ABSTRACT
A case study was conducted in three selected barangay multipurpose halls in
Indang, Cavite to determine the space and design criteria for an effective barangay
multi-purpose hall. Specifically, the study aimed to: describe the current office layout of
barangay multipurpose halls in selected barangays in Indang, Cavite, determine the
spatial and design requirements for each of the various official functions in the barangay
multipurpose hall, and determine space and design criteria which are essential for an
effective layout of barangay multipurpose hall.
urposive sampling was employed in selecting the barangays included in this
study. !he barangay multipurpose halls covered in this study were "arangay oblacion
I, "arangay oblacion III, and "arangay oblacion I# in Indang, Cavite. !hese
barangays were selected on the basis of large community population being served by
the barangay officials. $ive %ey officials from each barangay served as respondents of
the study, namely: "arangay Chairman, Secretary, !reasurer, S& Chairman and one
"arangay Council 'ember.
(escriptive statistical tools were used to answer the ob)ectives of this research.
*bservation chec%list and photo documentation were utili+ed to gather data on the
whole office profile and physical appearance. ,i%ewise, interview schedule was used to
gather information on the wor%ing layout of each barangay official and their needs in
terms wor% environment and physical environment.
$indings showed that the multipurpose hall of "arangay oblacion I needed
ma)or improvement in terms of space and design. Its general office area was not
adequate to cover the standard wor%station space, circulation space, and support space
needed to achieve an effective office layout. Consequently, barangay officials felt that

their environment is not conducive for wor%ing. Also, upgrading of design in the said
barangay was necessary in terms of lighting, temperature, acoustic, and color since
these are the areas that did not measure up to the standard. $urther, the limited office
space in the multipurpose hall of "arangay oblacion I resulted to limited furniture and
equipment that should have been used by barangay officials in the delivery of public
services.
In spite of the large office area available in the multipurpose halls of "arangay
oblacion II and I#, the standard wor%station space and the required support space
such as storage space, restroom, and conference room were still not in accordance with
the standard. !his indicated that the standard space and design layout were not
considered during office planning of multipurpose halls.
*verall, an effective space and design layout of a barangay multipurpose hall
depended on but not limited to the following: available office area, e-isting furniture and
equipment, wor%space, the level of importance given by barangay officials to visual and
acoustic privacy, frequency of contact with visitors, the privacy of )ob or equipment used,
the frequency phone. audio equipment use, the need for concentration input, important
wor%space in barangay multipurpose hall, the barangay officials/ immediate wor%ing
groups, level of noise and lighting in the wor% area, color preference, improvements, and
equipment and furniture needed by barangay officials.
