone.
PHOTO COURTESY OF MACKINAC STATE HISTORIC PARKS
Fort Holmes on Mackinac Island is seen in this image circa late-1930s provided
by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission. Other than an earthen mound
and a single gate from the wooden stockade, no part of the fort remains. A
$500,000 reconstruction project of the fort, which played a key role in the 1814
Battle of Mackinac Island between the U.S. and Britain, will begin this summer.
Thousands of vacation-
ing tourists from
Michigan and around the
world will soon have an-
other attraction to visit on
Mackinac Island.
Fort Holmes, site of the
Battle of Mackinac Island
during the War of 1812,
will be rebuilt and re-
stored in a $500,000 proj-
ect expected to start this
summer the 200th anni-
versary of the battle in
which the forts name-
sake, American Major
Andrew H. Holmes, was
killed. Earlier this month,
the Michigan Legislature
approved $250,000 in
state money to support
the project. The other
half of the money is being
raised by a nonprofit or-
ganization, Mackinac
Associates, which sup-
ports the various historic
sites on and around
Mackinac Island.
This is one of the most
exciting preservation an-
nouncements in years,
said Dan Heaton, author
of Forts & Fields: A
History of Michigans
Military Past.
The work done at Fort
Holmes not only allows
new generations to learn
the history of the region,
but further enhances the
Mackinac regions status
as a vacation destination.
The Fort Holmes proj-
ect builds on the cultural
and heritage pieces of
our states Pure Michigan
campaign, so this appro-
priation is an investment
in our states history and
the tourism that it helps
generate, said State Rep.
Frank Foster, R-Petoskey,
who helped secure the
state appropriation for
the project.
First built as Fort
George by the British
Army, Fort Holmes is lo-
cated on the opposite
side of Mackinac Island
from Fort Mackinac.
Thousands of visitors
pass through the gates of
Fort Mackinac very year
and the forts gleaming
white limestone walls are
among the most iconic
images of Michigan.
During the War of
1812, the British caught a
small U.S. garrison un-
aware at Fort Mackinac,
causing the Americans to
surrender the fort and re-
treat from the island. To
reinforce the island, the
British built an earth and
wood fort and block-
house on the islands
highest point and named
it after the king. Two
years later, on Aug. 4,
1814, a large American
force invaded the island,
but was easily beaten
back by the smaller
Bri ti sh defenders.
Despite the setbacks on
Mackinac Island, the
War of 1812 fort to be restored

Special Writer
signing of the Treaty of
Ghent to end the war, in
December 1814, gave the
young United States con-
trol of the region that is
now Michigan and sever-
al surrounding states. In
the summer of 1815, the
Americans returned to
the island and quickly re-
named Fort George in
honor of Major Holmes.
At the time, the Straits
of Mackinac region was
the economic center of
the entire Midwest,
Heaton said. The impor-
tance of military control
of the forts on Mackinac
during the late 18th and
early 19th centuries can-
not be overstated.
After the War of 1812,
Fort Holmes was al-
lowed to fall into disre-
pair and was even used
for target practice at
times by American sol-
diers assigned to the
much larger Fort
Mackinac. During the
Mexican-American War
and the U.S. Civil War,
the U.S. garrison essen-
tially left Mackinac
Island with only one
U.S. soldier left on the
island to care for both
forts.
In 1904, shortly after
Mackinac Island be-
came part of the state
park system, the Fort
Holmes blockhouse was
rebuilt. After it was de-
stroyed in a fire, the en-
tire stockade, block-
house and earthworks
were rebuilt during a
public works project
during the Great
Depression. Those facil-
ities were never main-
tained and fell into ruin.
With the exception of a
gate in the stockade and
an earthen mound, the
forts ruins were re-
moved or buried in the
late 1960s. The new res-
toration project will rep-
resent the first signifi-
cant work done on the
site in almost 50 years
In 1875, the govern-
ment land on Mackinac
Islandencompassing
50 percent of the is-
landwas designated
the second national park
in the United States. It
was turned over to the
State of Michigan in
1895, bec omi ng
Michigans first state
park. At that time, the
state legislature created
the Mackinac Island
State Park Commission
to be stewards of the
park and its many his-
toric structures. Due to
the commissions ef-
forts, parkland now en-
compasses more than 80
percent of Mackinac
Island, which includes
1,800 acres. The com-
mission also oversees
and manages parks on
the mainland. The
Mackinac Island State
Park Commission is re-
sponsible for a com-
bined 2,500 acres of
par kl and wi t hi n
Mackinac State Historic
Parks, over 110 build-
ings, and approximately
1.7 million artifacts.
We have a lot of fun, she said. And
some of the things weve found over the
years, its crazy."

1B AUTOMOTIVE | 3-5B CLASSIFIEDS
SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014
Volkswagen of America
recently announced the
early arrival of the all-new
2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI
in U.S. dealerships. The
new GTI is bigger, safer,
lighter, more powerful and
fuel-efficient than its pre-
decessor.
The new GTI redefines
the hatchback category
with enough space for five
adults and more trunk
space than any U.S. mid-
size sedan. It also features
Volkswagens EA888
2.0-liter turbocharged and
direct-injection TSI en-
gine, providing 210 horse-
power and 258 pound-feet
of torque.
Standard equipment of
the GTI also includes a
new Driving Mode
Selection feature, VW Car-
Net connected services, a
touchscreen infotainment
system, a leather-wrapped
multifunction steering
wheel, ambient and foot-
well lighting with LED
reading lights, and LED fo-
glights.
Pricing for the 2015 Golf
GTI starts starts at $24,395
for the entry-level S trim in
two-door form with six-
speed manual transmis-
sion.
The seventh-generation
Golf TSI and TDI become
available in July and in ar-
ea dealerships this August,
celebrating 40 years since
Volkswagens iconic
hatchback debuted in the
United States. The 2015
Golf TSI and TDI come in
two or four doors and with
two powertrains: the
EA888 1.8-liter turbo-
charged and direct-injec-
tion four-cylinder TSI en-
gine mated to a five-speed
manual or a six-speed au-
tomatic transmission; and
the new EA288 2.0-liter
turbocharged and direct-
injection four-cylinder TDI
Clean Diesel, fitted with a
six-speed manual or a six-
speed DSG dual-clutch au-
tomatic transmission. This
is the first time the entire
Golf lineup will feature
powerful and efficient tur-
bocharged engines. The
Golf TSI gains up to 6
miles per gallon, 20 per-
cent on manufacturer
estimated highway fuel
economy compared to the
2.5-liter model it replaces.
This new-generation
Golf has grown in size yet
dropped in weight by up to
79 pounds, despite a pleth-
ora of new and upscale
features. Volkswagen in-
troduces its Modular
Transverse Matrix, MQB,
vehicle platform to the
U.S. market. The MQB ar-
chitecture allows for a
more cab-backward de-
sign, which gives the new
Golf a more upscale ap-
pearance while retaining
The all new Volkswagen Golf
classic design cues from
the Mk 1 and Mk 4 Golf
models.
The limited-availability
entry Golf Launch Edition
two-door with manual
transmission starts at
$17,995, plus a $820 desti-
nation and handling
charge. The new entry
Golf has a turbocharged
and direct-injection four
cylinder as the base en-
gine, along with a stan-
dard 5.8-inch touchscreen
infotainment system,
Bluetooth connectivity, a
Media Device Interface
with iPod integration, and
SiriusXM Satellite Radio.
The Automatic Post-
Collision Braking System
is standard on all Golf
models, while available
new comfort and conve-
nience features include the
Fender Premium Audio
System and Climatronic
automatic air condition-
ing.
At the launch of the TSI
and TDI, Volkswagen will
offer about 650 SE four-
door Golf Sport models.
The Golf Sport will be
equipped with the six-
speed automatic transmis-
sion and a lighting pack-
age that includes standard
Bi-Xenon headlights. The
Sport model is visually en-
hanced with a bodykit that
includes a front lip spoiler,
side skirts, a rear valence,
a larger rear spoiler and
chrome exhaust tips.
Pricing starts at $26,930,
plus $820 for destination
and handling charges.
A panoramic tilt and
slide sunroof is available in
the Golf S with sunroof
and Golf TDI SE trim lev-
els. Regardless of whether
the TSI or the TDI engine
is selected, all SE trim
models are equipped with
heatable front seats, a
rearview camera and
Fender Premium Audio
System.
The Golfs turbocharged
1.8-liter EA888 engine pro-
duces 170 horsepower at
4,500 rpm and 200 pound-
feet of torque. Because the
broad swathe of torque
starts at 1,600 rpm and
lasts until 4,400 rpm, the
engine offers better accel-
eration as well as helping
to deliver better fuel econ-
omy and lower emissions
than before.
Augmenti ng the
EA888s 16-valve, dual-
overhead-camshaft layout
is variable cam phasing on
the intake side. The single-
scroll IHI turbocharger
feeds intercooled air
through the aluminum-al-
loy crossflow head down
into the cylinders, where it
meets fuel delivered by a
high-pressure direct-injec-
tion system.
The 1.8-liter TSI engine
is mated to either a tradi-
tional five-speed manual
gearbox or a six-speed au-
tomatic transmission that
is optional on the S and S
with Sunroof models and
is standard on the SE and
SEL. The EA288 TDI
Clean Diesel sends its
power to the wheels
through either a six-speed
manual gearbox or a DSG
dual-clutch automatic
transmission.
