LECTURES: The lectures follow the material presented in the text. Please retain and
follow the enclosed outline. The course will follow Chapters 1 through 10. It should be
good idea to read textbook before coming to class.
HOMEWORK:
Homework assignments will be given periodically. It is important to work these problems.
Homework will not be collected although there will be at least one problem on each of the
examinations VERY SIMILAR to a previously assigned homework problem.
EXAMINATIONS: There will be three exams during the semester and a final
examination. If a student has a legitimate conflict and will miss the exam that student
must reschedule the exam prior to the examination day. Only personal calculators that
are non-programmable can be used on examinations.
GRADE: Your final grade will be computed based upon your performance on exams and
homework assignments and scaled according to the following scheme:
Examination 1 -20%
Examination 2 -20%
Examination 3 -20%
Final Examination- 40%
Midterm Grades:
Midterm grades will be reported as “S” or “U” by February 29. A “U” will indicate
unsatisfactory performance, i.e., a “D” or “F.” The midterm grade will be determined by
the grade on the first examination.
Attendance Policy:
1
Students are encouraged to attend lectures and are responsible for all material presented
during lectures.
GOALS:
Achieve the fundamentals of structure-property-processing relationships in engineering
materials. Relate these fundamentals to the performance of the materials. Discuss the
major properties of ceramics, metals, polymers and composites. Present failure
mechanisms, such as fatigue, creep, and fracture. Introduce the micro-structural basis for
electrical, optical and thermal properties of materials.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
I expect all students in this class to respect the Georgia Tech honor code and behave in a
professional manner when it comes to academic integrity. Engineers have a responsibility
to the public who ultimately will use the products of their intellectual creations. Trust is
very important in the engineering profession and it begins well before we enter the
workplace. Any students violating the honor code will be turned over to the office of
Academic Integrity, Dean of Students to investigate the incident(s).
1. In this course, students are encouraged to study together (including working together on
the homework assignments).
2. Students are to neither receive nor give help to others during exams.
3. Calculators will be provided for use during exams. The use of personal calculators is
not allowed during exams.
4. Any student suspected of academic misconduct will be referred to the Georgia Tech
Office of Student Integrity.
