TEKS
110.34 12A; 110.34 2A, 2B, and 2C

Objective(s)
The student will recognize how messages
presented in visual media can reflect social and
cultural views in ways both different and
similar to traditional texts. The student will
also be able to compare and contrast the
similarities in the novel Alices Adventures in
Wonderland with its modern film version; and
relate the characters, setting, and theme of the
selected work to the historical and social ideas
of its time.

2. Big Understanding(s)
-Students use comprehension skills to analyze
how dialogue, images, character development,
and plot work together in various forms to
impact meaning; in other words, students will
be able to take their abilities to analyze a work
of literature and apply the same concept to Tim
Burtons modern take on Alice in Wonderland.
-Students analyze, make inferences, and draw
conclusions about themes and genre with
Lewis Carrolls Alices Adventures in
Wonderland.
-Students will also provide evidence on how
the Victorian ideals are portrayed and
challenged in both versions of Alices story.
3. Assessment Evidence
-Opening hook activity will help me assess every students way of thinking, see if theyre getting
in the right mindset for reading movies.
-Homework for 1
st
night: Reflect on a Disney movie of your choice. Write a one page reflection
detailing at least two different thematic elements Disney uses to adapt a story to appeal to
audiences. In your reflection, keep the influences of the time period in which it was made in
mind.
-Each students success of the objective will be based on his or her logical reasoning and
evidence to support an answer; the student will have been able to use literary analysis techniques
to support his or her arguments regarding the movies different elements.
Formative: Short quizzes, informal questioning from teacher, reflections from students, class
discussion on findings
Summative: Essay test on movie; Written test on novel

4. Opening Hook
-Media Literacy Activity: On a scale of realistic to unrealistic, where does your movie fall and
why? This will be done in pairs and then analyzed as a class. Hopefully, students will begin
noticing how elements like characterization and plot are found in both movies and text.
- Do you think the movie would be easier to understand and analyze? Then, students would
voice their answers and reasoning to this question. They should see that the tools they have
previously used to analyze books are similar to the tools used to analyze a film.
-I would ask what types of elements are the same in a movie as they are in a book.
-Now segue to focusing specifically on both the film and book of Alices Adventures in
Wonderland, and how the students will be able to use analysis tools to analyze both works.

5. Instructional Strategies/Activities

Input
-Media Literacy Activity, mini lecture from me, class discussion, Alice movie, Alice novel,
selected pages from the textbook.

Modeling
-We will watch a clip from a Disneys The Little Mermaid, the Part of Your World scene, and
will discuss the elements, as well as how realistic or unrealistic it can be. I will demonstrate what
I am looking for in their homework for the night.
Guided Practice
-I will praise what the students have noticed, prompt for the significance of what they have
noticed, and then leave the students to analyze this significance.
Check for Understanding
-I will check for questions, and reiterate how the students will use the techniques to analyze
literature and apply them to analyzing the movie. We can go over a few more examples if
necessary.
