DESCRIPTION

Introduction to statistics and probability in engineering. Discrete and continuous
distributions, sampling and inference of mean and variance. Hypothesis testing, design of
experiments and statistical quality control of engineering components and systems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Perform statistical analysis on engineering data including calculation of confidence
intervals, point estimation and statistical tests.
2. Evaluate probabilities and perform statistical quality control on raw and processed
data.
3. Utilize a common software tool to perform statistical analysis.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Lecture, class discussion, problem solving through self-study and in-class group and
self study methods. Electronic tools and IT applications, such as BlackBoard, will be
used to enhance the educational process wherever advantageous and practicable.

STUDENT EVALUATION PLAN

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Class
Instruction:
Students will be requested to prepare reading assignments and solve
sample problems in the text prior to attending classes, so that they can
participate in class discussions. Lectures in class will only focus on major
issues and difficult points in the chapter. Students have to follow up by
fulfilling their reading assignments, solving problems, participating in
class discussions, and showing up during office hours.
Homework: Students will be assigned homework regularly. Homework will consist
of review questions, problems and/or case studies, and, unless
otherwise directed, must be completed individually. All homework,
unless otherwise directed, must be completed individually and be
submitted using only one side of the paper with the students name and
ID number must be written on the top of each page. Students are not
allowed to submit late assignments except upon prior agreement with
the instructor. Failure to submit an assignment on time results in
getting a zero for that assignment.
Exams and Drop
Quizzes:
There will be two exams: 1 midterm exam and 1 final exam. Dates for
the midterms and for the final exam are indicated on the tentative
course schedule.
There will also be quizzes held at the end of each class, to be
determined through the course of the semester. Exams will focus on
problem solving and will be similar in nature to the homework
problems and quizzes. While the majority of questions will be problem-
oriented, there may also be recognition (multiple choice/true-false)
questions.
There may, at the instructors discretion, also be drop quizzes. Drop
quizzes are intended to be given any time, to test students follow up

ACADEMIC POLICIES
Academic Integrity
Academic honesty is of utmost importance at AUD, as described in the Student Handbook. Students
are expected to demonstrate academic integrity by completing their own work, assignments and
other assessment exercises. Submission of work from another person, whether it is from printed
sources or someone other than the student; previously graded papers; papers submitted without
proper citations; or submitting the same paper to multiple courses without the knowledge of all
instructors involved can result in a failing grade. Incidents involving academic dishonesty will be
reported to university officials for appropriate sanctions.

Furthermore, students must always submit work that represents their original words or ideas. If any
words or ideas used in a class posting or assignment submission do not represent the students
original words or ideas, all relevant sources must be cited along with the extent to which such
sources were used. Words or ideas that require citation include, but are not limited to, all hard copy
or electronic publications, whether copyrighted or not, and all verbal or visual communication when
the content of such communication clearly originates from an identifiable source.
Classroom Atmosphere
As a courtesy to the class, mobile phones and pagers must be silenced or turned off so that they will
not disturb the class. Possession of active cell phones or communication devices during exams is
unacceptable and will result in assignment of an (F) grade in the exam.
Attendance
Due to the nature of the course, attendance and class participation are both important aspects of
the learning experience. For this reason, students are expected to arrive to class on-time, to attend
all classes, and actively participate in class discussions. Students are required to abide by the
university policy on attendance published in the Undergraduate Catalog and the Student Handbook.
Make-up
Some scheduled class meetings that do not take place because of declared holidays, instructor
illness or any unforeseen circumstances may be rescheduled by the University or the instructor.
AUD School of Engineering p5

These make up class session will be scheduled in consultation with students. Any class activity
(lecture, exam, class presentation, etc.) that cannot be performed because of such class cancellations
will take place during the first class meeting held after reconvening, in order to preserve the order of
the class schedule as much as possible.
