SEISMIC RESISTANT STRUCTURES: ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Course Description
Hong Kong has been classified as a region of moderate seismicity. It is recognized
from the national seismic intensity zoning map 1990 and the national seismic ground motion
parameter zoning map 2001 that low-to-moderate earthquakes with the intensity VII may
occur in the region of Hong Kong with peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.15g in Hong
Kong Island and of 0.1g in Kowloon peninsula and New Territories corresponding to a 10%
probability of exceedance in 50 years. The seismic intensity VII with PGA of 0.15g for all
sites within Hong Kong may then be considered for typical structures. The 512 Wenchuan
earthquake of 2008 and the 420 Lushan of 2013 in Sichuan and the 311 Tohoku earthquake
of 2011 in Japan have awakened the public of their potential exposure to earthquake-related
hazards, as seismicity has not been explicitly considered in the conventional structural design
and construction with the exceptions of some lifeline infrastructures in Hong Kong.
The Buildings Department has recently launched a public consultation to seek views
on whether statutory seismic-resistant building design standards should be introduced in
Hong Kong. These two one-day CPD courses are developed to provide practicing engineers
with fundamental concepts of seismic engineering, a background necessary for understanding
and performing seismic analysis and design of building structures, ability to recognize
deficiencies of the current building design practice in Hong Kong, and basic skills to
incorporate seismic-resistant elements in future design of concrete structures to improve the
earthquake preparedness of Hong Kong for the public.

Instructor
Ir Professor J.S. Kuang () is a Professor of Civil Engineering at The
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received his PhD in engineering
science from the University of Cambridge, UK, and PhD in civil engineering from The
University of Hong Kong. His research spans seismic analysis and design of concrete
structures, seismic vulnerability assessment of buildings, large-scale experiment of structural
concrete, and computational mechanics and computing in structural engineering. Ir Professor
Kuang's outstanding research on seismic resistant structures has earned him the prestigious
T.K. Hsieh Award and Telford Premium by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) UK in
2006 and 2014, respectively, and the HKIE Transactions Prize by the Hong Kong Institution
of Engineers (HKIE) in 2007.
Professor Kuang served as the coordinator of an international team for the 512
Wenchuan earthquake field investigation in 2008 and a member of the 420 Lushan
earthquake field investigation team in 2013. Professor Kuang is a Chartered Engineer and a
Fellow of ICE, IStructE and HKIE. He served as President of The International Society for
Computing in Civil and Building Engineering (ISCCBE) from 2010 to 2014. ISCCBE is one
of the world's leading international professional societies in civil, construction and structural
engineering.
