An 8.5 x 11 offset color brochure designed
using my own images.
Programs:

Date:

Emily Kunz
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded
document.
Create an original company logo and
use it in a brochure.
Incorporate at least 4 quality images.
One should be clipped in Photoshop
and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text
follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy
with at least three paragraphs, headers,
and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex
(two-sided) color.
Process:
After deciding what type of brochure I
wanted to make, I started by choosing
the pictures I would use and designing my
color scheme based on those pictures. The
color scheme ended up consisting of mostly
warm fall colors. After I had chosen the color
scheme, I went to work designing the logo.
I decided to go with something simple. In
Illustrator, I used the pen tool to outline our heads
and added a stroke and removed the fll. I used
Rockwell for the font, and changed the kerning
of the word Life so it would align with the edges
of the word Cleaver.
After fnishing the logo, I moved into Photoshop
and did some basic adjustments on the photos I
chose. I adjusted the levels, vibrance, sharpness,
and selective colors where needed. I did a clean
selection of two of them to use for text wrapping
in the brochure. I did this using the quick selection
tool and the refne edge option.
Next I moved into In design and began
designing. I started with the placement of
elements on the front and back of the brochure,
and then moved to the inside. I used the color
strips and boxes to create unity and rhythm
through repetition.

A full-bleed 8.5 x 11 photodesign project in order to demonstrate my photography and image
editing skills to potential employers. It includes my own image, a consistent color scheme based on
my image, text, and design elements.

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into
the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-
destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.
Process:
First, I chose my color scheme and decided what my message/audience was going to be. Once
I decided on those things, I gathered everything Id need for my photo, set it up, and took some
shots with the camera on my Samsung Galaxy S3 (8mp). Next I uploaded the images to my PC
and chose the one that I thought was the best. I then took that image into Photoshop and made
adjustments to the Vibrance/Saturation, Levels, Color Selection, and Sharpness. I also adjusted
the cropping. Once I fnished my photo-editing, I moved the image to a new 8.511 Photoshop
document and got to work designing my poster. I used blocks of color behind the text for repetition
and to integrate my color scheme as well as make my key words stand out. I also used typography
to emphasize key words in the quote.
Description:
A business card to help market myself as a designer and illustrator.
Programs:
Adobe Illustrator
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 section 10
Emily Kunz
Objectives:
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to ft a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are
okay on business card and letterhead as additional design elements.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use periods,
bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process:
First, I sketched out some ideas in my sketchbook. I fnd that when I start my designs on paper,
they come out a lot better digitally. Once I had a basic idea of what I wanted to do, I moved into
Illustrator and began placing shapes and text. Once I fgured out which fonts I wanted to use, it
was much easier to manipulate the design as a whole when I converted the text into shapes and
grouped items together.
The frst thing I did was design my logo and choose my color scheme. My logo evolved quite a bit
throughout the entire design process, but it helped to have the basic shapes in place frst. I wanted
to keep the business card fairly simple, with just my logo and my purpose. Once this was fnished, I
began placing items for the back of the business card. My biggest challenge was achieving good
alignment. I had to strategically place and size many elements to get them to align well.

I used the same starting process for the
business card as I did for my letterhead. I
started with the logo, and then got to work on
the letterhead design after.
I discovered that it was diffcult to make the
letterhead match the business cards, so I ended
up changing some elements to make them
more appealing on the letterhead, and then
going back to my business cards and making the
same adjustments there. The watermark on my
letterhead it set at 10%.

A webpage to showcase a logo I designed
for April Cleaver Art & Design.

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a
.png for a web page so the long side is
300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of
creating your logo and how it appeals
to a target audience. (Minimum of
200 words. Include rationale for colors,
appeal to target audience, design skills,
etc,)
Design a web page using HTML to display
the logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML
and CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design. (Find
and use hex colors in Photoshop to
match your logo)
Compress multiple fles in a zipped folder
to attach as one fle.
Open your HTML page in a web browser,
and capture a quality screen shot with .5
inch margins for printing.
Process:
I used DreamWeaver and Text Wrangler to
edit my HTML and CSS code. First I wrote up my
HTML fle, added my logo and any necessary links,
and validated it (I used Photoshop and Illustrator
to resize my logo for the web and get the correct
RGB colors). After that, I linked a CSS template to
my HTML page and changed several elements so
that my webpage would refect a similar design to
my logo.
I used the eye dropper tool to match the exact
colors of my logo and then I incorporated them
into the design of my webpage. I also used the
fonts from my logo (Century Gothic and Bell MT) for
my webpage. I foated my image to the left so that
there would be some text to the right of it to make
the webpage more balanced. I also increased the
size of the padding and the margins on some of the
elements so that things wouldnt be so crowded.
For my headers, I opted to use a white font and a
colored background. I really like the effect that this
has against my logo.

Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to ft a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
Process:
First I sat down with my sketchbook and thought about what company or person I wanted to
design for, and then got to work drawing up some sketches. Once I had a basic idea of what I
was doing, I went to the computer and gathered some images from my sister-in-laws Instagram
account to use as references. I ended up using a picture of a dumbbell for the frst logo. I moved
the photo into Illustrator and traced it with the pen tool and gave it a pink fll. For the second logo, I
used the shape tool and drew in a square, then copied and pasted it until I had three. Then I typed
out the words and converted them to shapes via the create outlines command in Illustrator. Then
I ungrouped them and adjusted them with the selection tool and the shift key. I used the same
process for the fnal logo.

Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and fow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a flter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images
Process:
First I decided what I wanted my message to be. I wanted to use my favorite scripture for this
poster, so once I realized that I searched the internet for images that could accurately depict that
message.
Once I had my images, I cropped the background, and then editing the levels, vibrance, sharpness,
and selective colors. Then I used a mask to blend the seagull picture in with the ocean picture, and
lowered the opacity a bit. I also added a noise reduction flter to give it softer edges.
After that, I copied and pasted the scripture from LDS.org and edited the typography. Then I used
the eyedropper tool to pick up colors from the images to create matching background boxes for
the scripture, and then I lowered the opacity to give them a more layered effect.

Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including
Photoshop.
Process:
The frst thing I did was scan an image I found in the May 2014 edition of the Ensign. Then I chose
a monochromatic color scheme based on this scanned image. Next, I used the image and the
color scheme to design a full color ad in Microsoft Word. I used several blocks of color at different
opacities to create unity and repetition. I chose a slab serif font for the title and company name
to contrast the sans serif font I chose for the body text and details. I added a white border to the
image using the frame tool in Word to make it a little more unifed.

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic fier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign
intact.
Process:
First I read the project guidelines, then I sketched out some ideas. Once I had my sketches done, I
used those to guide my layout in InDesign. I used the grey boxes and line for contrast and fow. The
picture I used had a white background at the top, so it was diffcult to align it with my text. Once I
added the light grey border, it was much easier to align. In my body copy, I used bold , italics, and
paragraph rules to break up the monotony. The dotted lines of my paragraph rules help add unity to
the design through repetition.
