Stop the Fighting in the Middle East!
A Call for a Cease-Fire and a Resumption of Negotiations

Global Majority an international network of conflict resolution activists, trainers, and
mediators calls for intensive international efforts to broker an immediate cease-fire to stop
the loss of lives, property damage, and psychological anxiety that is being caused to civilians
on both sides of the fighting between Israel and Hamas. The number of casualties among
Gazan civilians is atrocious and we appeal to the warring parties to uphold international
humanitarian law.

An immediate end to the indiscriminate firing of rockets by Hamas into Israel and Israeli
retaliation should be followed by the resumption of a diplomatic process between the Israeli
government headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the PLO headed by
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

There can be no military solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. We recognize a history of
principled dialogue among proponents of peace between both parties. We believe that the
models of peace achieved in South Africa and Northern Ireland, among others, demonstrate
that the path to peace is through negotiation and dialogue.

We salute American Secretary of State John Kerry for his efforts to try to facilitate progress in
Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, and call on him to present the American framework principles
for an Israeli-Palestinian agreement which draws heavily on the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative
(API) to the two leaderships once the cease-fire is achieved. (An important tool, the API
declares that all 22 Arab states are ready to recognize Israel and have normal relations with it,
based on an end to the occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West
Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, alongside the State of Israel, and a just and agreed upon
solution to the refugee problem. The API has the backing of all 57 Muslim member states of
the Organization of Islamic Cooperation).

A solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is possible by refocusing efforts towards a two-
State solution as the only viable route to peace in the Middle East. As the United Nations is
calling for, a durable path to political, security, institutional and socio-economic progress that
stabilizes Gaza is needed. This includes an end to weapons smuggling, the full opening of the
crossings and bringing Gaza back under one legitimate Palestinian government.

We call on all Israelis, Palestinians, and members of the international community to Give
Israeli-Palestinian Peace a Chance!
