1947 drowning
victims to be
honored
Warren - At 10 a.m.
on Saturday, July 26, at
the entrance to the
Warren-Alvarado-Oslo
High School gymnasi-
um, two benches and a
planter will be present-
ed to WAO School in
memory of three young
Warren men who lost
their lives in June 1947.
The items will be
given in memory of
Bruce Fulks, L. Deane
Fulks and Donald
Novak. They were on an
FFA charter near Morris
Point, Lake of the
Woods, when tragedy
struck. In a boat to go
fishing, they left the
Oggren Resort about an
hour before the remain-
ing nine in the group.
Though there were
no witnesses, it has been
said that there was a
great deal of driftwood
floating in the lake due
to a terrible storm. It is
suspected that their ves-
sel struck a large piece
of driftwood, which
caused one of the men to
fall overboard. Recovery
attempts led the boat to
capsize.
All three lost their
lives and were eventual-
ly recovered. Bruce
Fulks, 27, was an agri-
culture teacher at
Warren High School.
His 19-year-old brother,
Deane, was a family
farmer in Warren.

student who lived in

Council says
complaint
unfounded

After a closed meeting
Tuesday night, the Thief
River Falls City Council
upheld the findings related
to a complaint against Police
Chief Kim Murphy.
The council voted 5 to 1 to
uphold City Administrator
Larry Kruses findings and
the Ad Hoc Labor
Committees findings.
Council Member Rachel
Prudhomme voted in opposi-
tion. Council Member Glen
Kajewski abstained. Council
Member Jerald Brown was
absent from the meeting.
After the meeting,
Prudhomme declined to
comment. Council Member
Glen Kajewski said
Wednesday that he consid-
ers Murphy to be a friend.
Murphys attorney, Ken
Kohler, said he couldnt com-
ment on the outcome.
In May, it came to light
that many members of the
Thief River Falls Police
Department issued a vote of
no confidence in Murphys
abilities as police chief. That
vote was delivered in
January and came to light
after an interview by Mayor
Jim Dagg on the radio pro-
gram River Currents.
Murphy announced his
retirement Feb. 18 and is
scheduled to retire Oct. 3.
The Parks and
Recreation/Public Safety
Committee is scheduled to
meet Monday, July 21 with
its consultant regarding the
hiring process.
In separate earlier inter-
views, Dagg and Kruse told
the Northern Watch that the
matter is a personnel matter
and is confidential. Kruse
referred to the vote as a com-
plaint, saying that his office
researched the complaint
and found the allegations
were unsubstantiated. The
Ad Hoc Labor Committee
arrived at the same conclu-
sion. The council resolution
upholds those decisions,
which had been appealed to
the council by someone other
than Murphy. This marked
the end of the appeals
process.
The resolution came an
hour and 40 minutes after
the council closed its
Beekeeper Gary Lane helped a swarm of bees migrate into a beehive box outside of Aric
and Crista Attigs home in Thief River Falls. A swarm of bees congregated onto the Attigs
mailbox Thursday, July 17 and later moved onto the lawn. Police were dispatched to the
scene. Dispatch also called Lane to remove the bees. Lane said a worker bee typically finds
a suitable location. Other bees follow. They like to hang onto objects. Lane expected to
remove the box after dark since he didnt know the location of the queen.

The Olson farm in
Hickory Township will offi-
cially be recognized as a
Century Farm this weekend
at the Pennington County
Fair. A ceremony has been
scheduled for 1 p.m. at the
Bus Garage following the
Fashion Review and 4-H
Awards Program on Sunday,
July 20.
John Olson was born in
Norway in 1869. He came to
the United States with his
wife Gunvor (Tveitbakk) and
son Ole in 1892, and settled
near Fisher. The Olson fami-
ly moved to Garnes
Township, Red Lake County,
in 1901 because the area
near Fisher wasnt wet
enough for trapping. In
1904, they moved again ...
this time to Section 7 in
Hickory Township, Red Lake
County, where they home-
steaded.
John and Gunvor had 10
children, Ole, Halvor, Tom,
Annie, Arne, Henry, Ben,
Johnnie, Emma and Olaf.
Both of John and Gunvors
daughters and two sons, Ben
and Arne, married and left
the family farm. The
remaining six brothers
stayed on the farm and
Olson Bros. Farm was the
farms name for many years.
The six Olsons farmed
alongside their father until
his death in 1940. Gunvor
died in 1954.

of one pageant and the first
of another. The 65th
anniversary Miss Thief
River Falls Pageant and
inaugural Miss Riverfest
Pageant were held Tuesday,
July 15 at the Lincoln High
School Auditorium.
Brittany Johnson, Thief
River Falls, was crowned the
65th Miss Thief River Falls
following Tuesday nights
scholarship pageant. In
addition to the Miss Thief
River Falls crown and sash,
Johnson will receive a
$1,000 scholarship, an
Artistry Makeup gift pack-
age, crown pin, competing
entry into the Miss
Minnesota 2015 competi-
tion, and a one-semester
tuition waiver at Northland
Community & Technical
College.
Johnsons platform is
Save a Limb, Save a Life
Vascular Disease. For the
talent competition, she per-
formed a figure skating rou-
tine while wearing roller
blades in place of traditional
ice skates. Johnson is cur-
rently attending NCTC East
Grand Forks, where she will
obtain her associates degree
in surgical technology while
also pursuing a degree as a
registered nurse. Her long-
term goal is to work in the
operating rooms of the
Childrens Hospital in
Minneapolis.
Also competing in the
Miss Thief River Falls pag-
eant were first runner-up
Ashley Jobe, Thief River
Falls, Umalee Holecek, Thief
River Falls, and Reese
Vedbraaten, Thief River
Joyce Kron, 91, has had
many once-in-a-lifetime
opportunities. Now, she can
add another one to her list.

A former Thief River Falls
man pled guilty Tuesday,
July 15 in Kittson County
District Court to soliciting a
sheriff s deputy posing as a
teenage girl online.

to three
f e l o n y
charges as
part of a
plea agree-
ment. Those charges are
soliciting a child/someone
believed to be a child
through electronic communi-
cation to engage in sexual
conduct, engaging in elec-
tronic communication relat-
ing or describing sexual con-
duct with a child, and dis-
tributing via electronic com-
munication material that
relates/describes sexual con-
duct to a child. Sentencing
has been set for Tuesday,
Oct. 7.
According to the com-
plaint, Johnson responded to
an ad on Craigslist placed by
a Kittson County sheriff s
deputy posing as a 15-year-
old girl named Breanna. In
part, the Aug. 5 ad read that
the girl was new to the area
and was lookin to do pretty
much anything.
Johnson allegedly
responded to the ad and
steered the conversation
toward discussions of sexual
conduct and sexual contact.
While corresponding with
him, the deputy identified
himself as a 15-year-old girl.
The graphic, sexual conver-
sations continued with
Johnson attempting to
engage in a sexual relation-
ship with the girl.
The correspondence con-
tinued through Thursday,
Jan. 30. Toward the end of
the correspondence, he told
the girl that he was sending
her a gift. The package was
sent to a post office box in
Hallock and contained items
related to sexual acts.
On Jan. 30, the deputy
and Chief Deputy Steve
Porter interviewed Johnson
outside of the Dairy Queen
in Thief River Falls.
Johnson owns the business.
The complaint indicated
that he asked to speak with
an attorney after being read
the Miranda warning. Two
search warrants were
served, including one on his
home and one on Dairy
Queen. Johnson allegedly
responded that he knew that
he did something wrong
from the beginning.
Johnson also asked to tell
his employees what was
occurring. A deputy accom-
panied him since he was
under arrest. Once inside,
Johnson spoke with the
manager. In front of the
deputy, he allegedly said he
sexually harassed a young
girl in Hallock which turned
out to be a police officer. He
also admitted to making
inappropriate sexual refer-
ences and sending her a toy.

Police Officer Vern Wittenberg snapped this photo of a
swarm of bees, which congregated Thursday, July 17 on
the mailbox and grass outside of Aric and Crista Attigs
home in Thief River Falls. While Aric was at practice, he
received a phone call from his neighbor Orley Gunderson.
Orley left a message, stating bees were around Arics mail-
box. Aric thought there were five or six bees and expected
to spray them once he got home. Then Orley called back,
stating the swarm was growing. Police were called, and
beekeeper Gary Lane removed them from the premises.

Turning up the heat
If weather forecasters are correct,
and well give them the benefit of a coin
toss, the heat is about to be turned
back on. When the heat gets turned on
outside, you can bet well hear about it.
Unfortunately, well hear more about
children and pets being left in vehicles,
too.
According to WebMD, there have
already been deaths of children in cars
this year. More than 500 children have
died in hot cars since 1998, according
to the nonprofit organization, Kids and
Cars.
Childrens bodies overheat more eas-
ily than adults. They absorb more heat
on a hot day and dont have the same
sweating ability as adults. That can
raise their body temperature to dan-
gerous and even fatal levels, according
to the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration.
Dont brush off the warnings as non-
sense. It could happen to you. It hap-
pens to people who say that it couldnt
happen to them all the time.
The results of a recent survey, pub-
lished on the SafeKids.org website
stated that:
14 percent of parents have
intentionally left their children in a
parked car.
11 percent of parents admit to
forgetting their child in a car.
Nearly one in four parents of a
child younger than 3 has forgotten the
child in a car.
Dads are nearly three times
more likely than moms to leave a child
in a parked car.
Not all deaths were caused because
people forgot. Some parents believe
cracking the window will make the car
cool enough.
How do we prevent these deaths
from happening? Experts have a lot to
say about it, but so do some non-
experts.
Putting something on the back seat
as a reminder isn't a new idea. Safety
groups have been pushing it for years
telling people to put something you will
need when you reach your destination.
You may not have your laptop or purse
with you, but you always have a shoe,
so one suggestion is to put your left
shoe in the back seat when you put
your kid in the back.
Eleven-year-old Andrew Pelham of
Nashville won second place in the
Rubber Band Contest for Young
Inventors by inventing a device that
reminds parents children are still in
the car. The device, which is basically a
strap or rubberband that stretches
from the back seat to the front and
attaches to the driver's side door,
reminds drivers of the child in the
back.
Another group wants car seat manu-
facturers and automakers to develop
and implement technology to detect
children forgotten in car seats.
Automakers say cost, technology, lia-
bility and privacy issues prevent them
from developing a system.
Theres still no foolproof way today to
prevent overheating deaths or of
devices that warn us of the possibility
before it happens. The risk is yours,
and if you mess up, the cost is pretty
high.

Friday, July 18 as the 2014
Pennington County
Outstanding Seniors.
I think its a great honor.
I certainly didnt give it any
thought, Joyce said.
However, she tried to con-
vince Glenice Johnson that
she didnt qualify for the
honor.
Joyce qualified, and
Glenice nominated her any-
way. Glenice noted Joyce is a
great example of an older
woman who continues to vol-
unteer despite any limita-
tions that she may face.
Over the years, Joyce has
volunteered with a variety of
groups. It becomes a way of
life because you enjoy it, its
doing good, she said.
Joyce has volunteered at
the Thief River Falls United
Methodist Church,
Northwest Dairy Day and
the Marshall County
Historical Society. She also
volunteered with the now-
defunct Viking Town and
Country Garden Club.
Glenice said Joyce still finds
the time to attend the
Pennington County Master
Gardeners workshop each
year in an effort to learn
something new. Step outside
Joyces apartment and its
apparent she knows a few
things about gardening.
Joyce continues to volun-
teer with the Rosewood
Homemakers. She recalled
learning about such newfan-
gled things as pressure cook-
ers and microwaves, and
then teaching others about
such machines. The latest
lesson she taught was on
gluten-free food.
Teaching has been a part
of Joyces life for many
years. She taught in one-
room, rural schools in
Pennington and Marshall
counties. After the youngest
of her four children began
attending grade school,
Joyce renewed her teaching
certification at Northland
College. Joyce then taught
as a substitute teacher at
Viking Elementary School
until her late husband, Bert,
retired. Their family now
includes six grandchildren
and four great-grandchil-
dren.

Dale couldnt believe it
when he learned about the
honor. He said other people
were more worthy of it.
Thats not to say that hes
unhappy about the award.
Soon after learning about
the award, he called his sib-
lings to tell them about the
award. Other family mem-
bers now tease him about
being royalty. He takes the
teasing in stride, smiling
about the honor.
Dale received the award
for his volunteerism. Hes
just a very, very active 80-
year-old, said his daughter-
in-law Krista Svendsgaard,
who nominated him for the
award. She is married to
Dales son, Kyle. Dale and
his late wife, Janice, have
three other kids Lydell,
Twyla and Krystal
(deceased) and six grand-
children.
Dale volunteers with the
Goodridge Lions Club and
the Pennington County Fair
Board. As part of Winterfest,
Dale has also shaved his
hair into a mohawk the past
two years to raise money for
the Pennington County
Relay For Life. Each year, he
has raised $300 or more.
Dale has also been known
to donate homemade minia-
ture barns for fundraisers.
He has even purchased and
eaten anchovies in order to
have a small container that
could double as an animals
trough for a miniature barn.
In case anyone is wondering,
Dale probably wont be eat-
ing anchovies anytime soon.
Hes not a fan.
Dales volunteerism took
root during his time in the
Mavie 4-H Club. He joined
the club at the age of 8. He
showed livestock and pigs at
the fair. As time went on,
Dale served as the auction-
eer at a club basket social.
Boys had the opportunity to
bid on a prepared lunch bas-
ket and eat it with the girl
who made the basket. An
auctioning career soon blos-
somed.
Besides working as an
auctioneer in adulthood,
Dale also worked as a bus
driver chauffeuring stu-
dents to and from school,
visitors to and from places of
interest, and the public to
wherever they needed to go.
Dale technically retired
from auctioneering in the
late 1980s. However, he con-
tinues to volunteer his time
as an auctioneer for volun-
teer causes. Among the caus-
es are the Pennington
County Fair 4-H Livestock
Auction, the Goodridge
Lions Club Smelt Fry, the
Goodridge Lion Tamers Pie
Auction, the Goodridge Area
Fire and Rescue fundraiser,
Winterfest and a Healthcare
Heroes Relay For Life Team
fundraiser.
As Dale put it, he likes
auctioneering and its hard
to quit.

Three watershed district
members of the Red River
Watershed Management
Board participated in a
panel discussion about what
local watersheds are doing
to meet basin-wide goals for
flood damage reduction in
the Red River Valley. The
panel was part of the Third
Annual Minnesota Ag Water
Issues Forum held at the
Jim Kukowski Farm in
Strathcona on Wednesday,
July 16.
The panel included Tracy
Halstensgard of the Roseau
River Watershed District,
Dan Money of the Two
Rivers Watershed District,
and Nick Drees of the
Mi ddl e- Snake- Tamarac
Rivers Watershed District.
They reviewed water man-
agement projects in their
districts, explained how
local flood damage reduction
projects are developed and
implemented, and encour-
aged landowners to get
involved in water issues and
participate in the project
team process. The panel also
answered questions about
retention, tiling and ditch
systems.
John Finney, president of
the Red River Watershed
Management Board, provid-
ed a history of flood damage
reduction efforts in the
Valley and explained the
role water retention plays in
achieving the 20 percent
flow reduction goal for the
Red River Basin.
Don Baloun, state conser-
vationist with the Natural
Resources Conservation
Service, reviewed what has
been accomplished through
NRCS funding and said
there is no silver bullet for
flood damage reduction. He
discussed retention, wet-
lands mitigation banks, con-
servation partnerships,
funding for drain tile control
structures and other compo-
nents of the new Farm Bill.
The forum was sponsored
by the Minnesota Farm
Bureau Federation and
Northwest Minnesota
County Farm Bureaus, the
Minnesota Agricultural
Water Resource Center, the
Minnesota Association of
Wheat Growers, Red River
Valley Sugar Beet Growers,
Minnesota Corn Growers
Association and the MN
Soybean Growers
Association.

Celebrating a century
The Olson Century Farm/Continued
continued to acquire farm
land and the farm grew close
to 4,000 acres at one point.
For a while, all six brothers
lived and worked from the
original farm site. That
began to change in 1925,
when the Olsons purchased
the Duane Wojnarowski
farm.
Ole, Tom, Henry and Olaf
stayed at the original home-
stead, while Halvor and
Johnnie moved to the
Wojnarowski site. In the
1950s, Tom and Henry
moved to the Wojnarowski
site and they were joined by
Ole in the 1960s.
Each brother had his
own house at the other site,
but they still ate together
each night, said Janice
Olson, daughter-in-law of
Olaf Olson.
Interesting group of peo-
ple, said Myles Olson,
Olaf s oldest son. Some
things you dont want to put
in print. They could be fight-
ing all day but theyd eat
together each night.
Of the six brothers who
continued working on the
family farm, Olaf was the
only one who married. Olaf
married Alverra Brumwell
in 1946 and they remained
at the original homestead,
where Olaf built a house
next to the house where he
was born.
He actually died within a
hundred feet of where he
was born, Myles said.
The six Olson brothers
were all farmers and trap-
pers. During the winter
months, some of the broth-
ers would go east to
Northome or Kelliher to
work in logging camps.
Others would stay home to
continue trapping and care
for the cattle or other live-
stock.
The Olsons had both
dairy and beef operations
over the years, with a couple
hundred head of cattle; and
they even had a sheep herd
at one point. The family got
out of beef farming in the
1960s. They continued to
grow crops until Olaf s
retirement from farming in
the 1970s.
Since Olaf s retirement,
the farmland has either
been enrolled in the
Conservation Reserve
Program or rented out.
Following Olaf s death in
1999, the Olson farm was
split into two properties,
with Wayne and Myles.
Over the past century,
farms like the Olson farm
have seen a lot of changes.
One of the biggest was the
size of the typical farm fam-
ily. Myles noted that it was
common for families to have
around 10 children because
of the amount of manual
labor required. As farms
became more mechanized,
the size of the typical farm
family grew smaller.
As the oldest son, it
seemed like once you were
old enough to walk, you were
behind the wheel of a trac-
tor, Myles joked.
When Myles got out of the
military, he already knew he
wasnt going to make farm-
ing his career. But he still
planned to have a hobby
farm. He wanted to plant a
potato patch and tried two
or three plows before finding
one that worked well enough
to break ground. Then he
tried to disc his freshly
turned soil, which was also a
battle.
Everything was broken,
Myles said, adding that his
father and his uncles would
buy a piece of equipment
and use it until it was com-
pletely shot. At one point, I
counted 13 different Model
As sitting behind a barn.
They kept everything for
parts.
Janice said she and her
husband continue to operate
a small hobby farm. What
we have out there now is
hobby equipment thats
much larger than anything
they ever had.
Myles said he has no
intentions of selling the
farm. It will stay in the fam-
ily and eventually go to
fourth generation owners
and children of Myles and
Janice, Sara and Erick.

Murphy and his attorney
met with the council for
about 10 minutes of the
closed meeting.
In June, issues with the
Law Enforcement Center
evidence storage vault came
to light during a Parks and
Recreation/Public Safety
Committee meeting. At that
time, the Northern Watch
and Thief River Falls Radio
obtained documents pertain-
ing to problems with secur-
ing evidence at the LEC.
In September 2013, Kruse
sent a letter of reprimand to
Police Chief Kim Murphy
for failing to properly moni-
tor three firearms, which
had gone missing. Two have
since been found.
In an earlier interview
with the Northern Watch,
Murphy said the third
weapon remains missing
and continues to be part of
an ongoing investigation
spearheaded by Deputy
Police Chief Craig Mattson.
As part of the reprimand,
Kruse wrote that Murphy
shouldnt have removed the
guns from the locked evi-
dence vault to his unlocked
closet that could be accessed
by anyone. Kruse indicated
that it was believed the guns
were moved to make room in
the evidence storage vault.
An inventory of the vault
had been conducted earlier.
According to the letter of
reprimand, Sgt. Doug
Williams found six weapons
had been confiscated as part
of a felony case and were
now missing. Two were
located in a closet locker in
Murphys office. Another
gun was found in an unspec-
ified location. Murphy later
told the Northern Watch
that two other weapons have
been returned to their right-
ful owner.
Two other firearms had
been confiscated following
suicides. One was found in
Murphys closet locker. The
other had been there at one
time but was later moved to
the trunk of the unmarked
administrative squad car.
According to the reprimand,
Murphy said he took the gun
out of the trunk and then
brought it back to the LEC,
where he placed it into the
closet locker. He said the
family gave the gun to law
enforcement for animal con-
trol purposes.
As part of the reprimand,
Kruse also directed Murphy
to develop procedures
regarding stale evidence.
He went on to note that the
evidence vault has been a
concern for a long time and a
lot of the older evidence pre-
ceded Murphys time on the
force. He wrote that efforts
were already under way to
improve the procedure.
In a June interview with
the Northern Watch,
Murphy said the depart-
ment is continually review-
ing the evidence vault and
the departments procedure
pertaining to securing evi-
dence. He said the depart-
ment is also working on get-
ting the proper training for
handling the evidence vault.

The comments published in this column are intended to

Summer hotdish
Ive said my columns are
sometimes well-planned
meals and sometimes hasti-
ly-prepared hotdish. I hope
you like hotdish.
First off, the benefit for
my brother, Steve Nelson,
went great. The benefit was
held last Sunday at Viking
School. I have attended sev-
eral epic intramural basket-
ball clashes between the
Viking Trotters and the
Newfolden Dragons at this
same elementary gymnasi-
um, and attendance for
these matches would not
even come close to the num-
ber who came to support
Steve. Small towns may be
small in size, but they are
massive in heart. I think one
incredible fact of the benefit
is that fully one-third of the
Class of 1975 came to sup-
port one of their own. My
unofficial estimate is that
we served sloppy joes to
approximately 550 people.
We are so thankful to those
who gave support to this
benefit; words fall short.
The second item I plan to
throw into the mix is a
recent purchase. I walked
into Quality Farm Supply
the other day and was
offered a new cattle gadget. I
like gadgets, but can usually
resist them but not when
you justify the gadget with
application to cattle. Then,
my resistance is futile. The
Vetgun is basically a paint-
ball gun that shoots extra-
large balls of insecticide at
your cattle. The insecticide
lasts about three to six
weeks and leaves a colored
dot to show which animals
are protected. It delivers the
insecticide ball at fairly slow
speed so as not to hurt the
animal from a distance of 15
to 30 feet. I think most cattle
people hate handling their
animals because it is stress-
ful for everyone - even if you
have a good corral. With the
Vetgun, I can just wander
amongst the cattle and
deliver three to six weeks of
fly resistance. Plus, lets be
honest about this, its kind of
fun.
I have spent the last sev-
eral years working toward a
goal of comfort for my cattle.
Comfortable cattle are more
productive, but I would want
them comfortable whether it
makes money or not. This
week, my efforts should
really pay off. A few years
back, we installed a water
delivery system that pro-
vides cold water at a mini-
mal walking distance. Last
winter, I built portable
shade structures so that our
cattle could stay on pasture
during the summers heat,
yet stay comfortable. Our
use of fly predators has
greatly reduced horn flies
and my hope is that the use
of my Vetgun will be a fur-
ther reduction in the insects
that bother cattle. As sum-
mer returns with heat and
humidity, you might feel it is
just plain hot. I hope that I
will bask in the warmth of
happy cows and a plan that
has truly worked out.
My words were pretty
simple fare this week; I like
to keep my columns easy to
digest in this heat. Theyll
probably go down a little
easier than those corn dogs
and jalapeno poppers from
the fair.

A one-hour introductory
session for the Depression
and Anxiety Recovery
Program will be held

Open Arms Christian
Fellowship, 401 St. Paul

Interested persons are invit-

gram consists of eight week-
ly meetings. A team of
health care professionals
will serve as local hosts for
the program.

pants how to improve brain
function, maximize IQ in
children, increase energy,
boost concentration, engage
in healthy sleep habits,
improve physical perform-
ance, and gain renewed
hope. In addition to essen-
tial information on lifestyle
and diet, Nedley will also
cover the benefits of counsel-
ing and the benefits and
risks of medications.

Anxiety Recovery Program

depression and those wish-

Boes named Marshall
County Emerging Leaders
Darby and Amanda Boe
have been chosen as the
Marshall County represen-
tatives to the Red River
Valley Emerging Leadership
Program.
The Boes, along with par-
ticipants from 18 other
counties in the northwest
and west central Minnesota,
will attend four education
sessions between November
2014 and April 2015. They
will be challenged to come
back to their community to
continue their positive role
as leaders in this region.
Darby and Amanda reside
near Warren with their two
daughters. Darby is a vice
president at Bremer Bank in
Warren and Amanda is the
clinical informatics lead at
North Valley Health Center
in Warren.
The RRVELP was devel-
oped in 1985 by a small
group of people who felt
there was a need to help
individuals develop their
leadership potential. The
program was founded on the
idea that effective leader-
ship can be learned and
those leaders grow into posi-
tion of leadership, motivated
by a sense of responsibility
for themselves and their
communities.

Q: How many watercraft
inspectors does the DNR
hire to check for invasive
species?
A: Our goal is to hire 100
Level 1 watercraft inspec-
tors and 46 Level 2 water-
craft inspectors each season.
Level 2 inspectors not only
inspect boats and equip-
ment for aquatic invasive
species, but can decontami-
nate watercraft using hot
high-pressure washers.
DNR watercraft inspectors
will work at more than 250
public water access sites
this season.
The DNR also partners
with local units of govern-
ment so that they can hire
their own watercraft inspec-
tors. So far this season, we
have trained more than 300
of these local inspectors.

Atmel Corporation is a worldwide leader in
the design and manufacture of microcon-
trollers, capacitive touch solutions,
advanced logic, mixed-signal, nonvolatile
memory and radio frequency components.
On Tuesday, July 15, the Atmel Tech on
Tour truck visited Digi-Key Corporation in
Thief River Falls. Digi-Key sells Atmel prod-
ucts. The semi that rolled into Thief River
Falls converts into a training room in about
three hours. It can function as a mobile
training center, a showroom, conference
center, tradeshow booth, entertainment
center, recruitment platform, executive
meeting site and tech support/training cen-
ter. About 300 Digi-Key employees toured
the moveable training room, and 30 partici-
pated in technology training. This particular
vehicle will make 150 stops, cover 50,000
miles, visit 30 U.S. states and reach about
4,000 engineers in a year.

on Tour trailer on Tuesday, July 15. Atmel
Corporation is a worldwide leader in the
design and manufacture of microcon-
memory and radio frequency (RF) compo-
nents. Digi-Key sells Atmel products. In an
effort to educate engineers and sales serv-
ice personnel on Atmel products, the cor-
poration created this moveable classroom.
During a years time, it is expected to make
150 stops, cover 50,000 miles, stop in 30
U.S. states and reach about 4,000 engi-
neers. About 300 Digi-Key employees were
expected to tour the classroom. About 30
or so participated in training.

Steve Hall and Shotgun Red to appear at fair
One of RFDTVs most
popular shows is coming to
the Marshall County Fair on
Friday, July 25 at 6 p.m.
Shotgun Red is a puppet
best known as a co-host for
the television talk show
Nashville Now, which
aired from 1983-93 on The
Nashville Network. Often
appearing alongside the
shows host, Ralph Emery,
Shotgun Red was voiced by
Steve Hall, a native of
Brainerd.
The puppet, best recog-
nized for his large gray mus-
tache and straw cowboy hat,
was discovered by Hall in a
Minnesota hobby shop in
1980. Hall first used
Shotgun Red as the emcee
for his band at the time,
Southbound 76. After trav-
eling to Nashville to compete
in the final round of The
Seagram's 7 Battle of the
Bands Contest, Hall and
Shotgun "crashed" Ralph
Emery's local morning TV
show. Ralph fell in love with
the little puppet and later
made him his co-host on
Nashville Now. The puppet
remains a part of Steve
Hall's Shotgun Red Band,
which operates out of the
Nashville Nightlife Dinner
Theater and tours periodi-
cally.
The Shotgun Red Variety
Show airs on RFDTV each
week on Thursdays at 4 p.m.
and Sundays at 12 p.m.

year, the Roseau County
Historical Society project to
repair the Pinecreek Log
Church at the Roseau
Pioneer Farm has become
much more expensive than
expected. Work will not con-
tinue until more money can
be raised.
The goal is to honor the
first Pinecreek pioneers by
restoring the building, as
close as possible to its origi-
nal appearance, so it can be
enjoyed by their descen-
dants and future genera-
tions. The first settlers of
Pinewood included Lars
(Lewis) C. Rugland, Arne
Knutson, Ole Kompelien,
Anders Lund and Nels
Besserud.
Donations can be dropped
off at the Roseau County
Museum in the City Center
Building, or mailed to 121
Center St. E. #101, Roseau,
MN 56751. Please make a
note stating that your dona-
tion is to go to the Pinecreek
Log Church Fund.
When the building is
again weathertight, organiz-

Is it time to have some of
these fresh veggies from our
local growers? Must be,
because this recipe sounds
really good to me. Seems to
me the stores have some
nice veggies now too:
3 cups fresh broccoli florets
3 cups fresh cauliflower (flo-
rets)
3 celery ribs, sliced
1 small onion, chopped
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
3 tablespoons butter or
margarine
3 tablespoons flour
2-1/3 cups whole milk
1 pound Velveeta-type
cheese, cubed
In large saucepan, com-
bine broccoli, cauliflower,
celery, onion, water, and cel-
ery salt. Bring to a boil,
reduce heat, cover and sim-
mer 12-15 minutes, until
veggies are tender.
Meanwhile, in small
saucepan, melt butter. Stir
in flour until smooth.
Gradually stir in milk, bring
to a boil, cook and stir for 2
minutes or until thickened.
Reduce heat and add cheese.
Cook and stir until cheese is
melted. Drain vegetables
and add cheese sauce and

ated crusty French loaf
3/4 to 1 cup shredded moz-
zarella cheese
3/4 to 1 cup shredded ched-
dar
1/4/ pound each of thinly
sliced deli salami and
ham
1/4 cup chopped roasted red
peppers or 1 jar (2
ounces) pimentos,
drained
1 tablespoon butter, melted
2 to 3 tablespoons shredded
Parmesan cheese
Unroll dough and pat into
14x12 inch rectangle.
Sprinkle with mozzarella
and cheddar cheeses to with-
in 1/2 inch of edges. Top with
meat and peppers. Roll up
jelly roll style, starting with
a short side. Seal seam and
tuck ends under.
Place seam side down on
ungreased baking sheet. (I
would use the nonstick
parchment or nonstick foil.)
Brush with butter and
sprinkle with Parmesan
cheese. Bake at 375 degrees
for 25-30 minutes or until
golden. Let cool to touch and
then slice with serrated
knife.

3/4 cup whipping cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups fresh raspberries or
strawberries
In bowl, whisk the sour
cream and brown sugar. Stir
in ice cream. Refrigerate. In
chilled mixing bowl, beat
whipping cream until it
begins to thicken. Add sugar
and vanilla. Beat until stiff
peaks form and sugar is dis-
solved. Fold in sour cream
mixture and berries. Pour
into serving dishes. Serve
immediately or refrigerate.

cream
1 can (16 ounces) refried
beans
1 can (4 ounces) chopped
green chilies or jalapenos
1 envelope fiesta ranch dip
mix
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded
Mexican cheese blend or

Sliced ripe olives,
chopped tomatoes, sliced
green onions and shredded
lettuce (as desired)
Tortilla Chips
In shallow 1-1/2 quart,
micro safe dish, combine
sour cream, beans, chilies
and dip mix. Stir in 1 cup
cheese. Cover and
microwave on high for 3
minutes. Stir, rotate dish 1/4
turn, cover and microwave 2
minutes longer or until
heated through. Sprinkle
with remaining cheese. Top
with olives, tomatoes, onions
and lettuce, as desired.
Serve with tortilla
chips. Makes 5 cups.

Prairie Community Services held its annual employee
recognition luncheon at Seven Clans Casino on Friday, July

operates group homes for developmentally disabled indi-
viduals. PCS has five group homes in Thief River Falls and

cated individuals in the area.

Gary Lane, a beekeeper, showed a frame containing many
of the bees that congregated outside of Aric and Crista
Attigs home in Thief River Falls. Police were called to the
Attigs home Thursday, July 17 after the swarm congregat-
ed on the mailbox and lawn. Lane was then dispatched to
the scene.
Beekeeper Gary Lane allowed some bees to land on his
hand Thursday, July 17 outside of Aric and Crista Attigs
home in Thief River Falls. Lane was called to remove a
swarm of bees that had congregated on the Attigs mail-
box and lawn. He said a worker bee typically finds a suit-
able location. Other bees follow, and they like to hang onto
objects. He thought they came from a property about a
mile away. The bees made their way into a beehive box,
which Lane removed that night.

Roseau seniors honored during recognition banquet

Volunteer Award winners
are Harriet Heinen of
Warroad and William Bill
Wagner of Greenbush. They
were honored at the 42nd

They will
also be hon-
ored at Church Night of the
Roseau County Fair on
Sunday, July 20.
Harriet Heinen was born
on May 22, 1934. She and
her husband, George (Joe),
raised their family on their
mink farm west of Warroad.
Harriet was always very
involved in her community
and after her retirement
from teaching, she continued
to be active in the Warroad
Area Community Center,
Roseau County Fair, 4-H,
Roseau County Historical
Society, and the list goes on.
Through the local Red
Cross, she helped establish
the ambulance service in
Warroad. Also through the
Red Cross, she has helped in
times of disaster, both local-
ly and around the country.
As busy as these activities
keep Harriet, she does not
forget the small things. A
friend said, Harriets home-
made buns seem to just
appear to the sick and those
in need of a loving touch. Its
the little things that make
her so loved and highly
regarded in the community
and among her friends.
William Bill Wagner
was born on October 10,
1938. Bill grew up on a farm
near Middle River and he
and his
w i f e ,
Shirley, set-
tled in
Greenbush
in 1992,
where both
w e r e
employed at
L i f e C a r e
Greenbush
Manor. He
r e t i r e d
from the
Mai n- t en-
ance Department there in
2009. He and Shirley con-
tinued to volunteer there
just as they had done while
working.
Bill is always willing to
share his talents as a singer,
and he and his group has
performed at countless nurs-
ing homes, senior centers
and churches. Bill is active
in the Greenbush-Badger
Lions Club. The club pur-
chases reading machines for
the visually impaired and
Bill has assisted many peo-
ple to obtain machines and
get them running.
Bill is also active in
Oiland Free Lutheran
Church. A friend said, Bill
fulfills each role with enthu-
siasm. Bills closing advice
often includes the following
thoughts: God is and has
been good! Trust in Him.
Both winners are invited to
attend the 2014 Minnesota
State Fair and the
Outstanding Senior Citizen
Volunteer Award Ceremony
which will be held on Senior
Citizen Recognition Day,
Thursday, Aug. 28.
The 2014 Senior Citizen
Volunteer Awards are spon-
sored by the Roseau County
Fair Board, the Minnesota
State Fair, the Minnesota
State Fair Foundation and
the Minnesota Federation of
County Fairs.
