1.1 !otes on Parts of "#eech $PO"%
The reader sho$ld already be familiar with nouns& verbs and adjectives! These P"9 work more or
less as they always have! Verbs and adjectives can be said to be CopenD or Cf$44yD word classes& in
that they borrow from each other and change P"9 fre=$ently! Th$s:
Any verb can be $sed as a noun or an adjective
Any adjective can be $sed as a noun or verb
A pre-verb is what $sed to be called a modal or auxiliary verb! They modify an entire verb
phrase! Any pre-verb can also be $sed as a reg$lar verb!
Prepositions& numbers and particles sho$ld also be familiar terms! 2$st keep in mind that these
P"9 do not change classes& i!e! yo$ cannot say mi kepeken e ilo (instead: mi kepeken ilo)! Also note
that a noun may only be modified by another noun or an adjective! Th$s& altho$gh widely $sed
within the comm$nity& the no$n phrase jan (pi) lon tomo is $ngrammatical by the official r$les!
1.2. &'#ortant (ifferences fro' Vernacular Toki Pona
anpa is no longer a preposition! 0se lon noka instead
ala& mute and ale can now be $sed as n$mbers
kepeken and lon are no longer verbs (which means they cannot take objects1 yo$ can still say
e!g! mi lon)
lukin and sona are now pre'verbs
To say that yo$ speak CinD a lang$age yo$ now $se lon (not kepeken)& th$s: mi toki lon toki
Inli
/o pi with n$mbers: toki pi nanpa wan (Cfirst lang$ageD)
ali& kin& oko and namako are now simply synonyms of (the preferred) ale& a& lukin and sin&
respectively
kipisi and monsuta are $nofficial
