Tutorial –7

1-A spur gear pair has pitch diameters of 12 and 30 cm. What is the largest tooth size, in terms of
diametral pitch , that can be used without having any interference ? Take the pressure angle to be
200.
2-A bevel gear pair is required to transmit motion with a velocity ratio4;1 The shaft angle is 40 0.
Design the rolling cones.

3-Two mating gear wheels have 20 and 40 involutes teeth of diametric pitch 1 and 200 pressure
angle . The addendum of wheel is to be made of the addendum of each wheel is be made of such a
length that the line of contact on each side of the pitch point has the maximum possible length .
Determine the addenda and the length of are of contact .

4-Two gear wheels mesh externally and are to give a velocity ratio of 3. The teeth are involutes
from with diametral pitch 2. Use standard addendum values and pressure angle is 18 0. Determine
1. the number of teeth in each wheel to avoid interference, 2. the lengths of path and arc of contact,
3. the number of pair of teeth in contact and 4. the angle of rotation of teeth pinion whilst any one
pair of teeth are in contact.

5-state the essential requirements of the mating profiles of two gear teeth for a constant velocity
ratio and show how these are satisfied by involutes profiles. Determine graphically or other wise,
the length of path of contact when a pinion of 18 teeth meshes with an internally toothed wheel
with 72 teeth . The pressure angle is 200.and the diametral pitch is equal to 2. The addenda on
pinion and wheel are 0.9 and 0.4 cm respectively.

6-Two spiral gear wheels A and B of same hand and equal diameter are used in a machine tool
drive .the normal pitch is 1.25 cm. And the shaft angle is 800. The speed of shaft A is 1.25 times
that of shaft B. Determine a. the spiral angle of each wheel and b.the number of teeth on each
wheel.
7-A pinion of 20 involutes teeth and 12.5 cm pitch circle diameter drives a rack . The addendum of
both the pinion and the rack is 6 mm .What is the least pressure angle which can be used find the
length of are of contact at a time.

8-A pair spiral gears is required to connect two shaft 17.5 cm apart, the shaft angle being 700.The
speed ratio is 1.5 and the faster wheel has 80 teeth and a pitch circle diameter of 10 cm. Find the
spiral angle of each wheel.

9-Two shaft are to be connected by spiral gear with a velocity ratio 3;1 The shaft angle is 45 0 and
the least distance between the shaft axes is to be 22.5 cm. The normal diametral pitch is to be 5
and the pinion is to have 20 teeth .Determine the pitch circle diameters and the serial angles if they
are of same hand.
10-Determine the pitch diameter , circular pitch , addendum., tooth thickness and clearance of a 22
tooth gear with standard full depth involutes of diametric pitch2.

1- What are the different type of motion with which a follower can move?

2-Explain with sketches the different types of cams & follower?

3-Write short notes on cams & followers ?

4-Why a roller follower is preferred to that of a knife –edged follower?

5- Define the following terms as applied to cam with a neat sketch:-


(a)- Base circle (b) Pitch circle (c) Pressure angle & Stroke of the follower.

6- A cam operating a knife edged follower has following data:


(a) Follower moves outwards through 40 mm during 60° of cam rotation.
(b) Follower dwells for the next 45°.
© Follower returns to its original position during next 90°.
(d) Follower dwells for the rest of the rotation.
The displacement of the follower is to take place with simple harmonic motion during both the
outward & return strokes . the last radius of the cam is 50 mm . draw the profile of the cam when
1.the axis of the follower passes through the cam axis & 2.the axis of the follower is offset 20 mm
towards right from the cam axis. If the cam rotates at 300 r.p.m. determine maximum velocity &
acceleration of the follower during the outward stroke & the return stroke. (ans-

7-A cam rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 100 r.p.m. is required to give motion to knife
edge follower as below:
(a) Follower to move outwards through 25 mm during 120°of cam rotation
(b) Follower to dwell for the next 60° of cam rotation
(c ) Follower to return to its starting position during next 90° of cam rotation & Follower to dwell
for the rest of the cam rotation .
The minimum radius of the cam is 50mm & the line of stroke of the follower passes through the
axis of the camshaft ? if the displacement of the follower takes place with uniform & equal
acceleration & return stoke.

8- A cam with 30 mm as minimum diameter is rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 1200 r.p.m
& has to give the following motion to roller follower 10mm in diameter:
(a) Follower to complete outward stroke of 25mm during 120° of cam rotation with equal uniform
acceleration & retardation:
(b) Follower to dwell for 60°of cam rotation:
(c ) Follower to return to its initial position during 90° of cam rotation with equal uniform
acceleration & retardation:
( d) Follower to dwell for the remaining 90° of cam rotation.
Determine the maximum velocity of follower during the outstroke & also the uniform acceleration
of follower on the outstroke & the return stoke.

9- A cam rotating clock wise at a uniform speed of 200 r.p.m is required to move an offset roller
follower with a uniform & equal acceleration & retardation on both the outward & return strokes
the angle of ascent the angle of dwell (between ascent & descent) & the angle of descent is 120° ,
60° & 90°respectively the follower dwells for the of rotation . The least radius of the cam is 50mm
the lift of the follower is 25 mm & the diameter of roller is 10mm the line of stroke of the follower
is offset by 20mm form the axis of the cam .Draw the cam profile & find the maximum velocity &
acceleration of the follower during the out stroke.
10-Desingn a cam to raise a valve with simple harmonic motion through 50 mm in 1/3 of a
revolution keep if fully raised through 1/12 revolution & to lower it with harmonic motion in 1/6
revolution. The valve remains closed during the reset of the revolution. The diameter of the roller
is 20mm & the minimum radius of the cam is 25 mm. The diameter of the camshaft is 25 mm. The
axis of the valve rod passes through the axis of the camshaft. If camshaft rotates at uniform speed
of 100 r.p.m: find the maximum velocity & acceleration of a valve during raising & lowering.

1- Draw the displacement velocity & acceleration diagram for a follower when it moves with
simple harmonic motion. Derive the expression for velocity
& acceleration during outstroke & return stroke of the follower

2 –Draw the displacement velocity & acceleration diagrams for a follower when it moves with
uniform acceleration & retardation Derive the expression for velocity & acceleration during
outstroke & return stroke of the follower.

3- Derive expressions for displacement velocity & acceleration for a tangent cam operating on a
radial translating roller follower:

(a) When the contact is on straight flank

(b) When the contact is on circular noise.

4- Derive the expression for displacement velocity & acceleration for a circular are cam operating
a flat faced follower

(a) When the contact is on circular flank

(b) When the contact is on circular noise


5-A cam rotating clock wise at a uniform speed of 200r.mp.m is required to move an offset roller
follower with a uniform & equal acceleration & retardation on both the outward & return strokes .
the angle of ascent the angle of dwell (between ascent &b descent ) & the angle of descent is 120°,
60°, & 90° respectively. The follower dwells for the reset of cam rotation . the least radius of the
cam is 50mm ,the left of the follower is 25mm and the diameter of the roller is 10mm. The line of
stroke of the follower is offset by 20mm form the axis of the cam Draw the cam profile & find the
maximum velocity & acceleration of the follower during the outstroke?
6- A symmetrical tangent cam operating a roller follower has the following particulars:
Radius of base circle of cam=40 mm ,roller radius =20mm angle of ascent =75° total lift =20mm
speed of cam shaft=300r.p.m.

7– A cam profile consists of two circular Ares of radii24 mm & 12mm joined by straight line
giving the follower a lift of 12mm the follower is roller of 24 mm radius & its line of action is
straight line passing thro 1 gh the camshaft axis . when the cam shaft has a uniform speed of 500
rev/min, find the maximum velocity & acceleration of the follower while in contact with the
straight flank of the cam ?

8- The following particulars relate to a symmetrical tangent cam operating a roller follower:
Least radius 30mm.nose radius 24mm,roller radius=17.5 mm distance between cam shaft &

9- Following is the data for a circular are cam working with a faced reciprocating follower :
