Tutorial –7
1-A spur gear pair has pitch diameters of 12 and 30 cm. What is the largest tooth size, in terms of
diametral pitch , that can be used without having any interference ? Take the pressure angle to be
200.
2-A bevel gear pair is required to transmit motion with a velocity ratio4;1 The shaft angle is 40 0.
Design the rolling cones.
3-Two mating gear wheels have 20 and 40 involutes teeth of diametric pitch 1 and 200 pressure
angle . The addendum of wheel is to be made of the addendum of each wheel is be made of such a
length that the line of contact on each side of the pitch point has the maximum possible length .
Determine the addenda and the length of are of contact .
4-Two gear wheels mesh externally and are to give a velocity ratio of 3. The teeth are involutes
from with diametral pitch 2. Use standard addendum values and pressure angle is 18 0. Determine
1. the number of teeth in each wheel to avoid interference, 2. the lengths of path and arc of contact,
3. the number of pair of teeth in contact and 4. the angle of rotation of teeth pinion whilst any one
pair of teeth are in contact.
5-state the essential requirements of the mating profiles of two gear teeth for a constant velocity
ratio and show how these are satisfied by involutes profiles. Determine graphically or other wise,
the length of path of contact when a pinion of 18 teeth meshes with an internally toothed wheel
with 72 teeth . The pressure angle is 200.and the diametral pitch is equal to 2. The addenda on
pinion and wheel are 0.9 and 0.4 cm respectively.
6-Two spiral gear wheels A and B of same hand and equal diameter are used in a machine tool
drive .the normal pitch is 1.25 cm. And the shaft angle is 800. The speed of shaft A is 1.25 times
that of shaft B. Determine a. the spiral angle of each wheel and b.the number of teeth on each
wheel.
7-A pinion of 20 involutes teeth and 12.5 cm pitch circle diameter drives a rack . The addendum of
both the pinion and the rack is 6 mm .What is the least pressure angle which can be used find the
length of are of contact at a time.
8-A pair spiral gears is required to connect two shaft 17.5 cm apart, the shaft angle being 700.The
speed ratio is 1.5 and the faster wheel has 80 teeth and a pitch circle diameter of 10 cm. Find the
spiral angle of each wheel.
9-Two shaft are to be connected by spiral gear with a velocity ratio 3;1 The shaft angle is 45 0 and
the least distance between the shaft axes is to be 22.5 cm. The normal diametral pitch is to be 5
and the pinion is to have 20 teeth .Determine the pitch circle diameters and the serial angles if they
are of same hand.
10-Determine the pitch diameter , circular pitch , addendum., tooth thickness and clearance of a 22
tooth gear with standard full depth involutes of diametric pitch2.
