As a part of my project I was supposed to identify the market potential and generate leads

I was also given an opportunity to visit Omnitech’s very own Disaster Recovery Center-
OMNICENTER during the course of my project. My project also involved tapping market
potential and identifying the potential customers for the upcoming Disaster Center at

METHODOLOGY APPLIED IN OMNITECH:
APDIMA – The Omnitech Way – (Assess Plan Design Implement Manage Audit)
For the purposes of Business Continuity Planning, the definition of a Disaster is:
Any incident that causes a serious disruption to a Business Unit’s working environment,
facilities and personnel which results in an inability to function or to provide service to
internal or external customers. And BCP means preparedness of an organisation to ensure
continuity/ resumption of critical business processes at an agreed level and limit the impact
of the disaster on people, processes and infrastructure.
Business continuity should be focused on entire business processes rather than solely on
specific assets such as IT systems
After incidents like 9/11, Tsunami and Mumbai Floods-people have understood in no
uncertain terms, the catastrophic consequences of disasters, either man made or natural.
However, to prevent losses from compounding, COs have to figure out ways and means of
keeping their core businesses intact in such situations. So, today if you go for any
compliance certification, one of the pre-requisites is the kind of disaster recovery measures
you have in place for your business. Disasters could be natural, in the form of earthquakes,
tornados, floods, etc or they could be manmade such as wars, militant attacks, accidents,
etc. Plus, there is one more category of disasters which occur frequently-biological
pandemics such as Bird Flu, Chicken Gunia, Plague, etc. Now all these disasters have
different characteristics and affect one or more of the four pillars of Business Continuity-
Workplace, Infrastructure, Data, and People And then comes DR and BCP Plan who saves
companies from so huge loss.
Actually A DR and BCP deployment is like a medical policy, where a person keep
investing certain amount of money, and he only see the benefits of the policy when he fall
ill. Otherwise, he don't see anything, except money going out of his pocket as premium. As
we don't mind spending money for our medical insurance and plan for future, we should do
the same for our core business. In a nut shell, a DR and BCP strategy is a medical insurance
for any business. Disaster Recovery is the activity that takes place during and after a
catastrophic event to minimize business interruption and return the organisation as quickly
as possible to a state of normalcy that existed prior to the event.
Business Continuity is the process of planning to ensure that an organisation can survive, by
providing an acceptable level of service throughout, an event that causes interruption to
normal business processes.
Many IT companies will go in for BCP/DR as their overseas clients insist on it. If they want
contracts they need to have a BC plan. Organizations dealing with essential services are also
going in for BCP—especially those that make a major impact in the market.
The attitude and mindset has got to change. People think they will not be affected by a
disaster, and hence they do not feel the need for a disaster recovery site or investment in
business continuity. Companies will do this only out of compulsion. If the choice is left to
them, few will take initiatives.
• 5 Steps to an Effective Disaster Recovery Strategy
The following five strategies can help enterprise IT organizations implement robust high- availability
and disaster strategies that maximize system availability for day-to-day operations.

OMNITECH DR METHODOLOGY
CALLENGES
The resulting damage could be both tangible and intangible. Tangible: Loss of assets.
Intangible: Loss of business, loss of credibility/image.
The second challenge is deciding how much to replicate. Then there are second level
decisions like how much time do you want for the switchover. The switchover time
definition is important because everything is going to cost you. All these decisions are
linked to your investment.
The other challenge is to give realistic requirements (for decisions like switchover time
definition), rather than just what one fancies.
The next challenge is to involve all groups in business continuity planning (BCP). The
technology will handle the switchover—but who is going to monitor the markets? It's your
people, so they must be part of this plan. Everyone has to own the BC plan.
The plan is made after consulting the entire organization. Complete BCP cannot be
achieved unless all user groups are involved, including top management.
The next challenge is handling change and maintaining the BC policy. You can create a BC
plan that will hold well in the beginning. But as time goes by, you upgrade infrastructure,
install new applications, and make changes in existing applications and configurations— so
the plan may not be comprehensive after six months. The challenge is to keep the backup
site in sync with the primary site—at all times.
