David, adventure playgrounds are in short supply, read non-existent,
in Canada. There are pretenders that use the moniker adventure
playground but they are a far cry from the UK and mainland Europe
scene. Are they any in Scotland, if so, where? I started school in
Greenock back when I was a wee lad. Both my folks are from
Scotland. I was back for the first time in decades five years agp and
we went to the Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Scalpay. We loved it.
Cheers this fine Saturday.

An adventure playground is a community. Home made and in
constant flux led by the playing of the children and the adult who
support them. This is a bought thing. Pieces chosen from a
pre-determined catalogue of kit manufactured by richter/timber play.
True, their kit is better than most, but it is NOT an Adventure
playground. It is a sales opportunity.

PlayGroundology
Thanks Penny, makes sound sense. When far removed from anything
that even slightly resembles adventure playgrounds it's possible to
miss the essence, the real thing which as you say is community. Hope
you are well. Thanks for your comment. Hope you'll come back often.
Cheers, alex

Sorry to sound so Mrs Angry. Manufacturers have jumped on the
money being invested in Adventure playgrounds, through the last
government. This means that they have managed , at last, to redefine
what an APG is... ( a bunch of bought stuff, subject to regulation and
adult led. High money spent on capital invest, net rather than investing
in Playworkers/community workers. The desultory is is that now
corporate groups re coming into APGs and doing very poor copies, (in
some cases) of the bought play equipment, which is in turn a
bastardisation of kit that was created by APGs of the past, with
children and Playworkers working together. Does this explain my/our
frustration?
22 April 2012 06:23PM
PlayGroundology
Penny, you explain it very well - no need to be sorry. I've wanted to do
a post for sometime on adventure playgrounds. I've collected quite a
bit of what looks to be informed background information. I've no
personal experience though. Would you consider being a resource
person as I make my way to understanding the bigger picture of
adventure playgrounds? It would be great to have someone like you
to provide context and ensure that I'm hitting the right notes. I know
that books have been written about the subject so I'm a little timid
about throwing my hat in the ring with a post unless I have
experienced people who can provide some input. Let me know if you
are interested. It's something I'd like to take on over the coming
month. Hope all is well with you. Cheers, Alex.

I like this playground best - but I don't think it is the best choice for your cover photo.
When you crop it to size (851 x 315pixels) it's going to look a bit strange, I think. You'll lose
most of the foreground bridge even if you crop just above the child's head.

My Mom Helen died on Thursday and it's hard to stop the tears. I'm posting this story today because
she was an ardent fan of Manchester United and never missed watching their games from the comfort
of her favourite chair at home. This playground based on a football pitch design was opened by United
legend, Phil Neville.

Sorry to hear of your loss Alex,
sending you my sincere condolences.

you will have many happy and fond

Adrian thanks so much for your kind words. We do have many memories of our
times together and we're fortunate that they span so many years. Although
Canada was home for 6 decades of her life, Scotland was her heart. A few years
back, we celebrated their 50th anniversary there - a wonderful evening for all the
family. I love your cover photo and went net crawling to see if I could find any
images of the place myself - to no avail. Have you got any more photos that I
could publish here and credit you? By the way, thanks for The Economist article. I
haven't had a chance to read it yet but will in the coming week. Thanks again,
Alex

Kids wading in a model boat pond in Gourock, Scotland. Thinking a lot of this part of the world with my
Mom's passing. My Grandad on my father's side was a great model yachter. I have the Tosh Shield that
he won in 1952, as a member of the Port Glasgow club with his boat Fairy, hanging in my office.
