Challenge:
1. A square is divided into 4 rectangles of equal size, as shown. If the perimeter of each rectangle is 80
cm, what is the area of the square?
Answer: If n is one side of the rectangle, then 4n is the side of the square.
The perimeter of the rectangle is
2 x 4n 2 x n = 10n
10n = 80
n = 8
The area of the square is 8 x 8 = 64 square units.

2. The shape shown is made up of ten square pieces of paper without overlapping. The side of each
square paper is 8 cm long. What is the perimeter of the shape?
Answer: The ten square pieces of paper are arranged as follows.
The perimeter is 18 x 8 cm = 144 cm.
