ADVANCED REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN
(STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING)
Time: 3hours Max.Marks:60

Note: Use of only IS 456:2000 is allowed.

1.a) List the advantages and disadvantages of Moment Redistribution.
b) A fixed beam of span 7 m is subjected to an udl of 24 kN/m. It is required to
reduce the fixed end bending moment at the left support by 25% and at the right
support by 20%. Analyse the beam for redistribution of moments and sketch the
resultant bending moment diagram.

2. Using yield line theory, design the floor slab of a class room of a multi-storeyed
structure for the following details. Dimensions of the class room =4m 6m.
Width of supporting beam =300 mm. The slab is continuous on all edges. Use
M 25 concrete and Fe 500 grade steel. Assume mild exposure condition. Sketch
the reinforcement details.

3. Design a ribbed slab 6 6 m continuous over two adjacent sides and simply
supported on the other two sides if it is beams so that beams are spaced at 1.5
1.5 m. Assume factored udl of 12 kN/m
2
. Use M 30 concrete and Fe 415 grade
steel. Assume moderate exposure condition.

4. Design an interior panel of 7.5 m 7.5 m wide flat slab, simply supported at the
periphery, by a masonry wall of 230 mm thick. Assume a live load of 4 kN/m
2

and finish load of 1.5 kN/m
2
. Adopt direct design method. Use M 30 concrete and
Fe 500 grade steel. Sketch the reinforcement details. Assume mild exposure
condition.

5.a) What do you mean by the term shear span? What is its effect on strength of RC
members.
b) Design a corbel to carry a factored load of 670 kN at a distance of 250 mm from
the face of a 350 350 mm column. Use M35 concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.

6.a) Explain whether the following statement, Plane sections remain plane before and
after bending is applicable to deep beams, or not.
b) A single span deep beam has an overall depth of 4.4 m and an effective span
6.5 m. The width of the beam is 400 mm. The supports an udl of 345 kN/m over
the entire span. Use M 25 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. Assume
moderate exposure condition.
Sketch the reinforcement details.

7. Design a shear wall of length 5 m and thickness 260 mm subjected to the
following forces (Figure). Assume moderate exposure condition. Assume
f
ck
=30 MPa and f
y
=415 N/mm
2
and the wall is a high wall with the following
loadings: Sketch the reinforcement details. Assume moderate exposure condition.

Loading Axial Force (kN) Moment (kNm) Shear (kN)
Dead Load +Live Load 2350 650 30
Seismic Load 400 5400 750

8.a) Distinguish between short-term and long-term deflections in RC members.
b) A simply supported one-way slab 180 mm thick having an effective span of 4.6 m
is reinforced with 10 mm diameter bars spaced at 125 mm c/c at an effective
cover of 25 mm. The slab is subjected to a live load of 4 kN/m
2
and a surface
finish of 1.5 kN/m
2
. Use M 25 concrete and Fe 500 grade steel. Assume ultimate
shrinkage strain =0.0003 and creep coefficient =1.6. Estimate the short-term
deflection and deflection due to only shrinkage of concrete.
