ENGINE BLOCK REMANUFACTURING

Below are the 16 steps we use in our engine block remanufacturing process. You can scroll down to
view all steps or use the drop box to go directly to a particular step. Pressing the red arrow buttons
will bring you back to the top of the page.

STEP 4) ENGINE BLOCK MAGNAFLUXING
Magnetic particle inspection is the most definitive method of detecting cracks and imperfections in
any ferrous engine parts. This procedure, as part of our engine restoration services, assures the
highest quality cast iron blocks. The next process is pressure testing, but first, let us explain how
aluminum blocks are cleaned, pressure tested and checked for casting defects.

It seems as if many cylinder heads are doomed to crack from the very start because of their
lightweight construction and design. Aluminum overhead cam (OHC) heads, in particular,
are often found to be warped as well as cracked. But so too are many pushrod cast iron
heads.

One of the causes of cracking in cast iron heads is stress created when the valve seats are
induction hardened. The concentrated heating process that hardens the valve seats also
creates residual stresses in the head that may cause it to crack later even if the engine
has never overheated. The cracks typically form where stresses are highest, which is often
between the valve seats.

Internal parts of engine block
1 crank shaft attach to
2piston rods attach to
3piston

As the crank shaft turns it causes lift to make pistons up and down
At the top of the crank shaft, is the cam shaft connected with a timing belt
cam shaft opens and closes the valve
Spark plug produces spark for combustion
Inlet and outlet valve

How the combustion creates piston motion
4 stroke
Intake stroke the - inlet valve Is open, and the fuel air mixture is drawn in as the piston travels down
Compression stroke inlet valve is close, and the piston travels back up the cylinder compressing the
fuel air mixture just b4 the pistol reaches the top of its compressions stroke, a spark plug emits a sparks
to combust the fuel air mixture
Combustion stroke the piston in now force down by the pressure wave of the combustion of the fuel air
mixture the engines power is derive from this cycle
Exhaust stroke the exhaust valve is open and the piston travels back up expelling the exhaust gases to
the exhaust valve, at the top of the stroke the exhaust valve is closed,

This process is repeated,
