PHILADELPHIA (July 9) Philadelphia Inquirer Editor Bill Marimow announced the promotions of Sandra Clark to
Managing Editor, Features/Operations/Digital and Gabriel Escobar to Managing Editor, News/Digital, effective
immediately. In this new role, Clark will oversee The Inquirers features department, the copy desk, news desk, graphics,
photo and Inquirer.com. Escobar will lead the Metro desk, business news, health and science, the investigative team,
and he will work closely with those teams responsible for further developing the companys digital strategy.

These promotions guarantee our commitment to readers that we will provide the best news report in print, online,
social and mobile in our region, said Bill Marimow, Editor, The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Clark has successfully served as Inquirer Deputy Managing Editor since 2011, leading the print and digital coverage of
arts, entertainment, and features. Many special sections reporting on cultural institutions in Philadelphia, including
The Franklin Institute and The Barnes Museum, were initiated and published under the direction of Clark. Additionally,
Clark is responsible for newsroom operations, managing numerous contracts with The Inquirers syndicates and wire
services. She also guides web strategy as editor of Inquirer.com, leading the inaugural launch of the website in April
2013. Clark was recruited to The Inquirer from the University of Kansas by Inquirer Associate Editor Emeritus Acel
Moore. Clark took a six-year leave to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa and also worked as acting country
director/administrator for Africare/Mozambique. Clark serves on the boards of the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper
Editors and the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors.

Sandy has been at the epicenter in moving The Inquirer into the digital age, said Marimow. Since 2011, she has
overseen a department that has distinguished itself for its unparalleled coverage of the arts, entertainment and features
throughout the Philadelphia region.

This new leadership role provides me even more opportunities to tap into the wealth of ideas represented in a
newsroom that is incredibly committed to serving its readers and the many traditions of The Inquirer, said Clark.
All of us in the newsroom, and on the business side of the company, are more than up to the challenge of creating an
atmosphere that encourages dynamic and profitable growth for our digital and print publications.

Escobar has served as Deputy Managing Editor, News, since 2012, overseeing the Inquirer newsroom staff that covers
the city, Pennsylvania suburbs, and New Jersey. Escobar was integral in developing Inquirer.com and its social media
linkages. From 2007 to 2011, Escobar was The Inquirers Metro Editor. He has had a distinguished career in journalism
that includes 16 years at The Washington Post, where he was a foreign correspondent covering South America and the
city editor. Escobar has also worked at the Dallas Morning News, the Philadelphia Daily News and the Hartford Courant.

Gabe is an experienced and skillful editor, who has inspired the city, Pennsylvania suburban and New Jersey staffs to
produce a news report that is informative, hard-hitting and engaging, said Marimow.

I am honored by the appointment and humbled by the opportunity to help lead this very talented newsroom, said
Escobar. There is tremendous potential for how we can further connect our award-winning reporting with readers
throughout our region. I am excited about the many possibilities that my new role will provide in achieving that end
