Unemployment on the Young

The global recession: Layoffs are high in
just about every industry around the world. As
people spend less, companies have lower and
lower profits. It affects everyone. But people in
their twenties feel the recession more than
other age groups.
Young people are generally the last hired
in a company, so they are also the first to lose
their jobs. In a stronger economy, they can
easily find new work. But now older, more experienced people have
lost their jobs too. Both young and old are applying for the same
positions. Young people must compete against older, more
experienced workers in the marketplace.

Lesson 9 - Level A2
Lesson 9 - Level A2 5

Many young people struggle to find work after a layoff. Many
take part-time or temporary employment just to pay the bills. Luckily,
people in their twenties usually have less debt and fewer financial
obligations each month. They don't have massive car, home, or school
loans. They can be more flexible when unemployment does happen.

Discussion Questions:

1) Are you worried about the global recession? Why/not?
2) Are you worried about losing your job? Why/not?
3) If you lost your job, what would you do? Please explain.
4) When will the economy get better? Why do you think so?
