Vice President, Programs

World Affairs Council of Oregon

This is a unique opportunity to put to use your management skills and interest in global issues to work
with Oregon's premier international affairs organization. The World Affairs Council of Oregon seeks a
creative, dynamic, professional to serve as its first Vice President for Programs. Successful candidates
will have a proven track record in programming noteworthy speakers and international visitors;
experience in developing new public and educational programs; demonstrated skill in managing people
and working effectively in a team setting, and a commitment to increased international understanding and
knowledge.

The World Affairs Council of Oregon, founded in 1950, is the oldest and largest non-partisan
international affairs organization in Oregon. The Council has been recognized as the "most dynamic
mid-sized Council in the US" by the 484,000-member World Affairs Councils of America. It has 8 full-
time employees, 2 part time staff and many volunteers. The Council has an annual budget of
approximately $1.2 million.

The Vice President will have responsibility for the Council's four main areas of program activity:

• Programs on World Affairs (3-6 public programs per month on international issues);
• the International Speakers Series (4 world-renowned speakers annually);
• the Global and Multi-Cultural Classroom (K-12 education program; 11,000+ kids served
annually); and
• the International Visitors Program (organizes short-term visits for 500 emerging leaders from
over 100 countries each year, as well as 3-5 week internships for visitors from the former Soviet
Bloc).

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's degree in relevant discipline (Bachelor's degree in combination with qualifying
experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree). Study, travel or work in other
countries and experience with other cultures highly desirable.

Work Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in related field,
including managing individuals and leading teams, is required.

Other Skills: A robust knowledge of the most significant recent and historical players in international
affairs as well as knowledge and understanding of current events and issues is required. Also required:
superb written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to prioritize and work well under
pressure; personal initiative and strong work ethic; computer proficiency. Occasional irregular hours,
including evenings and weekends, are also required. Good humor is essential.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Program Vice President is responsible for all Council Programs. S/he is responsible for
programming all public events, including the International Speakers Series, Headline Fora, and Great
Decisions; and for organizing other public programs (cultural events, social gatherings, etc.) that advance
the mission of the Council. S/he supervises the Director of the International Visitor and Training
programs and the Director of K-12 Education. With the VP for Development and Administration and the
Finance Manager, s/he comprises the President's senior management team and reports to the President.

Functions and Tasks:


1. Manage the International Speakers Series
a. With Board, President and others, determine themes and identify speakers. Negotiate fees and contract
details.
b. Work with President and Communications Manager to develop a marketing plan for the Series; plan
print and other media advertising, create promotional campaigns, organize publicity, press releases, etc.
Coordinate community outreach.
c. Oversee event management: coordinate the ISS event team to develop and implement plans for lectures
and ancillary activities (receptions, press conferences, hotel arrangements, transport, etc.)
d. Assist VP Admin and Development and President in developing sponsorship opportunities and
securing other funding for the Series.
e. Manage ISS finances: Maintain program on budget with revenue targets as set by President and Board.
Maintain ongoing statistical data on the Series.

2. Manage the Headline Fora


a. Program one to two speakers monthly for HF, booking two the three months in advance; select
speakers for timeliness of topic, subject expertise and public interest.
b. Oversee interns and admin staff to manage all event details, including speaker logistics, venue
booking, videotaping, etc.
c. Send out press releases, coordinate outreach efforts. Work with interns and volunteers to publicize
events, oversee and contribute to the writing of newsletter and other promotional copy, web content, etc.
d. Prepare and oversee a HF budget that covers costs direct costs of events and generates revenue.

3. Oversee Great Decisions


a. Identify and solicit speakers as per GD topics
b. Work with PSU coordinator volunteers and admin staff to ensure events run smoothly
c. Explore possibilities to expand membership participation in GD, including but not limited to video
hook- ups, on line, and post lecture discussions. Organize and expand outreach to Great Decisions
groups statewide, as well as to school districts.
d. Oversee intern or admin staff to distribute GD books to groups and schools.

4. Develop other public programs


a. Coordinate programming with Young Professionals liaison
b. Work with Membership and Development staff to develop and oversee events for WAC members and
guests that entertain and enlighten - plays, concerts, food/wine tasting, etc.
c. Explore the feasibility of setting up a "breaking news" series using local college, university and
member expertise.
d. With VP for Admin and Development, develop relationships and collaborate with other organizations,
groups and businesses with complementary interests.

5. Supervise the Directors of K-12 Education and International Visitor and Training Programs
a. Provide supervision and guidance regarding annual planning and budgeting, program implementation,
funding, et al.
b. Ensure program quality and staff productivity; balance work loads
c. Promote cross-department programming and cooperation
d. Conduct annual evaluation

6. Perform other tasks as directed by the President
