The Germantown School Board gave the go-ahead June
23 for offering an Advanced Placement course in Physics 1
beginning in the 2015-16 school year.
Advanced Placement courses are courses taken by high
school students that can turn into college credit if they score 3
or higher on a test that has a 1-5 scale.
According to information previously provided to the board
by high school science department Chair Michelle Griffin-
Wenzel, the AP Physics curriculum is algebra and trigonometry
based and is structured around the big ideas of physics,
which encompasses core scientific principles, theories and
processes of the discipline.
In correspondence to the board, Griffin-Wenzel stated the
course would be targeted toward juniors and seniors interested
in health-related college majors which require a semester or
year of college physics, engineering majors or non-science
majors who could bypass a science course in college by getting
a successful score on the AP exam.
The board also approved a change in Project Lead the Way
courses, replacing biotechnical engineering with biological
engineering. The change will take place starting with the 2015-
16 school year.
Donations accepted
The board accepted two donations June 22: $2,401.25
from the Germantown Warhawk Band Boosters to be used for
the purchase of iPads in the AP music theory cass at the high
school and $200 from the Wells Fargo Community Support
Campaign on behalf of County Line Elementary School parent

The Pauline Haass Public Library, serving
Sussex and Lisbon, will be installing person-
alized bricks in the area around the entrance
sculpture this fall. The deadline for ordering
is Friday, July 18.
Forms for brick purchase are available at
the library or online at www.phplonline.org
and can be personalized with two or three
lines up to 14 letters each. Many people
have purchased bricks as memorials to fami-
ly members, or in celebration of birthdays,
marriages and retirements. Others simply
include their own names. For ideas, Library
Director Kathy Klager suggests looking at
the bricks already in place or calling her at
(262) 246-5180 for help with wording or
spacing.
Each brick costs $110, and orders must
be pre-paid. Approximately $80 goes to
help the library purchase additional books
and other materials. Donors can specify
adult, young adult, or children's materials, or
simply designate the money to go to the area
of greatest need.
For ore information, contact the library,
N64 W23820 Main St., Sussex, at (262)
246-5180.

Representatives from the Germantown
School District Destination Imagination (DI)
program thanked the School Board for their
support June 23 while providing an update of
how the teams did at the International compe-
tition.
According to the Destination Imagination
Web site, the activity is intended to develop
opportunities that inspire the global communi-
ty of learners to utilize diverse approaches in
applying 21st century skills and creativity.
There are seven challenges or areas of
competition, and each team can have up to
seven students. The season begins in fall and
ends with the Global Finals, which was held
May 21-24 in Knoxville, Tenn.
Mary Bykowski, the district Destination
Imagination coordinator, thanked the board
for its support of the program and provided a
booklet detailing how Germantown did at the
Global Finals. Bykowski said that Germantown
began the season with 29 DI teams in the
region, 11 of which went on to Global Finals.
Brenda OBrien, director of teaching and
learning, added that most of the Germantown
teams finished 20th or higher at the finals.
Bykowski explained that the teams began
fund raising when they were formed in the fall
and continued to raise funds throughout the
year, even after the board committed support
for the program.
At the April 28 School Board meeting the
board agreed to pay for $32,287.50 for reg-
istration, meals and lodging and $13,350 for
transportation for the finals. The funds came
out of the Board of Education contingency
fund.
You can be very proud of your teams that
went to Global Finals, Bykowski said.
In addition to the competition, three
Germantown DI teams also hosted DI teams
from China during the Global Finals. Bykowski
explained the Germantown students got to
know their international competition on a more
personal level and traded gifts as well as
talked about the DI season.
In addition, two Germantown High School
seniors participated in the DI graduation cer-
emony, an event that included 400 seniors at
the high school and college level.
We have a very supportive group here in
Germantown, be it our parents, our staff at our
schools, all our volunteers, the School Board
and the district administration, Bykowski said.
Two DI students also spoke to the board.
Megan Stewart explained that she was part
of the Pint Sized Picasso team that competed
in the The Tension Builds competition.
Stewart explained that teams in that category
had to build a structure out of three materials
that had to be 7.5 to 9 inches tall, weigh less
than 120 grams and could resist the force of
two tensions.
Abby Liker said she and Stewart have par-
ticipated in DI for four years.
We think its so much fun because we can
try many new ideas and skills that weve
learned from school, Liker said. Liker said her
team built more than 50 structures to test while
brainstorming ideas for a story script and pres-
entation.
She said the team competed against 75
other teams at Global Finals and finished 13th.
Destination Imagination members thank board for support

Marketing students at UW-
Whitewater remain at the top
For the 11th time in 36 years, the University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater American Marketing
Association earned International Chapter of
the Year honors at the conference in New
Orleans, April 10-12. About 350 chapters in
North America participated.
Hartford, Wis.: Zachary Selden, a junior
operations and supply chain management
major, was part of the outstanding team.
Germantown, Wis.: Samantha Hoerchner,
a senior marketing major, was part of the out-
standing team.
To receive the recognition, students needed
to compose a stellar annual report -- a 20-
page document that outlines the chapter's pro-
fessional development, community service,
fundraising, membership data and communica-
tions. Students started collecting data and writ-
ing sections of the report at the beginning of
the academic year.
AMA provides opportunities for network-
ing and professional experiences outside the
classroom.
Unlike previous years, UW-Whitewater
technically could not compete against other
schools.
"We won International Chapter of the Year
last year. AMA adopted a new rule that when
you're selected, you aren't eligible to compete
next year," explained Jimmy Peltier, professor
of marketing and adviser. "However, if your
annual report is of high-quality, you are award-
ed a two-year reign."
Because of its excellence, UW-Whitewater
is considered part of the "platinum circle." Only
two other schools have achieved that status --
Texas State University and University of
Pennsylvania.
UW-Whitewater DECA wins
"Chapter of the Year," succeeds in
nationals
The following students contributed to the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Collegiate
DECA winning "Chapter of the Year" at the
state conference from March 5-9.
Slinger, Wis. - Rebecca Wilkes, a senior
finance major
Colgate, Wis. - Gary Hackney, a senior
information technology major
DECA is a professional business organiza-
tion that focuses on regional, state and nation-
al competition, giving students opportunities to
take their skills and apply them to real world
scenarios.
"Chapter of the Year" is awarded based on
five criteria: social intelligence, civic conscious-
ness, vocational understanding, leadership
development and overall competition success.
"When we were announced, the emotions
were indescribable," said Brett Guendel, presi-
dent of the chapter. "UW-Whitewater DECA
has done a great job of maintaining the service
events we consistently participate in, while also
adding new ways to give back to the commu-
nity."
Derrick Travis Graduates from
Chadron State College
Derrick Travis of Jackson, Wis. graduated
from Chadron State College with a Master of

tution's commencement exercises May 10.

ed in the Armstrong Physical Education
