THANK YOU!

How nice everything has been

for my arrival here at Christ the King. I appre-
ciate you making my first few days here so spe-
cial. The move has been a bit traumatic for
me, as I have had many boxes and bags full of
things and now I must try and find where
those things are at. I know it will be awhile,
so keep me in your prayers as I settle in here. Your openness
has been a blessing to me. I am thankful for having Bishop
Conlon assigning me to such a fine parish.

Summer is moving along, and the 4th of July celebrations
will soon be upon us. We are blessed to be living in such a
great nation. I encourage you to pray for our country every
day. Our freedoms should not be taken for granted. The parish
will celebrate mass on the 4th of July, on Friday, July 4, at 9:00
in the morning. If you are looking for something special to do
with your family as you begin Independence Day weekend, why
not come to mass that morning.

Again, I thank you for helping me in my transition. I pray
that in your transition all may be going well. The Lord calls us
to do His work; and there is plenty of work to be done. May
God bless you in your Summer activities.

Gods peace..Fr. Jeff

Lord, teach me to seek you, and reveal yourself to me when I seek you. For I cannot seek you unless you first
teach me, nor find you unless you first reveal yourself to me. Let me seek you in longing and long for you in

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today is an exceptional event on our calendar: the Thir-
teenth Sunday of Ordinary Time is eclipsed by a solemnity
honoring two saints who didn't spend much time together in
their earthly ministry, and who have distinct feasts so they
probably don't mind sharing this one. Yet each suffered a
similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution
of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction
of many of the residential neighborhoods in service to his
building projects, and when the homeless began to look for
someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Chris-
tians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vati-
can hill. Excavations (called scavi) under the Vatican basil-
ica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the
place of his death. Paul, a Roman citizen, was later granted
a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast
b a s i l i c a o n t h e c i t y ' s o u t s k i r t s .
Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough
and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden
of regret for his denials, Paul had his own issues with which
he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles,
Paul strove with and surrendered to the same call. True,
they spent very little time together in this life, but the same
Spirit filled their hearts and by their witness changed the
face of the earth.

Sr Clarissa from the Philippines
Many of you may remember Sr. Clarissa. She partnered with
Fr. Peter when he went on mission to the Philippines. She visited this
parish during the terrible Typhoon Haiyan last November. For those of
you who do not know her, she is a member of the Oikos Sisters, a
small religious community of nuns who have dedicated their lives to
serving the poor.
Their mission homes are rescue homes for children who have
been orphaned, abandoned or rescued from extreme poverty. In addi-
tion to providing a roof over their heads, they also promote health and
education while giving them a home full of happiness, security and
joy.
The work of these Sisters also reaches out to very poor barrios
(villages). They have a feeding program for undernourished children,
a garden project enabling families to grow their own food and a piglet
program to name just a
few. They are also quite busy in relief efforts as they aid victims of Ty-
phoon Haiyan.
The Sisters not only serve the poor but live as one with the
poor. They live together as family with the children, sleeping together on straw mats on the floor, washing
their clothes in buckets and cooking their food on open fires.
What is amazing is that these four Sisters are able to serve so many and they do it all on donations. Their
lives are not easy ones but they are committed to do Gods work and care for whoever is brought to their
door.
She is eager to return to you and personally thank you and again ask for your help. Come hear Sr.
Clarissa tell the Oikos Sisters story at all July 12-13 Masses. Surely she will touch your hearts

Reflecting on Gods Word
PETER AND PAUL

Today is something of a rarity: the celebration of a
saint's day that replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a
handful of these days, given the official rank of
"solemnity," are considered so foundational and pri-
mal to the mission of the Church that they can inter-
rupt the Sunday sequence. And so it is with Peter and
Paul today.
In a way, they each have personality traits with which
we can identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes
acting or speaking thoughtlessly, contradicting the
spiritual gifts given to them by God. At such times,
they might receive a nudge from God, much the same
as many of us experience. On the positive side, these
men were deeply rooted in their faith in Christ, tire-
less and fearless in living out their call to spread the
Good News of his death and resurrection. Perhaps we
might identify more with one or the other, but the es-
sential truth we celebrate today is this: Through the
Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church
and make the kingdom known through fragile, re-
markable human beings, each graced in a particular
way for the work of the reign of God.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays Gospel we hear Peter proclaim who his friend
and teacher really is when he says to Jesus: You are the
Christ, the Son of the living God. Peter experienced
many ups and downs as a follower of Jesus. He could be
impetuous, impatient, fearful and even unfaithful. After
Peter had boasted of his fidelity to the Lord, he adamantly
denied him three times. It seemed that Peter had burned
his bridges, but Jesus lovingly rebuilt them and restored
Peter to service. Peter would become the chief steward of
the Gospel in the early church. Peter had failed Jesus, but
with Jesus, failure is not the end. Reflect this week on the
times you have failed Jesus. Were you open to Jesus for-
giveness? Did it make you a better steward of the Gospel?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in
Christ:

Our participation in the Peters
Pence Collection gives us an
opportunity to be a witness of
charity to our brothers and sis-
ters around the world. Gifts to this annual collec-
tion help the Holy Father support victims of war,
natural disasters, and others most in need of assis-
tance.

On Easter Sunday 2013, Pope Francis encouraged
each person to be a witness of charity. He said,
Let us be renewed by Gods mercy and let us
become agents of this mercy, channels through
which God can water the earth, protect all creation,
and make justice and peace flourish. Pope Francis
has continued to remind us through his actions that
we must serve our brothers and sisters in order to
be true disciples of Christ.

Join the Holy Father and be a witness of charity
throughout the world. You can participate through
your donations, prayers, and outreach to spread the
message of need. Please be generous in the Peters
Pence Collection next weekend, June 28/29.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
