B. Setting!

The setting of a story is where

and when a story takes place,
as well the society in which a
story takes place. A story might
have one main setting, and
more specific settings where
scenes throughout the story
take place. In "1984", all the
action takes place in and
around London, which is a part
of Oceania. We do not see all of
Oceania, which is enormous,
but we do see where people
live, where Winston works, and
other parts of the city. !

Keep track of some of the

settings in the book below. Write the page on which the setting is described, a quote from the book, and the
description in your own words. We are trying to answer the questions, What kind of place is Oceania? and
What happens there?.!

C. Theme!

A theme is an idea that a story makes you think about deeply. Throughout the story, actions and
conflicts happen, settings are described, and characters have feelings or thoughts that make you
think of the same idea, but in different ways, again and again.!

As a class, we will complete the chart below for the theme of dehumanization. Dehumanization
means treating people so badly that they lose their good human qualities. When a person is
dehumanized, they lose their individuality (the parts of them that make them unique) as well as
their sense of being part of a community that cares for them. We can also think about
dehumanization as the loss of human dignity. So how does dehumanization happen in 1984?
How is Winston dehumanized?!

C. Political Acts!

Politics refers to the activities people do to try to get, keep, resist, fight against, or change power in
a group. We can see politics in a government, in a school, a sports team, or even a group of friends.
In the documentary "Please Vote for Me," we saw that politics can be frustrating, complicated, and
emotional as three candidates sought the position and power of the class monitor. !

Chapter five of our book is called "A Political Act". So what is the political act someone commits, and
why is it done? Is the person trying to get power in the Party? Is he or she trying to get power in his
or her own life? Is she or he trying to fight against the power of Big Brother and the Party?!

D. Symbols!

In a story, symbols are usually objects (things) that represent something else. A symbol can also be
an action. For example, a dictionary is a good symbol to represent Mr. C because Mr. C knows so
many words. Or if you see a math exam in a dream, it could be a symbol of fear, because you are
afraid of failing. (Ha ha, sorry Mr. Gurung and Mr. Pratik.) The objects below from the story might
symbolize fear, freedom, wishes, history, the poor economy, betrayal, control, or other feelings or
ideas.!

E. Imagery!

Imagery is the use of language that makes

you imagine using your senses (touch, sight,
smell, hearing, taste). Authors use imagery
to make their stories come alive for their
readers. !

1984 uses imagery to help us imagine the

world in which Winston lives a dejected life.
What do the streets look like? How do
people smell? What sounds does Winston
hear in his home? How do his food and
drink taste? How would Winstons face feel
if you touched it? (It wouldnt not feel
smooth and silky like my baby Bolitos
cheek.) The imagery in the story helps us
imagine life in the dystopia of Oceania. How
different is the imagery in 1984 from the
imagery in your community? !

F. Connection: Maslows Hierarchy of Needs!

In 1943, the psychologist Abraham Maslow created a theory to explain what motivates some people
to achieve great goals. Maslow thought that humans have different kinds of needs. He thought that
if a persons basic needs were not met, needs like getting food and water for survival or having a
safe place to live, then it would be more difficult to focus on their higher level needs like esteem
(respect) and self-actualization (becoming the best person you can be).!

Do you need these five levels of needs in your life? What about Winston in 1984? One way to
connect 1984 to Maslows theory is to look at how the Party controls peoples needs. Does the
Party allow people to have their physiological (body) needs met? Do people in Oceania have a safe
environment? Do they have loving and caring relationships? Do they respect themselves and
others? Are they creative? Can they tell right from wrong? Do they follow their dreams?!

The Party wants to control people, and it does not want people who think freely. Fill in the two
pyramids. In the first, jot some notes regarding how our
school helps (or does not help) to meet your needs. In
the second pyramid, write how the totalitarian Party
controls the needs of the population.!

G. Close Reading Strategies!

Close reading means reading a whole text or passage to understand it in as many ways as possible. When
we do close reading, we want to know what is happening, what the author is trying to do in the passage, how
the author uses different kinds of language, and how the author creates interest for the reader. After a close
reading, we can organize our thoughts into an oral or written commentary.!

!
TO DO A CLOSE READING OF A PASSAGE, YOU SHOULD READ IT AT LEAST THREE TIMES.!
!

Step 1: After the first reading, see if you can summarize the passage. Write notes, underline, highlight.!
Step 2. Read again and pay attention to the language being used, connections, and questions. Write more
notes.!
Step 3. Read again and see what the overall themes are and decide what the purpose of the passage is and
what effect it has on you. Keep writing notes.!

When you write a commentary after your close reading, your focus should NOT be on re-telling the plot.
Instead, you want to focus on what the passage means, what it makes us think about and how it does that.
You should also discuss some connections you make, some questions you still have, and predictions for
what might happen next.!

!
1. Authors purpose - What is the author trying to do?!
!

Authors are trying to do many things when they write, so when we do a close reading, we are trying to
understand the author's purpose for writing the passage. An author might be trying to accomplish many goals
including:!

introducing a character!
developing a character (let us know more about a character or letting a character change)!
comparing characters (show how they are different or similar)!
answering a question!
to foreshadow (give a hint of what might happen later in the story)!
introducing, developing, or resolving a conflict!
Providing more information about the setting of a story or the society in which the story happens!

!
2. Authors use of language!
!

The author might different kinds of figurative language, language that helps us imagine, to help us imagine
the story. !

irony is a situation that is unusual or amusing because something strange happens, or the ! opposite of
what is expected happens or is true. Imagine if a doctor gave you a medicine to !
make you feel
better, but instead the medicine killed you. That would be an irony. The !
situation would be ironic.!
imagery is language that makes us use our senses to imagine. Imagery makes us see, hear, !smell, touch,
and taste as we are reading.!
comparisons: metaphors and similes!
symbols!

!
!
3. Effect on the reader!
!

When we read, view, or listen to a text, we are affected in many ways. An effective text will make us think and
feel in many ways. After we read a text or passage, me might:!

we question why something happens or why someone is a certain way!

we realize, learn, or understand something, we answer a question we've had, think about a theme!
we feel....(surprised, shocked, curious, dislike of a character, confused sympathetic, like we can relate,
suspense, etc)!
we visualize!
we compare, we connect!
we change our minds!
