Course Syllabus: UBD Learning Module on Gamification

I. Course Description: Participants will learn what gamification is and how to implement gamification in the classroom. Readings and activities are designed to help educators understand and become familiar with gamification. Participants will collaborate with peers to gamify EDET 635 by using game mechanics and principles.
II. Prerequisite: EDET 635
III. Textbook and/or required Readings:
Sheldon, Lee. (2011). The Multiplayer Classroom: Designing Coursework as a Game. Course Technology/Cengage Learning: Boston, MA. (Available in the UAS ebrary-linked in resources).

V. Course Objectives Standards Assessment Additional Assessment Explain gamification and compare/contrast gamification to game- based learning. NETS-C 3b. Maintain and manage a variety of digital tools and resources. NETS-C 3g. Use digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with peers. 1. NETS-C 6a Engage in continual learning to deepen content and pedagogical knowledge in technology integration and current and emerging Participants will write a 350-500 word blog entry reflecting assigned readings and video, including 2-3 additional sources. On day two participants will read and comment on a minimum of 2 other blogs. technologies necessary to effectively implement the Standards-S and Standards-T. Determine if gamification should be tied to grading. NETS-C 3g. Use digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with peers. Each participant will submit two questions for our twitter session/google hangout. Participants will attend our session and play an active role by instant message, tweets, or by discussing gamification verbally.
Gamify EDET 635 by developing a theme, a leader board, and a minimum of 1 badge per participant. NETS-T 2b Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress. Each participant will suggest 2-3 themes for EDET 635. Participants will choose one theme to use for EDET 635. Participants will suggest 2-3 leader board formats; the group will pick one format and post this to each blog or twitter. (Each person must post for xp points).
Explain how students will earn XP points and outline how many XP points will be needed to level up. NETS-C 3g. Participants will prepare a leader board for two weeks of EDET 635 outlining how many xp points will be awarded per Additionally, participants will outline how many xp points are needed to level up. Submit via blog post or twitter. their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress. assignment or if xp points will be awarded only via side quests. (Given time frame xp points tied to assignments is recommended)
