1.2 MULTIBUSTYPES
In2000Bronkhorstdevelopedtheirfirstdigitalinstrumentsaccordingtothe
multibusprinciple.Thebasicpcboardontheinstrumentcontainedallof
the general functions needed for measurement and control, including
alarm,totalizinganddiagnosticfunctions.IthadanalogI/Osignalsandalso
anRS232connectionasastandardfeature.Inadditiontothisthereisthe
possibilityofintegratinganinterfaceboardwithDeviceNet,ProfibusDP,
Modbus , FLOWBUS or EtherCAT protocol. The first generation (MBCI)
wasbasedona16bitFujitsucontroller.Itwassupersededin2003bythe
Multibustype2(MBCII).Thisversionwasalsobasedonthe16bitFujitsu
controllerbutithadseveralimprovementstotheMBCI.Oneofthemisthe
current steering of the valve. It reduced heat production and improved
controlcharacteristics.ThelatestversionMultibuscontrollertype3(MBC3)isintroducedin2011.Itisbuildarounda
72MHz32bitNXPARMcontroller.IthasADandDAcontrollersonboardwhichmakesitpossibletomeasurenoise
freeandcontrolvalveswithoutdelays.Theinternalcontrolloopruns6timesfastercomparedtotheMBCIItherefore
control stability has improved significantly. It also has several improved functions like reverse voltage protection,
inrushcurrentlimitationandovervoltageprotection.
MBC3instrumentscanberecognisedbytheMBC3placedonlowerleftside
oftheinstrumentlabel(seeexample).

PROFIBUS DP is a 2wire industrial data communication standard (Field bus) which allows automation components
likesensors,actuatorsandcontrollerstoexchangeinformation.
SimplePROFIBUSsystem.
PROFIBUSDPisamaster/slavebussystem.Bronkhorstinstrumentsareallslaves.Thereisnomutualcommunication
betweenPROFIBUSDPslaves,onlybetweenamasterandslave.Eachslavemusthaveitsownuniquestationaddress
onthebus,otherwisethereisnocommunicationpossible.Settingslavestationaddresscanbeperformedbyeither:

2.1 GENERAL
The following installation guidelines only apply to data transfer using copper cables (RS 485) to EN
50170.Furthermore,operatorsofPROFIBUSequipmentarestronglyrecommendedonlytousefieldbus
devicesandcomponentswhichhavebeencertifiedbythePROFIBUSUserOrganizatione.V.(PNO).
Certified products have undergone extensive tests carried out by specialists to demonstrate their
compliance to the PROFIBUS standard EN 50170 in combination with PROFIBUS devices from other
manufacturers.PROFIBUSdatatransferisbasedontheRS485standard1.Therelevantfeaturesforuse
withPROFIBUSDParedescribedinEN50170.
PROFIBUSDPfieldbuswiringisthecauseofmanyproblemsifnotproperinstalled.

PROFIBUS cables are shielded twistedpair copper cables which differ from each other in the type of wire
(fixed/flexible) and/or sheath. The two inner cores of a PROFIBUS cable have green and red insulation. The
specifications in this chapter are primarily intended to provide a general introduction and describe the cable
propertiestobeconsidered(seealsoIEC6178453).
The cables for PROFIBUS DP are assigned to categories, the socalled line types, which define specific physical
parameters.TheindividuallinetypesareidentifiedbythecapitallettersA,B,CandD.Whenplanninganetworkyou
shouldexclusivelyuselinetypeA.

The data transmission rate must be identical for all segments of a PROFIBUS line. The table below shows the

APROFIBUSDPnetworksegmentisbasedonanRS485standardandrequirestwo(2)andonlytwo(2),termination
resistornetworks,ateachofthefurthestendsofthePROFIBUSDPcabling.Theseresistornetworksareintegratedin
theIP20connectorsandcanbeenabledbyaslideswitchonthesideoftheconnector.Ifconnectorswithoutthese
integratedresistorsareused,aspecialterminationplugcontainingthisresistormustbeplaced.

To allow correct bus termination, each station must connect the signals DGND and VP (5 V) to pins 5 and 6 of the
connector,respectively.The5Vsupplyfortheterminatingresistors(VP)shouldhaveaminimumcurrentratingof10
mA (thecurrent load can increase to 12mA if a NULLsignal is sent through thebus). Thecurrent rating shouldbe
increasedtoapp.90mAifyouneedtobeabletosupplyothertypesofdevicesonthebussuchasbusterminalsand
opticalfibercabledrivers.
The electrical equipment in a plant is generally connected to a functional ground. It is used to lead away potential
equalizationandinterferencecurrentsandtoensurecompliancewithEMCregulationsandshouldthusbeinstalled
withregardtotherequirementsofhighfrequencycurrents.

cablereflections,busconnectorsshouldbeprovidedwith
builtinseriesinductorsasshownbelow.

If you want to give your instrument specific values for certain variables at startup you can do this by means of
parametersettings.Inyourmasterconfigurationtool,pointtotheactualslaveinstrumentandselect[Parameterdata]
(alsoaccessiblesometimesfromslaveconfigurationscreen).Afterpressing[common]allavailableparameterdatawill
becomevisible.
Selecting/doubleclickingonavaluetobechangedwilleitherpopupanotherwindowwithavailableoptionsora
windowwithaneditbox.

4 SLAVEADDRESSING
4.1 GENERAL
When you have installed your Bronkhorst meter/controller PROFIBUS DP slave and made right settings for slave
configurationandparameterdata,youcangiveyourinstrumenttheslaveaddressyouwant.Defaultinstrumentswill
be delivered with slave address 126. This address has been agreed by the PROFIBUS organization to be free for

With the microswitch on top of the instrument it is possible to change and readout the settings for slave station
address and baud rate. The Leds will indicate the tens of the address with green flashes and the units with red
flashes. For baud rateindication both Leds will flash (baud rate will adjust to master setting automatically and is
thereforereadonly).

If PROFIBUS communication problems occur, so when instrument is not in data exchange mode, the
instrument forces the valve (controllers only) into a safe state mode. This safe state depends on the
typeofvalve.NCvalveswillbeclosed,NOvalveswillbeopenedfully.ThegreenandredLedontopof
theinstrumentindicatesthismodebyashortflash:0.1secon,2secoff.Aslongasthereisnodata
exchange between master and slave the instrument will stay in this mode. It will leave this mode
automaticallywhendataexchangestarts.ViatheRS232communicationinterfaceitispossibletoforce
the instrument out of the safe state by changing the control mode to a value other than 0. At for
examplecontrolmode=18(RS232)orcontrolmode=1(Analoginput)theinstrumentwillnotgetinto
safestate.
