COURSE | INSTRUCTOR
Visual Media | Cory Kerr
OBJECTIVES
To create a business card with a new and original logo to market the product/service.
Develop these things using Illustrator and InDesign.
PROCESS
I created both of the logos used within the stationary. For the record, I used the circle building
tool several times. Then I created the needle using the rectangle tool and the pen tool. Then I
changed it a little with the direct select and transform anchor point tool. After that, I combined
them all together with the shape combining tool and put it over the top of the record. For the
sound bar, created each bar individually and then moved them together proportionally. Then I
put a white line through the middle. For the text, I just used the text tool. I made all of these
things in Illustrator and then combined them to make the business cards and letterhead in
InDesign. Overall, I found using Illustrator to create my images and InDesign to bring it all
together very helpful.

Adobe Photoshop
OBJECTIVES
Learn to blend images together using masks while appropriately managing layers.
Learn to use flters and appropriate typography.
PROCESS
Throughout the entire project, I solely used Photoshop. I frst decided that I wanted to do
something about America and then I found this awesome picture of an American fag. I
enlarged it and then cropped in down to 8.5 in x 11 in correcting the levels, brightness and
vibrance. I found this picture of an old baseball player from the early 1900s and put it over the
background. I then added the flm grain flter to make it look a little better. I masked it so that
it would blend in with the background. I added the color to his eyes by making a selection and
then changing the color balance to just that selection. I chose the font for AMERICA with a
drop shadow because I thought it prompted nostalgic thought. I then added a layer with yellow
fll and applied it to just the text layer to make it not stark white. Over the entire thing I added
a warming photo flter to make it more vintage.

Adobe InDesign
OBJECTIVES
Begin to learn my way around Adobe software, specifcally InDesign. Learn how to create
project folders for effective project management. Incorporate basic design skills into frst
project.
PROCESS
I used InDesign for the entire project. I was given the image, logo, and content for this
fyer. I started with sketching several designs and picked the one that was the most visually
appealing to me. After creating the rudimentary design according to my sketch, I decided
to change some things. I chose to have graduate as the focal point and then follow-up with
leadership conference. Initially, the image consumed more of the fier, but then I decided
to reduce it in size and use the pen of the image to help create fow. I added the black and
grey boxes for repetition, rhythm, and fow.

PROGRAMS
Adobe Illustrator
OBJECTIVES
Create a variety of different logos to ft a personal brand. Gain a basic understanding of
Adobe Illustrator.
PROCESS
I used Illustrator to do all of these logos. Designing these logos was a really hard thing
to do. For the frst one, I just used some typography and then made it an object and
rotated it into the shape. To add the two white lines, I created shapes using the pen tool
and then manipulated them into shape with the direct selection tool and the pen tool.
For the second, I just used some typography and then added the line underneath with
the direct selection tool. I had three different text boxes for the different sizes of text.
For the fnal one, I created a circle and added a stroke to it. Then I added a larger circle
directly behind it with no stroke. Then I added the text on top using ruler guides to make
it centered.

OBJECTIVES
Learn to set-up and align an image for a folded, two-sided document. Learn to wrap text.
PROCESS
I set up the offset brochure design in InDesign. I used a lot of guiding bars to make
sure it was all aligned. For the cropped picture on the back, I used Photoshop and the
Polygonal Lasso Tool. To make the text move along the horizon, I used the text wrapping
tool. I used the bar along the top to create repetition and fow. I also used the shape
of my logo to help with that as well. I shaped my text boxes to ft well with the shapes
using the white arrow tool. I created my logo in Illustrator using the shape combining
tool. I also manipulated the text. I created alignment with the text and the pictures to
help with the overall feel.

OBJECTIVES
Find high-quality image to scan and use for full-bleed fyer. Use text boxes and other
shape boxes to create layout. Edit image within Word.
PROCESS
I scanned the image from November 2013 Powder Magazine. When doing it, I made sure
to size the image big enough so that I could enlarge it. Originally, I had the image with
the skier at the middle bottom, using most of the image. I then realized that it would
look better at the bottom and enlarged. I wanted the name to be the biggest thing, so I
contrasted it against the white background of the snow. To achieve even greater contrast,
I made the image slightly transparent. Microsoft Word let me do a lot although it was a
little trickier than InDesign.

PROGRAMS
Adobe Photoshop
OBJECTIVES
Use basic photography skills to capture an image. Then resize it. Afterward, use basic
Photoshop editing skills to make the image ft the mood we were trying to portray. Learn to
isolate a protion of the image and desaturate it. Also, use a flter over the image.
PROCESS
I used Photoshop for the entire project. I initially chose my color scheme upon looking at
my hat. I took a photo in good light, using the rule of thirds and lead room, making the
hat my focus. I used a Nikon DSLR camera. I then brought it into Photoshop and edited
for levels, saturation, sharpness, and color balance. To create the vintage look, I overlaid a
yellow color and then turned down the opacity to 8%. Using the eye dropper tool, I chose
the color for my text and shapes. Creating the baseball diamond was the hardest part. I had
to use the shape tool for all of the shapes except to at the triangle on home plate. For that
I used the pen tool. I turned down the opacity on all of my baseball diamond except for
home plate so that I could use it for my swatch.

TextWrangler
Adobe Photoshop
OBJECTIVES
Learn and apply basic HTML to create and shape a webpage. Optimize and size the logo
for web use. Understand and create content appropriate for a web site. Further design web
page using CSS. Learn how to compress fles.
PROCESS
For this project, I had to learn a lot. Ive taken one HTML class before, but that was back in
8th grade. For the HTML section of my project, I had a basic knowledge of how to do it, so
I was able to put together everything with the help of almighty Google. I used TextWrangler
and Notepad to do the HTML and CSS.
I learned how to make a CSS document change my HTML document and so I was able
to do that. While most of the CSS code was given to me, I did edit a lot of stuff myself to
customize it to how I wanted it to look. I changed the typeface and font color of all of the
text within the document. I used Century Gothic for my headers and Garamond for my body
copy. I also gave them some backup fonts as well. I used the colors from my logo, and a
couple other colors that matched, for the colors of my webpage. I got those hex numbers
using Photoshop. I added padding around the frst header to make it look better.I was also
able to center my image using some help from the internet. I had to pay extreme attention
to detail when writing out my code.
