Islamic architecture has used mosaic techniques to decorate religious
buildings and palaces since Muslims conquered the eastern provinces
of the Byzantine Empire. In Syria and Egypt, the Arabs were infuenced
by the great tradition of Roman and Early Christian mosaic art.
During the reign of the Umayyad Dynasty, mosaic-making remained
a fourishing art forminIslamic culture and it is continued in the art of
Azulejo in various parts of the Arab world.
The frst great religious building of Islam, the Dome of the Rock in
Palestine, which was built between 688-692 AD, was decorated with
glass mosaics both inside and outside. Only parts of the interior
decorationsurvived. The richforal motifs follow the Romantraditions,
and is Islamic only in the sense that the vocabulary is syncretic and
does not include representation of men or animals.

The most striking elements of this room are found in the laser-cut foor-to-ceiling
palm trees that stand out as modern interpretations of UAE heritage. The crystal
chandeliers, complemented by the crystal-studded columns, command attention
and complete the feeling of richesse when contrasted with the ornate, custom-made,
blue and gold furniture.

Hospitality takes pride of place in the Middle East, and when it comes to dining, the Middle
Easternculture is especially generous. Arabs will never host aguest without oferingat least
dried fruits or cofee or sweets. More often than not, meals are served to share and eating
is a communal activity that truly serves as a form of bonding. Most Middle Eastern food
can be eaten by hand and it is rare to see Arabs eat their own cuisine with forks and knives.
Only the very best is served to guests and expressing gratitude is not only the done thing, it
is rude not to compliment the host on a dinner well eaten.

The Silk Routes were important paths for cultural, commercial and technological exchange
between traders, merchants, pilgrims and urban dwellers from Ancient China, India, Tibet,
Persia and Mediterranean countries for almost 3,000 years. It gets its name fromthe lucrative
Chinese silk trade, which began during the Han Dynasty. Extending 4,000 miles, the routes
enabled people to transport goods and luxuries such as silk, satin and other fne fabrics,
musk, perfumes, spices, medicines, jewels, glassware and even rhubarb, as well as serving
as a conduit for the spread of knowledge, ideas and cultures. Trade on the Silk Road was a
signifcant factor in the development of the great civilizations and in several respects helped
lay the foundations of the modern world .

The colour red is the hottest of the warmtones and is knownfor drawing a visceral reaction. In
various cultures, the colour red takes on a variety of meanings. In the West, red denotes power
and a take-charge attitude, hence the red power tie for business people and the red carpet for
celebrities and VIPs. In China, red is the colour of happiness and prosperity.
In interiors, red is a strong colour that brings warmth to a roomand gives it an air of being
rooted and steady. It is widely used as the colour for an accent wall in living rooms and areas
that are meant to be social.

Nothing can exceed the skill with which the Muslim wood-carvers of Persia, Syria, Egypt and
Spain designed and executed the richest paneling and other decorations for wall linings, ceilings,
pulpits and all kinds of fttings and furniture. The mosques and private houses of Cairo, Damascus
and other Oriental Cities are full of the most elaborate and minutely delicate woodwork.
A favourite style of ornament was to cover the surface with very intricate interlacing patterns,
formed by fnely moulded ribs; the various geometrical spaces between the ribs were then flled
in with small pieces of wood carved with foliage in slight relief. The use of diferent woods such
as ebony or box, inlaid so as to emphasize the design, combined with the ingenious richness of
the patterns, give this class of woodwork an almost unrivaled splendour of efect. Carved ivory
is also often used for the flling in of the spaces. The Arabs are past masters in the art of carving
fat surfaces in this way. A gate in the mosque of the sultan Bargoug (Cairo, 14th century) well
illustrates this appreciation of lines and surfaces. The pulpit or mimbar (15th century) from a
Cairo mosque, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, is also a good example in the same style,
the small spaces in this case being flled in with ivory carved in fat relief.
Screens made up of labyrinths of complicated joinery, consisting of multitudes of tiny balusters
connecting hexagons, squares or other forms, with the fat surfaces constantly enriched with
small carvings, are familiar to every one. In Cairo we also have examples in the mosque of Qous
(12th century) of that fnely arranged geometrical interlacing of curves with foliage terminations
which distinguishes the Saracenic designer. Six panels in the Victoria and Albert Museum (13th
century), and work on the tomb of the Sultan Li Ghoury (16th century), show how deeply this
form of decoration was ingrained in the Arab nature. Figure work and animals were sometimes
introduced, in medieval fashion, as in the six panels just referred to, and at the Hospital Du Moristan
(13th century) and the mosque of El Nesfy Qeycoun (14th century). There is a magnifcent panel
on the door of Beyt-el-Emyr. This exquisite design is composed of vine leaves and, grapes of
conventional treatment in low relief. The Arab designer was fond of breaking up his paneling
in a way reminding one of a similar Jacobean custom. The main panel would be divided into a
number of hexagonal, triangular or other shapes, and each small space flled in with conventional
scroll work. Much of this simple fat design reminds one of that Byzantine method from which
the Elizabethan carvers were inspired.
