Course: ME 2252 - Manufacturing Technology II | Class: BEMEC-2012-4-A

Course
Objective(s)
#To understand the concept and basic mechanics of metal cutting, working of
standard machine tools such as lathe, shaping and allied machines, milling, drilling
and allied machines, grinding and allied machines and broaching

#To understand the basic concepts of computer numerical control (CNC) machine
tool and CNC programming.
Course
Outcome(s)
1.Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of manufacturing concepts to
ascertain the types of products that are cost effectively produced with the machine
tools like lathe, shaper, milling and drilling machines

5.Modern tool usage: Create and apply the part programming techniques in
Computer Numerical Control(CNC) for manufacturing new products

9.Individual and team work: Demonstrate the working of lathe, shaper , milling
and drilling machines individually and apply the machining concepts in project
works

Material Removal Processes:
# Material removal Processes commonly called
as conventional machining processes produces
a desired shape, size & finish on a rough block
of work piece with the help of a cutting tool
that is constrained to move relative to the work
piece in such a way that a layer of metal is
removed in the form of a chip.

#In machining process, working motion is
imparted to the work piece and cutting tool by
the machine tool so that the work piece and
cutting tool travel relative to each other.

#The basic elements of all machining
operations are work piece, cutting tool and
chip.

#The common machine tools involved in
machining operations are lathe, shaper, planer,
slotter, drilling, milling and grinding
machines.

#The machining jobs are mainly of two types
namely cylindrical and flats or prismatic.

#Cylindrical jobs are generally machined using
lathe, milling and cylindrical grinding whereas
prismatic jobs are machined using shaper,
planner, drilling and surface grinding.

#Machining is important commercially and
technologically for several reasons:
-Variety of part shapes and geometric features.
-Dimensional accuracy.
-Good surface finishes.

#The disadvantages associated with machining
processes:
-Time consuming
-Material wastage
