Baby with
mumps
Mumps
an acute contagious
disease, the characteristic
feature of w/c is swelling of
one or both parotid
glands
caused by a mumps virus
w/c is a member of the
family Paramyxomviridae,
genus Paramyxovirus, is
antigenically related to the
parainfuenza viruses.
Pathophysiology:
The primary site of viral
replication is the epithelium
of the upper respiratory
tract, and rarely, the
infection can remain
localized to the respiratory
tract. Usually, the virus
spreads quicly to the local
lymphoid tissue and
viraemia often follows,
enabling the virus to travel
to distant parts of the body.

!nfected mononuclear cells
are also a means of spread
of the virus. Mumps virus
has an a"nity for glandular
epithelium# virus replication
often occurs in the parotid
gland ductal epithelium,
causing interstitial edema,
local infammation, and
painful swelling of the gland.
Mode of
transmission:
$irect contact w/ the
infected person.
%ontact w/ secretions
from the mouth & nose
of an infected person.
%ontact w/ articles in
his/her immediate
environment w/c have
been freshly soiled w/
secretion from the
nasopharyn'.
Incubation Period:
()*)+ days, usually
(, days
Period of
Communicability:
-egins before the glands
are swollen & remains for an
unnown length of time, but
it is presumed to last as long
as any localized glandular
swelling remains.
Signs &
Symptoms:

ear, angle of .aws & down
