Bylaws of the Samford University Student Chapter of
the American Choral Directors Association
ARTICLE I TIME AND PLACE OF MEETINGS The time and place of meetings of the Samford University Student Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association shall be decided by the chapter president only after consultation with, and upon approval of, the chapters officers and faculty advisor. The time and place of the meetings of this chapter of the American Choral Directors Association shall be specified in a previous meeting, or by means of appropriate communication.
ARTICLE II QUORUM A quorum of this organization shall be constituted by at least one half of the active membership. No action may be taken which is binding upon the membership unless a quorum is present. However, certain matters such as a discussion of means of taking in new members, the presentation of a program, etc. may be carried on at a regular or special meeting without a quorum being present.
ARTICLE III STANDARDS OF MEMBERSHIP As laid down in the National Constitution and, in all cases, must be approved by the faculty advisor of the local chapter. Membership in the chapter is evaluated biannually. Each member shall acclaim his membership class at the beginning of each semester. Active members have voting privileges and will be allowed to participate in workshops, education programs, travel to conferences with the chapter, and receive scholarships from the chapter. Inactive members do not have voting privileges or access to any of the aforementioned benefits. Active membership is defined as: maintaining national membership status by paying required national dues and chapter dues. If these requirements have not been met then the member will be listed as inactive. A student so dropped from active membership status may be reinstated provided he meets the financial obligations of the National Organization.
ARTICLE IV NATIONAL DUES AND CHAPTER DUES Specific National dues shall be paid by the individual members of the local chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. Chapter Dues are required of all members. They will be collected by the second meeting of the chapter in each semester. The dues shall be $10 for the semester.
ARTICLE V HAZING POLICIES Hazing is a criminal offense in the state of Alabama. No student is permitted to haze another. See below for the Samford definition. Definition: The use of physical violence or any activity calculated to impose embarrassment, harassment, physical, emotional or mental strain; or any activity that would in any way jeopardize the physical, moral or scholastic well-being of any individual; mentally antagonizing a student, guest or employee or placing someone under threat of physical harm.
ARTICLE VI OFFICER ELECTIONS AND TERMS The offices of this chapter of the American Choral Directors Association are President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Caroling Chair, and Conference Chair. These officers, with exception of the Caroling Chair, shall serve term lasting one full, academic year. The Caroling Chair serves only for the Fall Semester. Elections will be held at the final meeting of the academic year. Those elected will assume the responsibilities of their office beginning on June 1 st of that year. Elections shall occur as following: at the final meeting of the academic year, active members shall be nominated for specific offices prior to the meeting in which voting will occur. For each office, those nominated will present a short explanation of why they believe they are a good fit for their nominated office, and then leave the room while those present discuss. The secretary will then call a vote by collecting ballots for each round of voting. After the vote has been tallied and the new officer has been determined, the nominees may be brought back into the room. The same procedure shall be repeated for each officer. In case of a tie between two, a new vote will be taken between those two nominees. If there is still a tie, the matter will be discussed and re-voted on until a majority vote is gained.
ARTICLE VII AMENDING THE BY-LAWS The By-Laws of this chapter of the American Choral Directors Association may be amended by a majority vote of the active membership, provided such proposed amendment is placed before the chapter at a previous meeting.
