H
aving lived in their home some 44 years at 1777 Beacon Road,
Charles and Judy Haire have enjoyed their yard, but were pleasantly
surprised to learn that others enjoyed it too. Beth Craig, Leaf and
Petal Garden Club member, selected their yard as the June Yard of the
Month.
I chose this yard because every corner of it is very well maintained, Craig
said. Charles gives Judy the credit though she says they work together.
STORY AND PHOTOS BY SHRRY ARCHI/FOR THE LANCASTER NEWS
A daylily blooms in bright orange in the yard of Charles and Judy Haire at 1777 Beacon Road. The Haires were selected as the
June Yard of the Month by Beth Craig of the Leaf and Petal Garden Club.
T
he Haires built their home in 1970. Many of the origi-
nal boxwoods and hollies kept neatly trimmed con-
tinue to thrive in the yard a direct result of Judys
green thumb.
Growing plants has always been easy for me, Judy said.
Many times I have just stuck a small cutting from a plant in
the ground and it really takes off.
She says part of her secret is using Black Kow manure when-
ever she plants something new. Sprinkling a little Black Kow
into a pre-dug hole then blending it with the soil helps to cre-
ate a nurturing home for the new plant. Then she mixes a little
Black Kow into the soil surrounding the plant and packs it
gently to hold the plant firmly in place. She uses this same
trick for vegetable gardening as well.
More evidence of her green thumb can be found throughout
their yard. Hardy perennials, annuals, bushes and established
trees surround the house foundation and fill the many sculpt-
ed islands in the large yard. Whimsical yard ornaments, bird-
houses and bird feeders gathered through the years are nestled
here and theyre adding their own charm to the setting.
The Haires do share the yard work, which includes taking
about four hours a week to mow the massive 4.5 acre lot. Judy
says she enjoys mowing on their zero turn lawn mower so
Charles can tend to the weedeating. Shes a little hesitant for

I
n another realm, I was a
ball of fire, always full of
energy.
Why, I took on all kinds of
projects and tasks of all sorts
and sizes around our Char-
lotte Road Camelot.
Now, I get up in the morn-
ing with the best intentions of
getting our yard in better
shape.
No, I dont mean that blue
ribbon, Yard-of-the-Month
frenzy.
While I enjoy lookin at the
pictures, once you win that
distinction, you are under
pressure and the lawn is un-
der neighborhood micro-
scope.
Think about it you cant
have a single stray leaf in
sight on that manicured resi-
dential putting green.
Painted tractor tires for
flower beds aint allowed and
that flock of pink flamingos
has gotta take flight.
You have to think twice,
too.
Forget about buyin that
tray of assorted flowers that
catches your eye cause the
colors may clash with the
window trim.
Those old elephant ears
look like the Bailey Brothers
Circus is back in town.
You know, its hard to nego-
tiate the proper habitat that
achieves a balance between
two old long-tailed Tom cats
and a flock of nesting birds.
Rather than try to, I think
Ill just take a break, lay down
my back-breaking string trim-
mer and push the push mow-
er back under the junk shed.
