A Rubric Toolkit for Trade and Industrial Education Programs
"ubrics represent a set of guidelines for assessment of student achievement6 In Trade and
Industrial 7ducation/ teachers and students have many opportunities to embrace the application
of rubrics6 $ithin the four primary program components/ classrooms/ directed laboratories/
or%&based learning environments/ and leadership opportunities associated ith Trade and
Industry Student !rgani8ation 9S%ills+SA&:ICA; events/ rubrics can be used to provide
authentic assessments to supplement or replace traditional grading systems6
The true value of rubrics comes ith sharing beforehand ith students the scoring criteria and
tas%s or outcomes that they are e)pected to master6 Involving students in developing the scoring
criteria shares ith them the decision&ma%ing onership of rubrics and grading systems6 Student
pro<ects/ laboratory e)periences/ classroom performances/ <ournals/ and or%&based learning
activities are among the learning situations in hich rubrics may be useful in defining student
e)pectations/ determining student outcomes and successes/ and/ ultimately/ improving student
performance6
The folloing rubric tool%it contains suggested formats and criteria that teachers can use to meet
their local education agency grading standards6 For instance/ descriptive criteria are omitted for
the various levels in the folloing chart ith the intent that educators and students ill establish
their on descriptors6
