All: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give
you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take
away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand
of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the
Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

The Lessons (please be seated)
Reader: A reading from Zechariah Zechariah 9:9-12

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter J erusalem!
Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he,
humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
and the war horse from J erusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
and he shall command peace to the nations;
his dominion shall be from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
3

I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.

Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
today I declare that I will restore to you double.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God. S415

Exaltabo te, Deus Psalm 145:8-15

The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, *
slow to anger and of great kindness.

The LORD is loving to everyone *
and his compassion is over all his works.

All your works praise you, O LORD, *
and your faithful servants bless you.

They make known the glory of your kingdom *
and speak of your power;

That the peoples may know of your power *
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; *
your dominion endures throughout all ages.

The LORD is faithful in all his words *
and merciful in all his deeds.

The LORD upholds all those who fall; *
he lifts up those who are bowed down.

Reader: A reading from Pauls Epistle to the Romans Romans 7:15-25a

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the
4

very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good.
But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know
that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right,
but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is
what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that
dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good,
evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I
see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me
captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am!
Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through J esus
Christ our Lord!

Reader: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN This is my Song (see next page)

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord J esus Christ according to Matthew

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

J esus said to the crowd, "To what will I compare this generation? It is like
children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, `We played the
flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.' For
J ohn came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon'; the Son
of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Look, a glutton and a
drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by
her deeds." At that time J esus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent
and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the
Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone
to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. "Come to me, all you that are weary
and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon
you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Nicene Creed (please stand)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten
of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
Was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly
human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and
was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his
kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from
the Father and the Son.
Who, with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified.
Who has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

oppressed, prisoners and their families.

7

All: Lord, have mercy.

Leader: For ourselves, our families, our companions, and all those we love.
All: Lord, have mercy.

saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ.
All: To you, O Lord.

Presider: Lord of heaven and earth, hear the prayers we offer today, teach us the secrets of
your heart, and give us rest from our trials; through J esus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

Confession of Sin

Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God.
All: God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love
and serve only your will. Amen.

through the grace of J esus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.
Amen.

Prayer for a Birthday
Watch over thy child, O Lord, as her days increase; bless and guide her
wherever she may be. Strengthen her when she stands; comfort her when
discouraged or sorrowful; raise her up if she fall; and in her heart may thy peace
which passeth understanding abide all the days of her life; through J esus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Presider: Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and
sacrifice to God.

OFFERTORY HYMN The King of Love my Shepherd Is #646

THE HOLY COMMUNION BCP p. 361

Prayer over the Gifts

Presider: Let us pray.
All: God of grace, receive all we offer you this day.
Help us in all we do to offer ourselves as a true and living sacrifice;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer I

Presider: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.

Presider: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them to the Lord.

Presider: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider: It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of
life and fountain of mercy.

You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your
constant love; you have redeemed us in J esus Christ and knit us into one body.
Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life.

Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every
generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing (say):

9

Sanctus

All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

(stand or kneel)
Presider: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You
formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love.
You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards
and show forth your bountiful grace.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not
see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation,
abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us,
and prepared the way of salvation for all people.

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You
delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets
to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your
10

eternal Word, made mortal flesh in J esus. Born into the human family, and
dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on
the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior J esus Christ took bread, and when
he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said:
Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance
of me.

As supper was ending, J esus took the cup of wine, and when he had given
thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of
the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of
sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
All: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

Presider: Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your
creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the
Body and Blood of our Savior J esus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts
may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christs Body in the world. Bring
us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your
saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Music Notes
The first two stanzas of todays Offertory hymn This is my song were published during the
period between the two world wars and express a hope for lasting peace among all nations,
races, and cultures. The author of stanzas 1 and 2, Lloyd Stone (1912-1993) was born in
California and attended USC as a music major, intending to become a teacher. Instead, he
joined a circus bound for Hawaii and remained there for the rest of his life, writing poems and
songs. He was 22 years old when he wrote these verses. The author of the third stanza,
Georgia Elma Harkness (1891-1974), was the first woman to teach theology in an American
seminary. She was a pioneer for women in ministry and an early feminist theologian whose
early interest in global missions and in global and ecumenical Christianity continued
throughout her life. The verses are set to the tune Finlandia, derived from a tone poem of the
same name by Finnish composer J ean Sibelius. (information from: http://www.hymnary.org)
