3. a) Draw stress strain diagram for ductile materials and explain the following
terms:
Proportional limit, Yield point, Upper yield point, Ultimate tensile
strength, Elastic point, Elastic and Plastic zone.

b) A bar of 25 mm diameter is tested in tension. It is observed that when a load
of 60 kN is applied, the extension measured over a guage length of 200 mm is
0.12 mm and contraction in diameter is 0.0045 mm. Find Poissons ratio and
elastic constants E, G, K.

4. a) Calculate the moment of inertia of the shaded area as shown in Fig 2 given
below about the centroidal x0 and y0 axis.

5. a) What are different types of supports used in case of beams? Explain with neat
diagrams.

supported beam as given in fig 3.

6. a) Draw a free body diagram of ladder resting on a rough surface and against 6
rough wall. Identify unknowns in the problem and write the equations of
equilibrium.
b) Knowing that the coefficient of static friction between the 20-kg block and the
incline is 0.30, determine the smallest value of for which the block is in
equilibrium.
