Waste Classification
The airport waste collection may be divided into four different types:
- Solid urban waste
- Special and similar waste
- Hazardous and non hazardous special waste (as classified by
the Italian law)
- Food waste.
Waste
SEA is responsible for the waste management at Linate and Malpensa airports.
Waste at the airport is generated by different kind of activities such as
offices, aircraft cleaning, trades and catering: They are comparable to those produced inside cities and
towns.

Special Similar waste; generated by aircraft
cleaning at Malpensa Terminal 2 and by service
activities. This kind of waste is still managed
separately from the urban one although as provided
by local territorial authorities.
Solid urban waste:
generated by cleaning operations in all terminals,
auxiliary buildings and related areas, aircraft cleaning included
except that from Malpensa Terminal 2
This kind of waste is collected in appropriate equipments
(bins and containers), located within the airports premises.
Hazardous and non hazardous special goods:
as established by the Italian official decree,
special waste is produced by airport maintenance
and service activities: it is divided into hazardous
waste (for instance: exhausted oil, oily emulsions,
nickel cadmium batteries, lead based batteries, oil
and diesel filters, sanitary waste, fluorescent lights,
motor oil cans) and non hazardous waste (for
instance: ferrous scrap, expired medicines, alkaline
batteries).
Food Waste: aircraft passengers meals.
This kind of waste is handled and disposed by the
catering companies operating at both Linate
and Malpensa airports

Waste management
In compliance with the current law provisions
SEA implemented a waste management
system which is principally based on waste
movement activities within the airport area.
At Malpensa Terminal 1 and 2 there is an
internal service for waste collection.
The airport waste is moved to a dedicated
area where it is temporary stored in special
bins/containers and directly delivered to a
third company for its disposal .
At Linate airport the disposal of solid urban
waste produced in offices, canteens, terminal
and air side is carried out by a contractor
which has been charged on behalf of the local
territorial authority.
These graphs indicate the weight percentage
of the total waste amount divided into 4 main
types.

Separate Waste Collection
SEA has made great effort to develop a transparent waste management system and reduce the amount of waste
disposal.
In both Linate and Malpensa airports a separate collection is made for recycling materials, such as paper, wood, glass,
ferrous scrap and copper.
Paper
At Malpensa and Linate airports all trade operators keep this
kind of waste collection separeted.
Glass: At Linate and Malpensa Terminal 2 there are
special containers for this type of waste.
Ferrous scraps
Ferrous scraps are collected and stored in special
containers located in a dedicated area.
Wood: it is stored to be recycled in
dedicated containers located in the
central collection area.
At Malpensa airport since 2004
wooden pallets have been recycled
and given to Cargo Handlers for air
freight stocking.
At Linate airport wood is collected in a
special platform.

Ecological collection area
At both Malpensa and Linate airports two
new areas for ecological collection have
been planned.
At Linate the new infrastructure has
already been implemented and approved
by the local territorial authorities.
This ecological area has a surface of
3.550 square meters and is properly
equipped in order to handle both solid
urban waste and hazardous/non
hazardous waste.
Referring to Malpensa airport, the
planning of the new ecological area has
already been accomplished and SEA is
being waiting to receive all the required
authorizations for its building.
