Compare and Contrast Essay
The cost of college tuition has risen continuously for years; the rise is due to the
economic downturn. The recession that the United States has fallen into has made an epidemic
for high school graduates. College costs are causing graduates is causing a drop in the number of
students going to colleges, this is causing a mass flow of untrained and uneducated workforce.
The articles used in this essay are informational about the costs of colleges and why they have
risen and the spending trends of colleges. The names of these articles are For-Profit College
Entry and Cost Efficiency: Stochastic Frontier Estimates vs Two-Year Public and Nonprofit
Colleges and College Spending Trends Show Students Bearing A Growing Share Of the
Costs. Out of these two articles the one that is argued the best is Sav G.T.s article For-Profit
College Entry and Cost Efficiency.
In these articles the organisation is very different. For-Profit College Entry and Cost
Efficiency is setup in a paper formation with an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs
with resources and facts, and a conclusion paragraph wrapping up all the lose ends and thoughts
that the author had. This takes any Whys and Hows that were left unexplained. In the article
College Spending Trends the set up is a newspaper or magazine style with short two or three
sentence paragraphs, but this article also has an abundance of facts and data arguing its point, the
data is scattered around the article and often has the reader with an unexplained statistic. The
article with the better setup/style is Sav,G.T.s article For-Profit College Entry and Cost
Lilly 2
Efficiency because it has better organization, is argued better, and has facts placed in the proper
areas.

The next topic that comes into the cross hairs is the overall logic of these two articles.
The logic that is placed into Sav G.T.s article For-Profit College Entry and Cost Efficiency he
argues his point with direct quotes, facts, and sources. For example, In Sav G.T.s article he
states that the credit hours that teachers log and what teachers actually spend teaching are very
different (Sav 3). The author shows that he has knowledge on the subject and does not strain to
prove his point, this shows the reader that the source is credible. The other article College
Spending Trends has logic that is thrown together in a scattered pattern. His facts lead in all
different directions and cover multiple problems, confusing the reader drawing their attention off
of the topic and onto another problem befor the thought is finished. Overall logic is what draws
people in and teaches them, plus what shows them that the author is credible. The article that has
the best overall logic is Sav G.Ts For-Profit College Cost and Efficiency because his logic is
backed up with facts and he never leaves an question unanswered.
The level of formality in these two articles are vastly different. The article College
Spending Trends is in a newspaper format that is more relaxed than formal. The article travels
off topic and extends from one extreme to the other, for example the article goes from a relaxed
almost humor format to covering the reader with facts and data. One example from College
Spending Trends, the article shows facts about college sports like the 3.4% drop in college
sports, but then it snaps back to the topic in the same paragraph showing that community
colleges have taken the brunt of the economic strain. The other article For-Profit College Cost
and Efficiency is in a very formal. The article is in a research paper format/ style, it contains
facts where they should be, resources and in-text notation throughout the article. These two
Lilly 3
articles both contain the ability to be placed into a formal context but one is already there. The
article that has the best formality is Sav G.T.s For-Profit College Cost and Efficiency because
the author wrote in a style that was professional and sounded like the author knew what he was
talking about.
One of Aristotle's appeals is logos, in these articles logos is the data, statistics, and facts.
Both Blumenstkys College Spending Trends, and Sav G. T.s For-Profit College Entry and
Cost Efficiency articles show logos in their articles. Sav G. T.s article has an entire paragraph
dedicated to data, in this article he shows facts, studies and other pieces of data that back up his
claim. Sav G. T. breaks down each piece of data and explains how it relates to his topic, but he
can be vague on some points in the article. In Blumenstkys article facts are thrown throughout
the article. There are points where the reader has to ask why, or how is that relevant. What
Blumenstky did right is that he supplied plenty of data that was to the point, what was wrong was
that the data was scattered and was not followed up with any explanations. The Article that has
the best data, facts, statistics is Sav G. T.s article, this is because he always supplied and answer
to why he put data in the article and never made the reader stop and think about why the fact was
relevant.
The audiences that these two articles were set up for are very different. In Blumenstyks
article is in a newspaper format so it is aimed for a more laid back audience that may just be
picking up his/ her daily newspaper. Now on the one hand this makes the article easier for people
with a lower reading level to to comprehend, but it also dulls down the seriousness and the style
of writing discredits the author. The other article For-Profit College Entry and Cost Efficiency
is written in a essay format, this gives little bending from an academic to a light reading essay.
By doing this the author shows his credibility in that this article is for serious reading. Between
Lilly 4
these two articles the one that has reader considerations is Blumenstkys College Spending
Trends. The reason that Blumenstkys article has the best audience consideration because it
allows more readers to comprehend and accept his information even though it comprises the
authors credibility.
In conclusion the article that was argued the best was. The article that showed the best
organization, overall logic, level of formality, and data analysis. This article was lacking an
important attribute, audience consideration. Sav G.T.s Article For-Profit College Entry and
Cost Efficiency. This article showed the overall potential to draw the readers in and keep them
on the same page as the writer. It also allowed the writer to teach the readers about the
knowledge on the subject that is present and that he never had to overreach is boundary on the
subject.
