Combustion Characteristics of Chlorine-free Solid
Fuel Production from Municipal Solid Waste by
Hydrothermal Process
Journal of Energies
ISSN 1996-1073
http://www.mdpi.com/journal/energies
(October, 2012)

An experimental study on converting municipal solid waste (MSW) into chlorine-free solid fuel
using the combination of the hydrothermal process and the water-washing has been performed.
After the product was extracted from the reactor, water-washing experiments were then
conducted to obtain chlorine-free products with less than 3,000 ppm total chlorine content. A
series of combustion experiments were then performed for the products before and after the
washing process to determine the chlorine content in the exhaust gas and those left in the ash
after the combustion process at a certain temperature.

(December, 2011)

The energy supply is one of things that continually required by human, but due to the fossil
energys nature as a non-renewable energy resource, it can be ascertained that its supply is
increasingly diminished. In the other side, many developing countries including Indonesia have
been facing with a complex problem on how to appropriately handle municipal solid wastes
(MSW). This circumstance stimulates human to search for the other alternative energy as a
solution which should also environmentally friendly. In this paper, the research of converting
MSW into chlorine-free solid fuel using the combination of hydrothermal process and water-
washing has been performed.

Treating municipal solid wastes (MSW) not only solves the problem associated with the waste
disposal in Indonesia but also creates environmental friendly renewable energy to utilize it in
boilers, and this helps in reducing the amount of national usage of coal which is one of main
sources of the global warming. In this context, a technology to convert MSW into a useful form
of energy as a part-substitute for coal, will gain a greater importance at the present Indonesian
scenario especially for power industries.

Indonesia Energy Revolution Scenario and
Projection using MESAP/Planet Simulation Model
The 10th International Conference on Quality in Research
ISSN: 1411-1284

(December, 2007)
Indonesia Energy Revolution Scenario describes a development pathway which turns the
present situation into a sustainable energy supply. Two scenarios up to the year 2050 are
outlined in this report. The Reference Scenario is based on the reference scenario published by
the International Energy Agency in World Energy Outlook 2006, extrapolated forward from 2030
have been calculated using the MESAP/PlaNet simulation model. The Energy Revolution
Scenario has a target for the reduction of worldwide per capita carbon dioxide emissions to less
than 1.3tonnes per year by 2050.

(November, 2007)

The International Report Energy [R]evolution A Sustainable Indonesia Energy Outlook in
collaborate with Greenpeace and European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) offers a
combination of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency as a clean, cost-effective
pathway towards energy security that will have minimal impact on the climate system. It
advocates independence from volatile market fluctuations in fossil fuels as well as the dangers
of nuclear energy.

Indonesia Energy and Environment Book
as Author
http://bayu.in
(February, 2008 - in progress)

Energy and Environment Book in collaborate with Prof. Rinaldy Dalimi, PhD (expertise in Power
Energy). While energy has long been an important topic, concerns about humans
environmental footprint, such as that due to carbon dioxide, and concerns about security and
rapid global development, have recently brought this field to the forefront. These include
technological innovations for fossil fuel systems with primary emphasis on carbon dioxide
mitigation, and control of fine particle and other pollutant emissions. Our vision for the Energy
and Environment area is to hire strategically in high impact areas that compliment existing
strengths, with the goal to address nationally recognized basic research needs that will spark
the innovations necessary to close the enormous gap that exists between state-of-the-art
technology and the staggering requirements for a future of renewable energy.

Research Interests

Renewable and Alternative Energy
The study will address the technical, management, economics and analytical challenges that
need to be tackled in order to enable high penetration levels of solar, wind, biomass (including
waste) and other renewable energy technologies. By examining how renewable technologies can
be combined with storage, controls and other appropriate technologies, expects to build the
foundation for realizing a high penetration renewable energy future while enhancing its supply
to the global energy. In addition, by directly engaging utilities and other stakeholders in this
study, expects to build the confidence of regulators and utilities with respect to maximizing the
use of renewable energy technologies.

Waste to Energy Technology
How to reduce the effects of municipal solid waste (MSW) on health, environment or aesthetics
was a never ending problem, both in developing and developed countries. But nowadays as the
technology is being advanced and improved, the view on waste is also consequently changed.
Many people today realize that wastes have advantages and should be considered to have
important economical values due to its capability to be recycled and recovery as high value-
added material such as fuel or fertilizer. In addition, appropriate waste management also needs
to be concerned considering its implementation has unique characteristics in different places
even in developing or developed countries.

Energy and Environmental Economics
Energy is central to social and economic well-being. It provides personal comfort and mobility,
and is essential to most industrial and commercial wealth generation. However, energy
production and consumption place considerable pressures on the environment, including
contributing to climate change, damaging natural ecosystems, tarnishing the built environment
and causing adverse effects to human health. While these areas may be considered separately,
they are strongly interrelated. For example, improvements in energy efficiency both benefit
security of supply by reducing the amount of energy consumed and reduce emissions of
greenhouse gases and pollutants by reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. On the other hand,
energy market liberalization and more price competition benefit competitiveness through
reduced costs, but unless external costs are fully internalized and energy demand management
improves, the reduction of costs may bring price reductions that are likely to act as a
disincentive to energy saving and even encourage energy consumption.
