Letter of Intent

I wish to attend the 2009 GAS conference as an integral part of my current

post-graduate glass studies. Corning is the recognised centre of theoretical
contemporary glass studies and GAS is the premier contemporary creative
glass organization.

The attendance at this conference would provide opportunity to listen to and

to speak with recognised authorities and outstanding practitioners in the field
of contemporary glass. It would also provide the opportunity to experience a
unique overview of contemporary glass object first hand though Corning’s
outstanding collection of contemporary glass and to do this in the context of
museum of international quality.

Although what I do is within academia I am a passionate glassmaker and

such an opportunity coming within the period of my studies is one I must strive
to experience.

Following I include an inventory of qualifications and related material as a

means of establishing my credentials for consideration in the awarding of this
scholarship.

Summary of research and art practice

My theory project examines interpretations of the work of selected contemporary
Australian kiln glass practitioners recognised as leaders in their field.

Within Australia this provides an area of study contained in a small but

internationally recognised cohort who have emerged as a distinct
enclave. Using access to this group the project explores interpretations
of the practice of leading contemporary Australian glass artists.
Interviews are undertaken to identify the readings that position
contemporary Australian studio glass within the object/art spectrum.

The underlying premise of this project is that the unique quality of glass and
the contained nature of Australian contemporary glass culture provide an
outstanding opportunity for investigating the contextual positioning of creative
endeavour in the visual arts.

My practical project contributes the insight of shared practice and

encompasses flame-work, reverse painting and open mould lead crystal
casting. Each field contributes unique information into the nature of what I am
investigating. More significantly, it is the driving force behind the project, as to
understand the nature of what I do when I make with glass is why I initiated
my post graduate studies in the first place.
