ZANE CLARK/The Sun
This Fourth of July, Hurricane Arthur may have threatened to rain on Eveshams parade, literally, but ultimately the bad weather held
off and things went on as planned. Motorcycles, dancers, floats, bands, fire engines and more paraded down Main Street to excitement
of the cheering crowd. For more photos, see page 13.
Happy Independence Day!
Welcome
home,
Robert!

The Sun
For most people, the Fourth of
July weekend involves barbecues,
parades and fireworks, but for
one soldier who recently re-
turned home from Afghanistan,
his weekend included a little
something extra.
On the morning of July 5, Unit-
ed States Army Sgt. Robert St.
John, a Tabernacle resident and
graduate of the Shawnee High
School class of 1996, was sur-
prised with an event in his honor
where hundreds of people filled
the stadium at his alma mater to
thank him for his military serv-
ice and cheer his return home as
if he were a rock star.
St. John was escorted to
Shawnee by The Warriors Watch
Riders, a troop support group of
motorcycle enthusiasts, and upon
his arrival, he was greeted by the
waving flags and blaring sirens
from hundreds of friends, family,
police, fire and rescue depart-
ments. Once inside the stadium,
he was presented with proclama-
tions from several local officials.
St. John said he was complete-

ly surprised by the event.
Totally blown away, would
have never expected this, would
have never expected to come back
to this high school, St John said.
The event was planned by the
Marlton-based charity Operation
Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey,
which in addition to planning
welcome home events also col-
lects donations for care packages
for the men and women serving
overseas in the armed forces.
St. John and those he served
with in Afghanistan had been re-
cipients of OYRSJ care packages,
and he thanked OYRSJ President
Dave Silver for everything the
group sent, which ended up being
so generous that it was more than
St. John and those he served with
could use.
Id rather have too much than
not enough, because there are
people out there that dont get
mail at all because theyre too far
away, St. John said. So what we
would do is we would take the
care packages that we got and we
would send them out there our-
selves. So I thank you all for the
donations. Nothing goes to waste
over there with us.
St. John also thanked the com-
munity and his family for their
support. In particular, he thanked
his wife Christine, who as an
OYRSJ member was a big part in
planning the event.
For a surprise of his own, St.
John stood in front of the crowd
and presented his wife with a cer-
tificate and coin honoring her for
displaying the finest qualities of
an army wife, such as loyalty, re-
spect, integrity and personal
courage.
Its just so cool, Christine
said. Hes so thoughtful and very
appreciative and Ive just been
blown away by all of it.
St. John had also surprised his
wife a few days earlier by not
telling her exactly when he was
leaving his base to come home.
I was sitting on the deck and
he came around the corner play-
ing our wedding song with a big
bouquet of flowers, Christine
said. It was awesome, but I got
him back.
Silver told St. John and his
wife that hes planned hundreds
of events with OYRSJ, but with
the two of them trying to surprise
the other, he had never been more
excited and stressed at the same
time.
I felt like a double agent talk-
ing out of both sides of my mouth
where I almost got conversations
mixed up, forgot who I was talk-
ing to, forgot what I said so I
just want to let you know that I
got a lot more gray hairs because
of the two of you, but its worth
it, Silver said.
St. John later once again
praised the work of OYRSJ, and
said he plans to be involved with
the group in the future.
I wish the word was out there
more, because I didnt even know
they existed until I was over there
and my wife got involved with
them theyre amazing, and Im
definitely going to become a
part, St. John said.

I
ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-to-
school advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school cover-
age in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were ask-
ing that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about the
new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2014-15 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can
pass along to you.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.
Ready for school?
Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now
Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcoming
school year. So whats on your mind?
Send us your questions, and well do our
best to get answers.
Hurricane Arthur threatened to spoil
our Independence Day celebration. Though
he tried his best, he did not live up to his
rainy expectations.
The Evesham Celebrations Foundation,
the township, our fire-rescue and our po-
lice department organized and ensured a
smoothly-run Independence Day celebra-
tion from the Mayors Cup 5k to the fire-
works at Cherokee High School.
In 2007, it was clear to me Evesham
Township was lacking the true sense of
community it has come to embrace seven
years later. There was no parade, and fire-
works were not on
July 4. There was
also no indication
from the previous
administration
these luxuries
would ever be part
of Eveshams fab-
ric.
With that in
mind, I co-founded
the Evesham Cele-
brations Founda-
tion with addition-
al influential community members, provid-
ing Evesham and the surrounding area
with exceptional events.
This year, the 5k, bike parade, Independ-
ence Day parade and the fireworks were
spectacular. I am proud to be the leader of
this town on such a memorable day.
I must take this time to thank our fear-
less ECF committee for carefully consider-
ing adjusting the times to run the day
smoothly. The day in its entirety was a hit.
Evesham was the only July 4 fireworks

weighing only eight pounds, is
the patriarch of a group of a
dozen or so cats that make their
home in a wooded area of town.
Local resident Denise Brown,
one of Brutus many fans, tells
the story.
Ive known him for three
years, Brown said. A vet tech
was taking care of the colony and
she told me he was 12 years old,
and other people when we were
back in the woods have told me
oh that cat has been there for
years.
Brown and others have named
Brutus the greeter of the group
because he is the one to always
run up to any visitors, looking for
anyone to scratch his head.
From word of mouth and peo-
ple just normally walking the
woods, the cats regularly attract
people coming to visit.
I cant believe all the people
that go visit them, Brown said.
Boys go back there on their
bikes, people drop their cars off
and go walk, its just funny all the
people that go back there just for
the cats.
However, with Brutus ad-
vanced age, Brown said another
woman and her husband who
sometimes visit Brutus had no-
ticed that the past few winters
had been rough on him, with Bru-
tus getting colds and infections
and his hearing starting to de-
cline.
With such harsh weather ex-
pected at the onset of this years
winter, the couple believed it was
finally time for Brutus to retire,
so they adopted him.
They took Brutus in for the
winter because hes been getting
sick a lotbefore the polar vortex
came she said let me take him
in, Brown said.
The couple took Brutus to their
home, about three-and-a-half
miles away from the woods,
where he could live out the rest of
his days in warmth and comfort.
They set up a large kennel with
a warm bed for Brutus and pro-
vided him with food and toys as
he became accustomed to the
other cats the couple already
owned.
Brown said Brutus new own-
ers reported back that he was
happy inside, and never even fol-

lowed the other cats outside
through a kitty-door during the
winter.
However, once the cold weather
broke and spring arrived, Brutus
was ready to start exploring the
outdoors once again.
It was one day in late March
when Brutus simply didnt re-
turn. The couple did everything
they could to find Brutus. They
checked shelters. They posted fly-
ers. They drove roads again and
again, stopping to check every re-
motely fuzzy animal that had met
its end.
The couple never found Bru-
tus, and as fate would have it, it
was on Friday, June 13 that the
wife of the couple finally told
Brown and a friend, yet another
fan of Brutus, that Brutus had
gone missing.
She said do you want to know
the truth? Well hes been missing
for a few weeks. So then we were
like, oh my god, and we were so
sad, she said.
Brown and her friend had reg-
ularly placed trail cameras near
the cats home to observe wildlife
in the area, but when they
checked the footage, there still
was no sign of Brutus.
However, when Browns friend
went to visit Brutus former
home in the woods just two days
later, she couldnt believe her
eyes. What did she find but Bru-
tus, right back where he had
started.
Upon checking the trail cam-
era footage once more, it showed
Brutus returning in the dark
hours of that very Sunday morn-
ing.
It took Brutus about 80 days,
but he eventually found his way
back to his friends.
We looked into it and 40,000
cars travel through the Route 70 -
Route 73 corridor on a daily
basis, Brown said. How did he
do that when hes kind of hard of
hearing and his smell isnt that
good? How did he eat? We dont
think he hunts. What was he
doing for food? What was he
doing for shelter? Its just truly
amazing.

Brutus, a 12-year-old tiger tabby cat, wandered three-and-a-half
miles of Marlton for nearly 80 days this spring to get back to his
friends. Brutus normally lives with a group of cats in a wooded area
of town, and although a couple tried to adopt him this winter at their
home, Brutus couldnt stay away from his fiends for too long.

This Fourth of July, Hurricane Arthur may
have threatened to rain on Eveshams parade,
literally, but ultimately the bad weather held
off and things went on as planned. Motorcy-

more paraded down Main Street to excite-
ment of the cheering crowd.

ticipant waves to the crowd; representatives
