JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD
M.Tech I SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS, APRIL/MAY-2013
ADVANCED MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN
(MACHINE DESIGN)
Time: 3hours Max.Marks:60
Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks

1.a) What are the essential factors for Product design? Explain in detail.
b) What is creativity in engineering design? What are the techniques to improve
creativity in design? Explain.

2.a) Discuss the various design factors for closed die forgings with respect to the
location of the parting line of dies.
b) Describe some of the methods used for choosing a concept.

3.a) Maximum shear stress theory is more reliable as compared to the maximum
principal stress theory under the state of bi-axial stresses of opposite nature
Explain this.
b) The principal stresses at a point consist of a tensile stress of
1
=200 MPa, a
compressive stress of
2
=100 MPa, and
3
=0. Determine the maximum shear
stress and factor of safety, if the material has S
y
=500 MPa.

4.a) Discuss the different fatigue failure models employed in the product design of
machined components.
b) What is creep? Define and explain this phenomenon, and describe the types of
stress variation with a suitable diagram.

5.a) What are dynamic contact stresses and how do they affect the surface fatigue.
Explain.
b) Distinguish between abrasive wear and corrosion wear. Give two examples for
each type as to when and where they would occur.

6.a) Explain the terms Momentum, Muscle contraction and energy release, and
Isometric application of forces and isotonic action, with reference to human
factors engineering.
b) Describe the Function-cost-worth analysis phase and the Evaluation phase in a
Value Engineering job plan.

7.a) Discuss the role of human being as applicator of forces. Explain the aspects of
weight Distribution in lifting and carrying of weights. Illustrate your answer with
suitable sketches.
b) What do you understand by design for safety and reliability? Explain with
examples.

8.a) Explain the various factors to be considered in the design of controls.
b) Explain the role of value engineering in material and process selection.
