My Experience as a Legislative Research Intern

My experience as a Legislative Research Intern for the Utah State Legislature was beyond
exceptional. As an intern, I would track legislation, attend and arrange meetings, prep constituent
and media correspondences, and research public policy issues. Beyond learning of the legislative
process, the internship taught me much of independence, ethics and integrity. Though, much of
what I learned can be credited to the leadership exhibited by the legislators of the 60th Utah State
Legislature.

I experienced a few challenges prior to the commencement of the internship. Foremost was my
employment. I had to request a leave of absence that would span 2.5 months. There was also the
immense distance that I would have to travel. My funds were limited and I was unable to arrange
for a place to stay/rent. As the primary financial contributor in my household (me, my mother,
and younger sister), the decision was also not for me to make alone.

While I had the utmost support from my employers to conduct the internship, it was necessary
for them to ensure the maintenance of my duties. They, therefore, hired a temporary replacement
until I would return. Though I would be compensated as an intern, it was not enough to ensure
both my stay in a new city and support to my family. Regardless, I was able to make the travel
and arrange for a temporary place to stay.

I questioned my aptitude. As a non-Political Science major I felt out of my element. It was
difficult not to compare myself to the other interns, who were all so poised and confident in their
abilities. As I recall those concerns, I now consider them frivolous. It is with support and
assistance from those interns that I was able to accomplish some of my assignments.

As the General Session progressed, I gained an overwhelming knowledge regarding the
legislative process, from the origin of a bill to its passage. Beyond the process, I developed an
appreciation for our legislators. They are diligent in understanding the context of every piece of
legislation. I was surprised to also witness the immense interaction between the legislators and
their constituents. This dedication inspired me. It allowed me to contend with the challenges I
initially faced.

Perhaps my most enjoyable experience would be my involvement with one piece of legislation.
My involvement ranged from setting and attending meetings, communicating the bills intent, and
ushering the beneficiaries of the legislation to the Senate Chamber during its presentation. My
immersion also allowed for my recognition in the Utah State Senate. My independence and
determination were highlighted.

Because the Utah State Legislature is a part-time citizen legislature, our legislators vary in their
background and profession. Their service to the state reinforces the notion that anything is
possible with much effort and determination. As a result, my decision to continue my education
has been affirmed. Furthermore, a newfound interest in government and politics has taken root. I
will always regard this moment in my life as my triumphant period.
