EXT. POOLSIDE / MANSION - NIGHT 1 1

TIMELINE: London, 1985. *
A boy, (Black, sevenish) is peering through a half-open
door wide eyes and afraid. In a swimming pool, LEON (Male *
30's, BlackBrit, fit) is struggling to resuscitate a woman. *
Frantic, the man tries again then slowly stops the man. The
boy moves away from the door as the man turns, wet,
exhausted and looks at him.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. REGISTRY OFFICE. DAY 2 2
CHARLES (male, 30's BritCarib, good looks) and GINIKA *
(Female, African, late 20's, Elegant) stand side by side *
facing the REGISTRAR, (Female, English, Stern looking) as
she spells out her words lucidly. A relaxed smile plays on
Charles' face. She is smiling, absentmindedly twiddling her
fingers.
REGISTRAR
If any one can show just cause,
why these two may not lawfully be
joined together, let them now
speak, or else hereafter for ever
hold their peace.
As she speaks, CHIWETEL, (African male 30's, tall, dark,
good looks) is smiling and tapping a silent beat with his
hands on his thighs.
REGISTRAR (CONT'D)
By the power invested in me...
Chiwetel smiles. *

her hand.
CHIWETEL

CHARLES
My pleasure. (his phone rings)
Excuse me.

He moves away as Chiwetel puts his arm around Ginika whose
expression has changed drastically. She rips off her
wedding ring, stepping back.
GINIKA
That ceremony in there was the
hardest thing I've ever done.
CHIWETEL
It's nothing. Everybody does it.
(beat) It's the only way.
GINIKA
Nothing? Stand in front of the
law and promise to be a man's
wife without even knowing his
middle name?
CHIWETEL
Charles has a British passport.
When you get your documents, you
divorce him and we get married,
for real.
GINIKA
Was this your plan when we left
Nigeria...
Chiwetel tries to interrupt her.
CHIWETEL
Ginikanwa, you're the love of
my life..... This is for...
GINIKA,
...For me to enter an
arranged marriage?
CHIWETEL
No. Of course not. No. Beat -
changing tone) I lost my job.
GINIKA
What?
CHIWETEL
There was an immigration raid at
the council office. I hid. If I
go back, they'll ask for my
passport.
GINIKA
When were you planning to tell
me?
CHIWETEL
That doesn't matter for now. We
need Charles.

They turn to see Charles grinning at them? There's an
uncomfortable silence. Ginika tries to calm down.
GINIKA
I'm just worried about the
implications of what we just did.
Charles is calm.
CHARLES
It's fine. I'm happy to do it.
You're like family. (Beat),
Chuwee, you can take my car, I'll *
catch up with you later and pick *
it up.
CHIWETEL
No worries man, Thanks again.
Charles shakes Chiwetel's hand and as he turns to open the *
door, Charles plants a kiss on Ginika's cheek and leaves, a *
sneaky grin on his face. She is shocked and turns to *
Chiwetel who didn't notice. *

INT. OLD-FASHIONED PUBLIC HOUSE. - EVENING 5 5
The pub LANDLORD is totting up figures on the cash
register. NKECHI (Female late 20's, African, tall slim) is
cleaning the bar and putting away drinking glasses. LEON
(now in his late 50s) is nursing a drink and staring
straight at her. He looks in very good shape physically.
He's wearing an expensive looking blazer and a neckerchief.
The light catches his heavy gold watch as he lifts his
drink. Nkechi senses the ogling, turns round, sees him,
smiles and continues her job. LEON walks towards her. *
Suddenly the men in bomber jackets run into the building.
Two of them jump over the bar, making for the inner rooms.
Another makes for the toilets past Leon and a visibly
panicked Nkechi. LEON notices and quickly grabs her in an
embrace. The Landlord watches them in surprise. One of the *
men walks up to them and flashes a badge.

employ illegal immigrants.
LANDLORD
And you have found any of them on
my premises?
IMMIGRATION MAN
We've got our sources.
He looks around, his gaze landing on Nkechi, who is tightly
holding LEON. Leon whispers to her and she laughs nervously
as he kisses her.
LANDLORD
If you're about finished...
IMMIGRATION MAN
Good evening gentlemen, and lady.
He walks off with his colleagues and takes out a phone as
he reaches the door.
IMMIGRATION MAN (CONT'D)
Negative...
Nkechi hangs on to Leon still petrified. She starts crying. *
LEON
Are you okay?
NKECHI
I think so sir. (turning to
Landlord) Can I get my things?
Landlord nods. *

GINIKA

CHIWETEL
What's there to think about?
Ginika steps out and holds out her left hand, pointing to
her ring finger.
CHIWETEL (CONT'D)
Oh, that.
Chiwetel is a bit discomfited. Ginika notices this and
leans closer to him.
GINIKA ,
I called home.
CHIWETEL
How are your parents?
GINIKA
They're fine. (beat) You know,
the inevitable came up...
Ginika stretches out her fingers, looking at them. Chiwetel
reaches out and strokes them.
CHIWETEL
And you told them the matter is
in hand.
GINIKA
Of course. (Cheekily) Why don't
you stick an engagement...? *
(tapping her ring finger) I'll
take a picture and send it to my
parents.
Ginika gets up and heads off towards the flats, hips *
swaying seductively. Chiwetel chases after her.

CHIWETEL
I can't tell you that. Let's just

GINIKA
Like one point zero zero zero
zero zero?
CHIWETEL
Ah ah! Of course not.
GINIKA
I'll wear the ring Charles gave
me.
CHIWETEL
You mean the ring that I paid
for?
GINIKA
Yes. The ring you paid for.
CHIWETEL
I wouldn't want you wearing it

impression.
Before Ginika can respond Charles walks up behind them.
CHARLES

They turn to see Charles walk up to them.

CHARLES *

Chiwetel reaches into his pocket and pulls out a wad of *

CHIWETEL *
Three years is a long time. I *
want this to be a business *
arrangement. *
CHARLES *
But, we're friends. *
CHIWETEL *
And I want us to remain friends. *
That's why this has to be a *
strict business arrangement. *
CHARLES *
Okay but, you'll do the same for *
me. *
CHIWETEL *
And why would I want to marry a *
bloke? *
Charles is perplexed and then, gets the joke. They both *
start laughing and return to where Ginika is standing. *
GINIKA

live? *
CHARLES

UJU

Ginika looks up, sensing that someone is watching her. She *

still buzzed from the alchohol.
NKECHI
I'm so sorry Chiwetel. It's all

had anything planned. Please
forgive me. I just, we just

Chiwetel nods, smiling. But he's not really taking in

Ginika who's still wearing Nkechi's dress and jewelry.

They could have been made for

GINIKA
That's what she said.
CHIWETEL
You look good enough to eat.
GINIKA
Wanna taste?
Chiwetel doesn't need a second invite. As they kiss, a
PASSERBY observes them briefly, and as he walks away...
PASSERBY
Why don't you two get a room?
Ginika and Chiwetel disengage, laughing.
CHIWETEL
That doesn't sound like a bad
idea.
She looks at him seductively and beckons him over. He
sweeps her of her feet and carries her into the restaurant.
The waiter, sees them and opens the doors. Smiling. He nods
them in.
Music plays as Chiwetel wines and dines Ginika, feeding

I'm happy with my accommodation!
Father.
LEON
Okay. Okay.
CHARLES
What are you doing here?
LEON
Why are you chasing me away from
your life? You're all I have,
and, I'm all you've got.
CHARLES
Congratulations on your new wife.
Leon smiles uneasily.
CHARLES (CONT'D)
I hear you moved her into mom's

LEON

CHARLES
You want to get rid of your
guilt.
LEON
Stop this Charles!
CHARLES
That you killed my mother.
Leon is enraged, but tries to control himself.
LEON
And you saw me kill my wife?
I lost the love of my life. I
couldn't blame you; you were a
kid. I had no one to talk.
Alcohol made me forget.

CHIWETEL

LEON stands up slowly. All the while trying to avoid
Ginika's stare, he walks out of the apartment. Charles
shuts the door.
Charles is drained and almost in a daze. He walks to a
stack of books and photo albums. He pulls out an album and
hands it over to her. Ginika opens the album and she's
staring at herself. She drops the album as if it were hot
coals. She turns angrily at Charles.
CHARLES
That's not you. That's my mother.
Maryanne Springer.
GINIKA
Your mother?
He walks over and picks up the album.
CHARLES
She died, years ago. My father *

He approaches a petrified Nkechi menacingly.

INT. PASTOR'S HOUSE - EVENING 49 49 *
Pastor Samson (Thick set, African Male 40s - 50's, beady

prosperity and looks the part. His stomach suggests he
indulges in food for the soul and food for the body., he
occasionally wipes some imaginary sweat off his brow with a
white handkerchief, an action that also highlights the
enormous gold watch on his right wrist.
UJU
... He has been in London for a

together for a few months.

UJU
Yes sir.
PASTOR
Why?
UJU
I'm a Christian.
PASTOR
Yes, but, why do you read the
Bible?
Uju thinks.
UJU
I see it as a guide to living a
good life.
PASTOR
Aha! Okay, have you ever used a
dictionary?
UJU
Yes sir.
PASTOR
Why?
UJU
To help me understand certain
words better.

put it in a bowl of water and

Going off to change.
CHIWETEL

Ginika turns.

GINIKA

CHIWETEL
What are you saying?
GINIKA
If I slept with Charles, should

CHIWETEL
Yes. Because I made it clear to

What's gotten into you, man?
Rising.
CHIWETEL

CHARLES
Why don't you go back home and

CHARLES (CONT'D)
CHIWETEL
We had a business arrangement. That's why I insisted on

CHARLES (CONT'D)
And you think if your girlfriend

falls for another man, 3000
pounds will give you security?
Chiwetel stares at him, makes as if to walk away but spins
round and lands a haymaker on charles' chin. As charles
falls, Chiwetel is on him, raining blows. Charles manages
to grab a big book and slams Chiwetel's head with it. That
stops him. Charles grabs a bottle. Chiwetel grabs a chair.
They circle each other. Suddenly, Chiwetel notices that
Charles is bleeding. He stops, drops the chair. He turns
and runs out of the room, leaving his jacket behind.
