2.3 PROFIBUSDPCABLES

PROFIBUS cables are shielded twistedpair copper cables which differ from each other in the type of wire
(fixed/flexible) and/or sheath. The two inner cores of a PROFIBUS cable have green and red insulation. The
specifications in this chapter are primarily intended to provide a general introduction and describe the cable
propertiestobeconsidered(seealsoIEC6178453).

The cables for PROFIBUS DP are assigned to categories, the socalled line types, which define specific physical
parameters.TheindividuallinetypesareidentifiedbythecapitallettersA,B,CandD.Whenplanninganetworkyou

To allow correct bus termination, each station must connect the signals DGND and VP (5 V) to pins 5 and 6 of the
connector,respectively.The5Vsupplyfortheterminatingresistors(VP)shouldhaveaminimumcurrentratingof10
mA (thecurrent load can increase to 12mA if a NULLsignal is sent through thebus). Thecurrent rating shouldbe

The electrical equipment in a plant is generally connected to a functional ground. It is used to lead away potential

withregardtotherequirementsofhighfrequencycurrents.
