The 2014 Festival includes a fantastic lineup of 70 films from 18 countries and eight world premieres. This year we
have some exciting firsts. We are extending our Castro run to 10 days (yes, two weekends!) of powerful and moving
cinematic experiences. Join us for our Opening Night Bash at the magnificent Contemporary Jewish Museum, and raise
a glass at our festive Closing Night Reception on the mezzanine of the glorious Castro Theatre.
Our signature summer film festival showcases independent film while catalyzing discussions, challenging
expectations and expanding notions of Jewish identity and culture. This year is no exception. Our lineup reflects
the full diversity of Jewish experiences from Argentina to the Philippines and spotlights new works by talented
emerging filmmakers of screens both large and small as well as legendary icons of our cinematic past.
We open and close with mystery and suspense! Join us Opening Night for The Green Prince, the Sundance opener
and winner of the audience award for world documentary. This nail-biting account of the relationship between a
Palestinian informant and the Israeli agent who was his handler for over 10 years will have you on the edge of your
seat. On Closing Night, we celebrate the first feature by an emerging young talent with the world premiere of Little
White Lie, Lacey Schwartzs search for truth as she uncovers an intimate family secret.
This year, we bring you not one but two Centerpiece films. Our Centerpiece Narrative, Run Boy Run, is the gripping
story of a young boy who is determined to outlast the Nazi occupation, directed by Oscar winner Pepe Danquart
of Germany. Our Centerpiece Documentary Watchers of the Sky, winner of Sundance awards for editing and
animation, takes us on a provocative journey from Nuremberg to The Hague, from Bosnia to Darfur, in one mans
quest to create a future free from genocide.
Come laugh together during this years spotlight on comedy. Weve got all types: romantic, absurdist, stand-up and
dark. The spotlight includes a screening of Quality Balls, which charts comedian David Steinbergs ground breaking
career. Military veterans use stand-up to tackle their disabilities in Comedy Warriors, which features Lewis Black
and Zach Galifianakis followed by live stand-up by real-life comedy warrior Joe Kashnow. Catch Zero Motivation,
winner of best narrative feature at Tribeca, an absurdist Israeli comedy about female soldiers of the Israeli Defense
Forces in a one-time-only Castro screening.
Think global, watch local. Bay Area filmmakers and SFJFF alumni make a splash at this years festival. See the
world premiere of Marcia Jarmel and Ken Schneiders Havana Curveball and Judy Montell and Emmy Scharlatts
In The Image. Other local films include Abbie Ginzbergs Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs And The New South Africa and
Nancy Katess Regarding Susan Sontag. Doug Block (51 Birch Street) returns with 112 Weddings, and Roberta
Grossman (Hava Nagila: The Movie) comes back to SFJFF with producer Nancy Spielberg to present the world
premiere of Above and Beyond.
Special events include the presentation of the Freedom of Expression Award to Theodore Bikel, and the world
premiere of Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholem Aleichem, a film about the Yiddish stories of shtetl life interpreted
by the man who played Tevye the Milkman over 2,000 times, followed by a special live musical performance by
Bikel, the worlds foremost interpreter of the Jewish folk song who also happens to have a star on the Hollywood
walk of fame. And finally, drink and schmooze with Amy York Rubin, the producer/director of the hilarious new
web series Little Horribles, the story of a self-indulgent queer woman navigating life and love. The series has been
called the lesbian answer to Girls by the Huffington Post, and Sarah Silverman has called it her new fave web
series.
See you at the movies!

The Green Prince is such an extraordinary story that one is tempted
to think it is fiction, if only somebody had the audacity to invent it.
A Palestinian in Ramallah, Mosab Hassan Yousef grows up angry and ready
to fight Israel. Arrested for smuggling guns at the age of 17, hes interrogated
by the Shin Bet, Israels security service, and sent to prison. But shocked
by Hamass ruthless tactics in the prison and the organizations escalating
campaign of suicide bombings outside, Mosab agrees to spy for Israel. For
him, there is no greater shame. For his Shin Bet handler, Gonen, there is no
greater prize: operating the oldest son of a founding member of Hamas.
Based on Yousefs memoir, Son of Hamas, The Green Prince is a story of
two men, spy and handler, whom history insists must be adversaries. That
they could reach a point of trust or friendship seems absurd. Embroidering a
tangled web of intrigue, terror, and betrayal, Nadav Schirman builds superb
tension throughout a surprisingly emotional journey. Ultimately, The Green
Prince is less about political struggle than personal coming-to-terms with
responsibility and moral duty. John Nein, Sundance Film Festival Catalogue

Daring to ask questions about her true identity, around which her parents
had kept a careful silence through her entire childhood, filmmaker Lacey
Schwartz gently but firmly pulls back the curtain on matters of race
and family secrets in her deeply personal and fascinating documentary.
Growing up unselfconsciously Jewish and Caucasian in the leafy, largely
white town of Woodstock, New York, Lacey and her extended family
cheerfully explained away her tawny complexion by pointing to a picture of
her fathers swarthy Sicilian Jewish grandfather. But her parents fraying
marriage and her own nagging doubts compelled the bright Georgetown
undergraduate to begin tugging at the threads of her identity, fearlessly
documenting the unraveling of family mysteries. Little White Lie manages
to be both a particular familys story of the price of living in denial, but
also raises larger questions for us all: What factorsrace, religion, family,
upbringingmake us who we are? And what happens when we are forced
to redefine ourselves? Director Lacey Schwartz in person in San Francisco

Making a film about the persistent scourge of genocide in our time might
seem like a deeply depressing undertaking, but in Watchers of the
Sky, MacArthur Awardwinning documentarian Edet Belzberg creates
an illuminating and visually eloquent journey into this darkest corner of
human depravity, using as a framework the extraordinary life of a nearly
forgotten Polish Jewish lawyer and human rights advocate: Raphael
Lemkin (19001959). As a young student, Lemkin had been appalled by the
impunity that greeted the mass murder of Armenians by Ottoman Turks.
Why is the killing of a million, he wrote, a lesser crime than the killing
of an individual? He set about his lifes task of creating an international
legal framework for preventing and prosecuting such barbarity (the
word he used until he came up with a new term, genocide) in 1944, by
which time his family had already become victims of the Nazis form of the
practice. The documentary skillfully interweaves Lemkins story, exquisitely
rendering imagery and prose into evocative animations, with profiles of four
contemporary human rights advocates at the International Criminal Court
and the United Nations, including US Ambassador Samantha Power, whose
Pulitzer Prizewinning A Problem from Hell helped inspire this exceptional
and moving film. Peter L. Stein

Srulik is running for his life. Literally. The eight-year-old Jewish boy flees
the Nazis on foot as they hunt him and other Jews who have sought refuge
in the forests of wartime Poland. His once happy family is now dead or
dispersed, and to survive Srulik has to forage for food in the woods and
sleep on the forest floor. Calling himself Jurek, he pretends to be a gentile
who has been orphaned by the war. With this ruse he is welcomed into the
homes of peasants and farmers to share a simple family meal and claim
a spot in the barn or by the hearth. Run Boy Run, based on a true story,
is a rare Holocaust narrative told exclusively through the eyes of a child. It
chronicles Sruliks remarkable efforts to evade capture, ward off starvation
and honor his fathers desperate plea to survive at all costs but to never
forget that he is a Jew. In the process, the film raises important questions
regarding faith, identity and the source of the blind prejudice that turns so
easily into dehumanizing hate. Run Boy Run is a remarkable testament to
the human will to survive against all odds. Mark Valentine

Freedom of Expression Award:

Theodore Bikel:
In the Shoes of Sholem Aleichem
WORLD PREMIERE
USA, 2014, 90 mins, English
Director: John Lollos
Editor: Allison Shurman
Cinematographer: James Fideler
Screenwriter: Marsha Lebby
Cast: Theodore Bikel
CASTRO THURSDAY, JULY 31 6: 15PM
Sponsored by Moses and Susan Libitzky
The stories of two beloved Jewish icons are woven together in this
enchanting documentary: Sholem Aleichem, the great Jewish storyteller,
and this years SFJFF Freedom of Expression award recipient, Theodore
Bikel- troubadour, actor and one of the most popular stage interpreters of
Aleichems work. The prose of Aleichem (18591916) portrays like no one
else the true soul of the tragicomic Jewish shtetl life. Fiddler on the Roof,
the Broadway and Hollywood musical adaptation of Aleichems Tevye the
Milkman short stories, has immortalized him. Theodore Bikel, now 90, has
portrayed Tevye on the American stage countless times. Vienna-born Bikels
family escaped Austria after the Nazi occupation and migrated to Palestine
before settling in the United States. He originated the role of Captain von
Trapp in The Sound of Music, played Zoltan Karpathy in the film version of
My Fair Lady, guest-starred in numerous TV series from The Twilight Zone
to Law & Order and has served as the president of Actors Equity. Bikel has
performed and recorded collections of folk songs in 23 languages, including
Yiddish. The films highlights include interviews with Alan Alda, Fyvush Finkel
and Sholem Aleichems 102-year-old granddaughter Bel Kaufman. This is an
enchanting film filled with laughter, tears and tunes about Aleichem and one
of his best Tevyes (Bikel). Donny Inbar
Screening followed by award ceremony, a brief performance and Q&A with Theodore Bikel.

If you are an aficianado of smoked fish and you live in New York City, then
you are most likely aware of Russ & Daughters. If not, you may become one
after seeing this delightful and delectable documentary. This venerable
establishment has been selling fish since 1914 and is celebrating its 100th
anniversary. Anchoring the film is 100-year-old Hattie Russ Gold and 92-year-
old Anne Russ Federman, the daughters of the stores name and the sturgeon
queens of the title. These two live wires reflect on the immigrant experience
and their lives behind the counter. The playful banter between them is quite
endearing. Well-known enthusiasts of the store are interviewed (with their
favorite fish highlighted). They include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, chef Mario Batali, New Yorker writer
Calvin Trillin, and 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer. In a creative and
innovative manner, filmmaker Julie Cohen also brings together six colorful
longtime fans of the store, in their 80s and 90s, who sit around a table of
fish reading the narration script in the style of a Passover seder. Regardless
how you enter the screening, after seeing this humorous, heartfelt and
mouthwatering film, you will certainly leave with an appetite. Jay Rosenblatt

Five disabled Iraq/Afghanistan veterans bring their painful life-altering
experiences onstage, transforming personal tragedy into brutal and fiercely
funny stand-up gold, mentored by some of the most talented comedy
performers and writers in show business. Burn victim Bobby (Ive been
extinguished for years). Henline, amputees Rob Jones, Stephen Rice, Joe
Krashnow and a very pregnant former helicopter pilot with a debilitating
back injury, Darisse Smith, learn the fine art of joke telling and timing from
mirth masters Bob Saget, Zach Galifanakis and Lewis Black. With only
a short time to rehearse, the five are flown from all around the U.S. out
to Hollywood for a one night stand at the Punch Line, the legendary Los
Angeles club where Richard Pryor got his start. The crash course prep,
with the pros guiding the raw comedy recruits through a raucous and
occasionally raunchy run-through of material (Saget to amputee Krashnow:
You have a leg up on a lot of people right now because youre Jewish.)
is one of the docs hilarious high points. The climatic live show finds the
comedy warriors not only comprehending the healing and highly addictive
power of humor but quite suddenly discovering that their lives are about to
take a very unexpected direction. Thomas Logoreci

A fiercely non-believing, war-weary soldier sells his place in Heaven
to a lowly army cook for a plate of scrambled eggs. With this fable-like
incident at its heart, A Place in Heaven, the latest captivating drama from
the assured writer/director of Restoration (SFJFF 2012), charts how the
unholy bargain resonates through four decades in the life of the Israeli
soldier, a Zionist war hero (and possibly war criminal) ironically nicknamed
Bambi, played brilliantly by Alon Aboutboul, whose craggy face and steely
demeanor conceal worlds of inner pain and stoic resolve. Seeking an
earthly legacy through a son, Bambi is foiled (perhaps cursed?) at every
turn, and even when a son materializes, he sets himself on a collision
course with his father by turning devoutly religious. While always staying
rooted in the particular lives and loves of Bambis complex family, the film
unabashedly asks epicno, Biblicalquestions: Are the sins of the father
inevitably visited on the son? What makes a good man in the first place?
Who really deserves a place in Heaven? Director Madmonis allegorical
tale, beautifully supported by grand cinematography and a haunting
score, is one of those miraculous dramas that, rather than delivering a
tidy message, forces you to wrestle with the ideas it raises long after the
credits have rolled. Peter L. Stein

Yoav Shamir as an unapologetic provocateur.
Michael Moore executive produced the
filmmakers newest film, a globetrotting quest

individuals. From a bonobo preserve in Congo to
the suburban home of a Flemish woman whose
family harbored Jews during WWII, Shamir takes
viewers on a fascinating journey that is sure to

Buenos Aires, 1994. Ahmed, a committed Muslim
martyr, works as a successful young surgeon. But
his destiny, when the inevitable day arrives, is to
carry out an attack for radical Islam. Meanwhile,
David, a cold-blooded Mossad agent, awaits the
opportunity to exact some very personal revenge.
This pulse-pounding thriller pits two determined
men against each other in the aftermath of the
deadly real-life bombings in Buenos Aries against
the Jewish community. TL 32

Borders are artificial constructs,
and yet the movement across
them and confinement within
them are part of the human
experience. Borders can define
the geographic boundaries of
sovereign states or they can
be internal, personal. Some are
open, unguarded; others are fully
controlled. These films navigate
the complexities of separation,
migration and integration,
artfully constructed stories of
crossing borders in search of
another, to uncover a secret, to
reveal a truth.

In this poignant comedy, an Israeli father and son
are forced to confront their painful estrangement
over their beliefs. The aging father is an atheist,
his middle-aged son a Hasidic rapper. Thrown
together on a road trip to Greece, they argue their
way along the Adriatic, treating viewers to some
stunning scenery. As their quixotic adventure
unfolds, it is the actors understated performances

All Year Long with SFJFF
More than just a summer film festival, SFJFF brings the best in Jewish film to the Bay Area and beyond all year long.
We partner with other organizations on dozens of co-presentations at festivals and events, create access to our ever-
increasing catalogue of films through SFJFF Online, and support year-round programs that create opportunities for
communities to come together and showcase the groundbreaking, thought-provoking and visionary work of international
and national filmmakers.
Highlights of the year include screenings of Bethlehem, the Israeli entry for the Oscar, Inside Llewyn Davis by the Coen
Brothers, Obvious Child starring Jenny Slate, The Congress, Ari Folmans animated feature from Cannes Directors Fortnight
starring Robin Wright and Harvey Keitel, and the prize winning Polish film Ida.
SFJFF Filmmaker Residency
Extending from our mission to support independent
filmmakers working with Jewish themes, our SFJFF
Filmmaker Residency supports the work of an emerging
filmmaker each year through the Ninth Street Independent
Film Centers Media Arts Incubator
Program with funding provided
by the San Francisco Film
Commission.
David Sanatamaria is SFJFFs
Filmmaker in Residence.
SFJFF Online
With over 1.6 million views, join our
global audiences and visit SFJFF
Online. Search our archive of
expertly curated Jewish film, watch
Jewish short films for free and get an in-depth and behind-
the-scenes view of filmmakers and films on our blog. Our
newly expanded collection features 50 short films including
audience favorites from our online program and some
exciting new releases.
The New Jewish
Filmmaking Project
The New Jewish
Filmmaking Project,
produced by Citizen Film,
is a year-round program
of the San Francisco
Jewish Film Festival. Since 2002, more than 300 young
storytellers, ages 15-25 have worked with the NJFP to create
sophisticated, authentically personal documentary projects,
viewed by some 300,000 people to date. This year, Citizen
Film, Columbias Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies,
SFJFF and our New Jewish Filmmaking Project proudly
co-present a selection of innovative web-based multimedia
productions created on college campuses across the country.
Year Round Exhibitions
SFJFF Winter Fest We couldnt wait a whole year for the next
major showcase of films. In 2014, SFJFF inaugurated our
daylong Winter Fest, bringing all-new, critically acclaimed
films to the historic Vogue Theater in San Francisco.
SFJFF Families @ The New Parkway Eat, drink, film! January
through June, SFJFF Families @ The New Parkway
screens on the fourth Sunday each month at the New
Parkway Theater in Oakland.
SFJFF @JCCSF One-offs in the Fall and Spring. Exhibitions
at the JCCSF feature cutting edge television and food and
film pairings.
SFJFF @ Osher Marin: Best of the Fest We took the best of the
33rd SFJFF and brought it back for North Bay audiences
at this inaugural mini-series -- showcasing the best of
SFJFF and bringing special guests to each screening.
Look forward an expanded menu of offerings in 2015!
SFJFF @ The Magnes The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art
and Life at UC Berkeley teams up with SFJFF for special
events on the first Thursday of each month from October
to May. Bringing festival favorites, exciting new works,
and noted scholars, filmmakers and artists together for
screenings followed by lively discussions.
Mitzvah Series With generous support from the Bernard
Osher Jewish Philanthropy Foundation, SFJFFs Mitzvah
Series takes our festival programming into Bay Area senior
centers and nursing homes, where we show films at no
charge to residents who do not otherwise have access to
independent Jewish-themed films and discussions.
