Purpose:
(rovide general g0idelines for %bservership at Montefiore Medical Center
Scope:
These g0idelines are applicable to all approved %bservers1
Guidelines
Oser!er
Upon reco//endation by the appropriate Chairperson2 and 3ith approval of the Medical
!irector2 physicians at the postgrad0ate2 postdoctoral2 fac0lty level2 and practicing or non
practicing physicians that are not appointed to the Medical Staff at Montefiore Medical Center
/ay observe clinical activities for ed0cational p0rposes at Montefiore Medical Center as
%bservers1
Beca0se %bservers are not /e/bers of the Medical Staff2 they /ay not participate in direct or
indirect patient care or /anage/ent1 As the na/e i/plies2 an %bservership is an infor/al
observational e4perience and does not constit0te training1 %bservers do not receive any for/ of
certification fro/ Montefiore Medical Center for the ti/e of their appoint/ent1

An applicant for an approved %bserver appoint/ent /0st be a physician trained in a specialty

represented at Montefiore Medical Center1 %bservers /0st be able to s0bsidi5e their stay in #e3
6or7 d0ring the period of the appoint/ent1
Len(#$ o+ S#"&
The length of appoint/ent for an %bserver /ay vary fro/ t3o 3ee7s to not /ore than one year
and depends on the s0pervising fac0lty /e/ber8s availability and 3illingness to oversee this
e4perience1 (hysicians visiting for a period of less than t3o 3ee7s 3ill be s0b9ect to the individ0al
depart/ent8s visitor policy1 $or international applicants2 the application process /ay ta7e fro/
three to five /onths1
Speci"l#&
%bservers /0st be trained in a /edical specialty that is represented at Montefiore Medical Center1
)hen /a7ing the initial contact 3ith Montefiore Medical Center2 the applicant sho0ld be very
specific abo0t his or her area of interest 3ithin the specialty to ens0re that the appropriate fac0lty
/e/ber is assigned to s0pervise the/ sho0ld they be approved as observers1 %bservers sho0ld
0nderstand that2 d0e to heavy fac0lty 3or7loads and high de/and for observership opport0nities2
so/e depart/ents /ight be 0nable to offer this appoint/ent to all :0alified applicants1

All observers /0st be fl0ent in English1
Fees
!epending on the clinical depart/ent2 there /ay be a fee associated 3ith %bservership visits1
Applic"#ion Procedure
All observers /0st be officially invited to co/e to Montefiore Medical Center by the Chairperson
of the clinical depart/ent to 3hich the observer is applying2 0pon the reco//endation of a
fac0lty /e/ber or s0pervising physician 3ithin that depart/ent1
Applications /0st incl0de:
-1 "etter ;i1e1 &e:0est for observership< indicating the specific area of interest 3ithin the
specialty and
goals of the applicant2 as 3ell as the d0ration of the observership
.1 A letter of acceptance fro/ the Chairperson of the clinical depart/ent or division to 3hich
the observer is applying for the observership
=1 C0rric0l0/ vitae indicating training2 research and p0blications
EC$MG infor/ation if applicable or available
>1 Copy of /edical school diplo/a or final transcripts
+1 Copy of valid visa or proof of i//igration stat0s
The above infor/ation sho0ld be sent to the !epart/ent Chairperson1 The clinical depart/ent
3ill deter/ine 3hether a fac0lty /e/ber is available to s0pervise the observer at the ti/e
indicated in the applicant8s letter1 f the applicant has prearranged the observership 3ith a fac0lty
/e/ber or s0pervising physician2 this infor/ation sho0ld be incl0ded in the re:0est for
observership1 The clinical depart/ent 3ill contact the applicant regarding the stat0s of his or her
application and 3hether a fac0lty preceptor has been identified1

observership application and re:0ired doc0/entation to Ho0se Staff %ffice for processing1
Ho0se Staff %ffice 3ill as7 the applicant to co/plete the %bservership Agree/ent and present the
G0idelines for %bservership at MMC2 Cover "etter,&e:0ire/ents for %bservership2 and the
%bservership !oc0/entation Chec7list to the %bserver1
