Fire Safety and Fire Prevention

the responsibility of EVERYONE!

The primary goal at Nazareth College and our fire prevention plan is to reduce or
eliminate fire on our beautiful campus by heightening the fire safety awareness
of all our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Our goal is to provide everyone
with the information necessary to recognize hazardous conditions and take
appropriate action before these conditions result in a fire emergency.

All rooms and buildings are monitored by a combination of heat and smoke
detectors. These detectors automatically activate building alarms. However, if
you see smoke before the building alarm has sounded, pull the fire alarm in the
hallway on your way out so that all other building occupants are notified that
they should evacuate. Once safely outside, immediately report to a Campus
Safety Officer and state what you observed and why you pulled the alarm.

Fire Sprinkler Smoke/ Heat detector

Some of our buildings are protected by a Fire Sprinkler System. These sprinklers
are all activated by heat. Only the sprinkler(s) activated by the heat source will
flow water. The whole building will not activate like it does in Hollywood movies.
You should remember to keep all items at least 18 inches away from all
sprinklers. This will enable the sprinkler heads to be unobstructed if they need
to put out a fire. Nothing should be hung from these sprinklers EVER!

Nazareth College has a Fire Safety Officer (FSO).
Areas of responsibility for the FSO include: conducting fire safety inspections,
fire safety training, testing and maintaining all fire safety equipment on campus,
fire extinguisher training, managing fire extinguisher maintenance program and
managing compliance with local and state fire safety regulations and codes as
well as any applicable OSHA programs. In addition, the FSO is responsible for
investigating all fire alarms on campus.
If you have any questions regarding Fire Safety, PLEASE contact
Nazareth College Fire Safety Officer Dan Kwiecien
at ext. 2856 or by email dkwieci5@naz.edu.

Every alarm should be treated as an actual emergency. In the event of any
fire alarm, follow these easy steps:
1. Alert your roommates or suitemates.
2. Without opening your door, feel the surface or handle.
3. If the door is hot, DO NOT OPEN IT.
4. Otherwise, open the door slowly and if there is little or no smoke,
proceed to the nearest emergency exit. Be sure to use the stairs
instead of the elevator.
5. If you can make it to an exit, remember to stay low below the smoke.

In certain circumstances, it is impossible to leave your room. Whether
this is due to a fire or your own personal physical limitations,
immediately contact Campus Safety and tell them your location.

If you are unable to evacuate because of fire or smoke, follow these steps:
1. Keep your door closed but unlocked.
2. Place wet towels under your door to prevent smoke inhalation.
3. Call Campus Safety (x-2850 or 389-2850) tell them where you are
and your situation
4. Keep in mind that if you live on the first floor, a window may be used
as an exit.
5. Go to the window and signal to the fire department by hanging a
towel or sheet out the window.
6. Stay put Campus Safety or the Fire Department will come to you!

Watch your cooking: Unattended cooking
in the residence halls leads to accidental
alarms and, in extreme cases, fires.
Be mindful of the food you cook; dont leave
the kitchen when youre cooking,
even if its just microwavable popcorn.
Remember that cooking appliances may
not be permitted in your residence hall. Check page 39 of your Student
Handbook to find out what is NOT permitted in your residence hall.

Hair-care products: Hair products and hair
appliances (hairdryers, curling irons, hair
straighteners), can create steam or slight heat that
may activate a smoke detector. 44% of our fire
alarms on campus in the fall semester were due to
hair-care products. When using hair-care
products, if possible, open a window or door. If
more than one person is using a hair-care item,
space yourselves out to minimize the heat created.
These should all be used in a well-vented area that
is not directly near a smoke detector.

Aerosol and Misting Sprays. When using
a spray product (such as body spray, Oust
or hairspray), watch out for the position of
the smoke alarms on your ceiling. Spraying
directly under the detectors may activate
them. If possible, open a window. Steam from a hot shower may also
activate a smoke detector. If you plan to take a steamy shower, you
should do so with the bathroom door closed. If you plan to use spray
paint, please do so outside where it is well-vented!

Extension cords/ Power Cubes: Students are not permitted to
have extension cords or power cubes (multi-plug adaptors). Power
strips (or surge protectors) are allowed.

NO NO YES!

Candles and incense: There are NO open flames allowed on
campus. This means candles and incense are prohibited. Reed oil
diffusers, however, are allowed.

Bulbs that are above max wattage: Each lamp has a sticker,
saying the maximum wattage it can withstand without creating a
fire hazard. When buying bulbs, look at the box for their max
wattage, and make sure it is equal or less than your lamp.

Daisy-Chains: If you have one
power strip plugged into another,
fix it immediately. This is called
daisy-chaining,
and is not permitted.

Multi-headed Lamps:
Multi headed lights (more than 3 heads)
are prohibited in residence halls.
