SuperMax V1.0 Instruction Manual
Congratulations on your purchase of the SuperMax! You now have in your possession one of the
most powerful, compact, and technologically advanced PVs on the market today. The SuperMax
is also built to be durable, used in any environment and to last for years.
How to Use your SuperMax
SuperMax is very easy to use. To vape with the SuperMax, there are only three components that
you need to know about - the atomizer connector, the LED display, and the main (activation)
button. These are shown in Figure 1. The LED will turn on when the Activation Button is pressed
and will display the current setting of the SuperMax.
In addition to the LED display, there is also an audio activator inside the unit that will emit
sounds to help with the operation of the unit.

Vaping on the SuperMax
Using the SuperMax is very simple. Just place any atomizer, cartomizer or other
compatible load into the atomizer connector (it has 510 compatible threads), press the
activation button and hold it down. When you press the activation button down, the
audio actuator will "chirp" once to let you know the button has been pushed. The Chirp
sounds like this:
Please note that every time the activation button is pushed, during the first push the
unit measures and calibrates the output to match the setting on the LED display. Thus, if
changes to the output settings are made (more about this later), it may take a fraction of
a second longer before the "Chirp" is heard. This small delay is the extra time the unit
needs to calibrate and verify that it is at the new output settings. Subsequent button
pushes will not have a delay unless further changes to the output settings are made.

Charging the SuperMax

To charge the SuperMax, plug the Mini-USB charging port (shown in Figure 2) into a
compatible computer USB port or charger using the appropriate cable. While charging,
the green charging indicator light will illuminate. When the SuperMax has completed its
charging cycle, the charging indicator light will turn off. To complete a charge cycle (on a
fully discharged battery) takes about 90 minutes.
Please note that the SuperMax is designed to charge quickly, and thus requires either
a USB port compatible with standard 2.0 or later, or a wall charger that can output at least
1000 mA. If you connect the SuperMax to an incompatible USB prot or charger, it will not
damage the SuperMax (although the charging cycle my not complete correctly), but it
may damage the USB port or charger.
If you try to plug into the SuperMax's USB charging port when the battery is fully
charged, the green indicator light will not turn on and the charge cycle will not start. If
you wait until the battery has discharged a little further you will be able to start the
charging cycle. This feature prevents unnecessary "Shallow Discharge" charges which can
reduce the life of the battery.
If you wish, the SuperMax can be used as a passthrough. Simply plug in the USB
charging port and use the SuperMax while the charging cycle is running (i.e. the green
light is on). The SuperMax will typically take a little longer to complete the charge cycle
when it is being used as a passthrough, however.

Entering a Command
The SuperMax uses the same button for entering commands as it does for normal vaping. To
enter a command (as opposed to using the button for normal vaping), one must enter a number
of "taps" followed by a button "hold". A button "tap" occurs when the button is held down long
enough hear the "chirp" sound and then released (this corresponds to a time period of from
between 0.5 to 1 seconds). After a number of "taps" have been entered, the command is
activated by pressing the button one last time and holding it down for more than 2 seconds. This
is the "hold" action, which is analogous to hitting the "enter" key on a computer.
When entering "taps" for a command, the SuperMax will hold the tap count in its buffer for
two seconds before clearing it. This means that if you enter an incorrect (or random) number of
"taps", or you get lost with the "tap" count, simply wait 2 seconds (without touching the button)

and your actions will be reset and you can start over again. This also means that you cannot wait
longer than 2 seconds between taps, since the buffer will be cleared in that amount of time.
One other interesting feature about entering commands is that the SuperMax will not fire
the atomizer after the first "tap" is entered. Thus while you enter a command, the atomizer will
not be firing at any time. Also, you should give the device enough time to complete the command
before trying to vape. As a general rule, wait at least two seconds when you enter a command
before vaping on the device normally.

Adjusting the Settings
The SuperMax has a total of 5 different commands which allow the user to set the unit to their
preferred operational setting. These commands are: Output Setting Up, Output Setting Down,
Lock/Unlock, Change Mode, and Audio Enable/Disable.
Increase Output
To increase the output setting of the SuperMax, tap the button once and then hold. This
will increase the output by one increment (once increment is 0.1 V in Variable Voltage
mode and a varying amount - depending on the setting - in Variable Wattage mode). If you
wish to increase the setting further, simply keep the button held and the unit will count up.
Release the button when you get to the desired setting.
When you increase the setting of the SuperMax, the unit will make this sound:
Increase.wav
The display will also show the value of the setting in Volts or Watts (depending on
whether the unit is in VV or VW mode).

Decrease Output
To decrease the output setting of the SuperMax, tap the button twice and then hold. This
will decrease the output by one increment. If you wish to decrease the setting further,
simply keep the button held and the unit will count down. Release the button when you
get to the desired setting.
When you decrease the setting of the SuperMax, the unit will make this sound:
Decrease.wav
The display will also show the value of the setting in Volts or Watts (depending on
whether the unit is in VV or VW mode).

Setting Lock/Unlock
Once the unit has been set to an output level you are comfortable with, it is often useful to
lock the settings. This prevents making accidental/inadvertent changes to the device. It
also turns most of the audio interface off, since this is used mainly to enter commands.
While the unit is locked, you can still read device settings (such as checking the battery
charge level), you just cannot change these settings (except for unlocking the device, of
course).
To lock the SuperMax, enter 5 "taps" followed by a "hold". The unit will then lock,
play this sound
L o c k On . w a v
and the display will show the letter "L". At this point the
Increase/Decrease Output commands, Change Mode Commands and the Mute Audio
commands are deactivated. You can still measure the battery level and resistance of the
atomizer, however.
To unlock the SuperMax, simply repeat the command (5 "taps" followed by a "hold"),
the unit will play this sound:
Lock Off.wav
and the letter "U" will be shown on the display. The
SuperMax is now unlocked and the settings can be changed as before.

Figure 3 - SuperMax Display showing the "L" (locked) and "U" (unlocked) displays.

Change Mode
The SuperMax can be used in either Variable Voltage (VV) mode or Variable Wattage (VW)
mode. In VV mode, the output is set to a constant voltage and in VW mode the output is
set to a constant power. To switch modes, enter 6 "taps" followed by a "hold". When
switching to Variable Wattage mode, the unit will play this sound: When switching to
Variable Voltage Mode, the unit will play this sound:

One way to tell if the unit is in VV or VW mode is to look for the presence of the
decimal point in the display. In VV mode, when you press the main button to vape, the
display will range between 3.0 and 5.5. In VW mode, the display will range between 5 and
70, with no decimal point.

Figure 4 - The display showing VV mode (4.2 volts) and VW mode (20 watts)

Mute Audio
Some users may wish to use the SuperMax without the audio interface. To turn the audio
off, enter 7 "taps" followed by a "hold". When you do this, the unit does not make any
more sounds. To turn the audio back on, enter the same command. The unit will play the
Liberty Bell March to let you know the audio is active again.

Making Measurements
Measurement commands allow the SuperMax to measure and display certain useful operational
parameters. For instance, in normal vaping mode, the display shows the voltage or power that
the unit is outputting. When a measurement command is entered, however, the display will
show a different value according to the measurement which has been made.
Battery Charge Level
To measure the charge level of the battery, enter 4 "taps" followed by a "hold". When this
command is entered, the display will show a number corresponding to the charge level of
the battery. It will also play a tone which indicates a "Good Charge Level", "Low Charge
Level" or a "Bad Charge Level".

Figure 5 shows the battery level display. A - symbol along with a number is
displayed, which corresponds to the voltage of the battery. For instance, -6 means a
battery level of 7.6 volts. -9 means a battery level of 7.9 volts. When the display shows
-H this means the battery voltage is fully charged and is above 8.0 volts.

Figure 5 Three displays showing a battery level of 7.6, 7.9 and above 8.0 volts.
One important thing to note about the battery level is that it is not linear. For
instance, about 80 of the battery capacity is gone once the display reads the -6 value.
The battery will discharge much more quickly from -6 to -0 than it did from -H to -
6. A general rule of thumb is that it is a good idea to recharge the unit when it hits the -
6 level or below, since there is not that much vaping time left in the battery anyway (you
can use the unit as a passthrough while it is charging if you like).
Atomizer Resistance
Entering 5 "Taps" followed by a "hold" instructs the SuperMax to measure the resistance
of the Atomizer and display it on the display. For resistances from 1.0 to 3.0, the display
will show a number with a decimal point as in Figure 6.
If the measured resistance is less than 1.0, then the display will first show the tenths
of an ohms digit (preceded by a 0 and decimal point), and will then scroll to show the
hundredths of an ohm digit. Figure 7 shows the display measuring 0.72, first displaying
0.7 then scrolling to 72.
If the resistance is too high for the SuperMax to measure (i.e. above 3.0) it will
display the double error bars - - along with an error beep.
Note that the accuracy of the resistance measurement is plus or minus the least
significant digit, which is 0.1 in the 1.0 to 3.0 range and 0.2 on the 0.3 to 0.98. The
SuperMax cannot measure resistances lower than 0.3

Other Things You Should Know
In VW mode, the SuperMax controls the power going into the load by measuring the output
voltage and current and using this to calculate the power. This is done several times a second
while the button is pushed. The unit then displays the power value on the display that is closest
to the power setting.
When there is no load (i.e. no atomizer attached) then the current being delivered to the
load will, by definition, be zero. Thus the power being delivered to the load will also be zero.
Thus when the button is pushed with no atomizer attached (and the unit is in VW mode), the
SuperMax flashes error bars on the display (shown in Figure 8) and beeps twice. The current
power setting will remain until a load is connected to the device.

Figure 8 When no atomizer is attached in VW mode, when the button is pressed the unit
will display the current wattage setting followed by error bars and a double beep.
During normal use, as the battery becomes discharged, the unit monitors the battery
voltage and, for safety reasons, will not allow the battery voltage to drop below 7.0 volts. When
this happens, the unit will play an error tone and shut off completely. At this point the unit it
must be recharged before it can be used again, and while recharging, will be shut off until the
battery voltage rises above 7.6 volts. It will then play the Ode to Joy and can be used as a
passthrough if desired. It is best to allow it to complete the charge cycle uninterrupted when it
has completely discharged, however, since that will minimize wear on the battery.
Audio Tones and What They Mean
The tones played by the SuperMax provide an additional cue as to what is going on with the unit.
This is helpful, in particular, when a condition arises which requires the users attention. Below
are the description of the tones and what they mean:
Ode to Joy This tone indicates that the battery has a good charge. It is played when a
battery measurement is performed and the battery is above -6. It also
plays when the unit comes back on after being shut off due to a discharged
battery.
Imperial March This tone plays when the battery has become fully discharged, and the unit
is about to shit itself off. When you hear this tone you will not be able to use
the SuperMax unit you recharge the battery. It is recommended, that when
this tone is played, you let the SuperMax complete its charge cycle and do
not use it as a passthough.

Charge! This tune plays when the unit is unlocked.
Football Game This is the tune played when you lock the unit. It is the tune that was played
on those old hand-held Coleco electronic football games (with the LED
display)
He-Man Plays when switching from VV to VW mode (I have the Power!!!)
Smoke on the Water Plays when switching from VW to WW Mode.
Liberty Bell March Plays when de-muting the audio (this is the same as the Monty Python
Theme song).
Double Beep This is the error tone. It plays when you set the output of the unit to one of
its limits.
