Summary

Crisis of youth unemployment is one of the biggest problems that the world is facing now a days.
One of the main reasons of it is lack of employable skills among the young people. In a recent
McKinsey survey 40 of the employers said that they almost have to fight to fill the entry!level
"obs# because the candidates do not have ade$uate skills. %ut 4& of young people said that their
"obs were not related to their studies and more than half of them view their "obs as interim and
thinking of leaving. If this goes on# by '0'0 there will be a shortfall of (& million employees
globally. )fter analy*ing the issue more deeply# it comes out that the main reason of this problem
is the disconnection between the perceptions variously held by employers# education providers
and the young themselves. +here is one solution of this issue and that is helping the young learn
relevant skills more effectively with co!operation and communication between companies#
governments and education providers. )mong some approaches one of the best is the
,practicum-. It is a practical course which involves hands on learning in the classroom or
training on the "ob. If such courses go under certification system# employees will know that skills
are transferable across companies and industries. ) good sign is many countries have already
started using this idea. .uch as China# India# )merica# )ustralia. .o# this type of remedy is very
much necessary and available to solve the talent gap in the coming decade.
Effects
Negative effects:
1. Less Job specific experience: /ven though young are imperious# they are having lack of
e0perience most of young people1s not capable to e0ecute their skills to the practical
challenges in the workplace. 2ithout e0perience young people cannot cope up with the
practical workplace .)s a conse$uence# recruiters are more concerned to recruit e0perience
adult worker rather than ine0perienced younger. .o# younger are unemployed.
2. Willing to explore different opportunities: In this article the author consider youth as a gift
and slack. 3ndoubtedly# young has more power to create and go beyond imagination# still
they are unemployed. +he e0planation following it young is fond of to e0plore new
4age 1 of
opportunities. In addition# most of them are indomitable# dauntless as a result5 they are very
passionate about their work which may lead them to unemployment.
!. Lac" of expertise: )nother important reason of 6oung unemployment is 7ack of e0pertise.
8ue to lack of e0pertise# younger is facing barriers to enter the labor market. )ccording to
the Coen"aerts et al# '009 shortage of business knowledge and e0pertise organi*ation not like
to recruit younger as a result young unemployment increasing day by day. If any uncertain
situation organi*ation are facing# organi*ation will first stop recruitment as a conse$uence#
younger not getting opportunity to enter.
#. $ising yout% population: )nother key issue of younger unemployment is a rising youth
population. +his is particularly appropriate in Middle /ast and :orthern )frica;M/:)<
where labor supply is more that labor demand;c.f. %iavaschinet al. '0='<
&. 'e(er )ob opportunities: 8ue to limited number of "obs# young people are having trouble
to find employment. Most of the organi*ations try to retain their employee which show the
way to less scope for younger graduate. +ake an e0ample# from '000 to '00( one third of "ob
seekers have find their "obs in )frica. )s a result# only few people get a chance to enter the
"ob industry. In the developing world# there has been found disconnection between the
number of young people seeking for "obs and the level of local economic activity.
*. +nade, uate S"ills: 2ithout having advanced skills# young people are facing problems to
penetrate the labor market. )ccording to the article# almost 4& of young people engaged in
a "ob which is not interrelated to their education. +o some e0tent# most of the young people
are unskilled according to their "ob5 as a result# they can survive for a long time. )long with
that# young people are having theoretical knowledge5 on the other hand# in a "ob market we
re$uire practical skills to cope up with the working environment. Considering the present
finding there is a clear suggestion that# by youth unemployment# the total economic loss was
e$uivalent to =0' of >84 in /urope# '0==. +he reason behind is the mismatch between
skills and "ob.
-. .%e failure of educational system? @egrettably# the education system is not up!to!the!
minute or realistic enough to assuage unemployment. If the education system were
both up!to!the!minute and realistic then the young people would get "ob after their
4age 2 of
graduation. )t the same time# education system is not focused on creativity or
practical things that make them lag behind in "ob sector. .imilarly# in competitive
world# very few education systems are focused on technology sides. If the young people
became smart enough in communication skill# creativity and technology then
unemployment problem could be less. +here is a less chance for a fresh graduate to
get "ob early. +he rise in the countryAs graduate unemployment should be blamed on
the current educational system# an economist and senior lecture r at the 8epartment of
/conomics of the 3niversity of >hana# 8r %aah %oateng# has argued. +here is a fact
that why the young people depends on their education system# 2hy not they are
trying by themselves to improve their condition. Moreover# they can take initiative to be
self!dependent. On the other hand# a lot of people are established through in this
educational system . Brom my point of view not only the education system but also the
self strategy is also accountable for young unemployment. In addition# education system
should be more technology based. )ccording to in this article near about 4& young people
said that "ob working is not related to their studies that are more or less correct. . )s a
conse$uent# lot of young people is losing their "ob. In China and many developed counties
give priority in practical based education and their students are also conscious about their
career. .o# from my point of view I think student1s sluggish activities are also responsible for
unemployment
/. $apid c%anges in .ec%nology: +he total of advancing technology is directly related to the
number of young unemployment. 6oung people are losing their "ob who cannot cope up with
modern technological instrument and whereas# the modern company are e0pecting that young
people are smart enough to feel fle0ibility in technology. +echnological ;IC+< encroachment
changes or introduces more efficient and effective ways in the production of more goods and
services. It will be argued below that the two workers affected by technological
advancement are those who have no skills on how to become accustomed to the
technological change and in part lose their "obs in a fully competitive labor market.
+echnology advances are running so far ahead that huge numbers of young people may not
be capable to go on up# and the future will convey even more somber financially viable
disorder.

. +nade, uate training? 2ithout suitable instruction employees are left to figure out
methods# technologies and protocols on their own# and the redundancies and missteps
can hurriedly add up to dilemma for any money!spinning big business young employees
who cannot do their "obs in point of fact# and this habitually leads to disappointment
s$uat productivity# errors# and low spirits. 2hen morale is low# young employees do
not attach around# and high staff turnover is a profligate# lavish way of doing
business.
0ositive effects? +hough# there is some negative impact that the young people are affected but
there is lot of positive thing that the young brings and make revolution.
=. +nnovation? 6oung leader are more pioneering. +hey know in their gut that inventiveness
and innovation are the life blood of their organi*ation. :ew!fangled thoughts can show the
way to programs that are superior to those that are already going on or planned in
the organi*ation and which would have been divested or never initiated had a better
idea or curriculum come along. .o# the operation of young leader is to search
continually for ideas and programs that are superior to the ones the organi*ation is
currently loyal to. +he writer refers to the young people as a gifted.
'. 1ard(or"ing? 6oung are more optimistic than old or middle age. +hey are dedicated to their
work and have patience that an old or middle aged people cannot do. On the other hand#
generally# they are honest and sincere toward their work because they are more ambitious and
having lot of energy.
C. 'lexibility: .ince# young people have more patience and can coolly take the decision so
many cases they are fle0ible in working. +hey know how easily should go forward. +he
employees who are working under them got a lot of fle0ibility in working environment. )t

capable. +hey possess an eagerness to prove themselves to adults and their peers. 6outh bring
energy and e0citement to business that leads to contagious productivity. +hey are more
willing to take on risky tasks and assignments. 2ith fewer outside!of!work commitments#
many may be willing to take career risks that e0perienced professionals would not.

knowledge of the latest hardware and software# automatically makes them a high!value hire

connection to information on a global level at a very young age. +his familiarity affords them
the ability to see ,outside of the bo0- when solving workplace problems and fosters the
ability to connect with a diverse audience.
E. 7a"e an +mpact and S%ape .omorro(8s 'uture 2 +here is a chance to teach a young
person the skills they need to succeed for a lifetime. Firing youth encourages their success
and prepares them for future careers. /mployers find younger people more willing to learn

brought up in the digital and internet age have a different approach to working life being
more independent# fle0ible and adaptable to change. 6oung people can bring important
insights into markets# especially in markets that change rapidly or are sub"ect to fashion# such
as music# computer gaming or clothing and footwear where the market is dominated by
young customers. Firing talented young people both benefits the business and prevents
competitors benefiting from their employment.
(. Lo(er recruitment costs 9 6oung people in school and college will be actively seeking
employment and many apply speculatively to employers reducing the costs of advertising.

/ngaging with schools and colleges can also help with the selection of good $uality recruits
while a reputation for offering "obs to young people ;especially if that reputation is associated
with good training opportunities< will encourage other young people to apply# thus widening
the pool of applicants from which the business can draw.
9. 'ast c%ange and agility 6 @ecruiting young people allows organi*ations to plan for the
future when older staff will be retiring. +eam working was enhanced when the team consisted
of a mi0 of younger and older employees. :othing more accurately describes the business
world these days than intense competition and rapid change. If you1re going to be successful#
you1re going to need agile individuals who are not "ust capable of fast change but also those
who literally look forward to it. Bortunately college graduates have a combination of youth
and an e0citement for trying new things that makes them more willing to accept and adapt to
rapid change. +hey1re also agile and as a result they are able to shift rapidly and fre$uently
between unrelated tasks.
:lternative courses of action
)fter reading the article we felt that youth unemployment problems due to having lack of proper
skills are a matter of serious concern. )nd# it is actually $uite high time to come with a great
solution to fi0 this problem. 8ominic %urton# managing director of Mc Kinsey G company
mentioned in his article that it is the "oint cooperation of the companies# governments and
education providers to deal with this problem. Fe also gave out some real e0amples how
companies in abroad are trying different ways to minimi*e the level of unemployment by
following the method of ,practicum- H which we agree with him too.
%ut# apart from that we feel there can also be other alternative ways which can help to minimi*e
the youth unemployment problems which are mentioned below with proper "ustification?
1. Ne( direction in education system: +he high level of unemployment occurs because of
mismatch of courses taught by education institutions and the actual skills needed by "ob market.
+he education system particularly at second level has constantly been critici*ed by different
stakeholders because of its concentration on the theoretical rather than the practical aspects. .o#
4age * of
we recommend >overnment through its line of ministry of education need to hire $ualified
people to formulate new education system and make a compulsory policy for all .chools
Colleges and 3niversities. +he policy that are to be formulated needed to be updated time to time
based on the situations and thus might help the youths to ac$uire proper skills to avoid the
unemployment problem.
2. Establis%ing ;lobal labor exc%ange partners%ip: >overnments of all least developed
countries should form labor e0change partnership with more developed countries such as 3.)#
>ermany# Iapan etc. )s a part of this partnership the least developed countries that have
unemployment problems may send their youths to the developed countries to learn the current
trend work skills and later they can work there. )lso the vice versa situation may occur where the
youths of the developed countries to send to least developed countries to share their skills and
e0periences in against of getting some benefit for it
!. <out% attitude c%ange programs: ) comprehensive youth employment policy should include
programs that are aimed at promoting an attitude change among young people. +he youth should
be enlightened on developing skills on number of things which has more opportunities. +hey
should be taught this thing that it is not only the university education on some particular field
which is going to bring them bright future rather it is the positive attitude which will bring them
prosperous future ahead.
#. Establis%ing strict recruitment policies: +here should be strict recruitment policies to hire
youths for the "obs. %oth the government and the companies need to set standards and make
policies for recruiting in both private and public sectors. +he policies should include that every
individual that are going to be hired for the "obs are going to be selected based on merit list. +hus
it will help the youths to work hard and as well as the companies would also be able to select the
right candidate.
&. .ax incentives for t%e companies t%at provide interns%ip opportunities and create )obs for
t%e yout%s: +he governments need to introduce modest ta0 incentives for enterprises that avail
internship placement and also create "obs for young people in every country. Many young people
at universities are finding it difficult to get internship placement as well as "obs an end up being
frustrated and develop a negative perception towards work. .o# we recommend that revenue
authorities of every country introduce ta0 incentives. +his move would encourage more
employers to be involved in progressive programs to deal with youth unemployment
*. 0roviding on t%e )ob s"ill training to t%e yout%s: Companies need to invest more and more to
provide on the "ob skill training to the youths. .uch method would help the companies to turn the
4age - of
unskilled youths into a strong work force. )s a result unemployment would definitely be reduced
up to a great e0tent. %eside that various motivational training can also be a great help to tackle
the youth unemployment problem.
-. +nvesting in Entrepreneurs%ip education in Sc%ools3 5ollege and =niversities: Binally one
great solution to youth unemployment problem due to lack of skill is by being an entrepreneur.
)s more and more youths are unemployed we feel /ntrepreneurship is one of the best solutions
for it. /ntrepreneurship is a driving force for initiating business ideas# mobili*ing human#
financial and physical resources for establishing and e0panding enterprises and creating "obs.
+he youth entrepreneurship can be ma0imi*ed through programs organi*ed by government and
by institutions through adding this in the education. )n entrepreneur can not only be employed
but also can reduce the rate of unemployment in the society. )part from entrepreneurship
education invested by the institutions# being motivated and having the ambition to be someone
great in life to start a business may help to be an entrepreneur.
5onclusion > $ecommendations
Crisis of youth unemployment is a big issue now and we have come to know that several
initiatives can minimi*e the crisis. One good initiative can be J4racticum1 which is discussed in
the article. )ctually the problem arises in the education system. E0 of the employer blame that
the youth doesn1t have ade$uate skills for the "obs and E0 the education providers say that they
prepare the graduates according to the needed "ob skills. Fere is the mismatch between the two
parties and here is the problem. 2hen this two parties will be united to build strong form of
educated you# the problem will be solved. +he best solution can be Jpracticum1 and to make it
work education providers and employers need to be on the same floor to provide that kind of
training to the youth.
$ecommendation: )fter analy*ing the article and all the discussion we think that there are
problems in both sides? Jeducation providers and employers1. %oth parties need to take some
re$uired initiatives to overcome this problem. 2e highly appreciate the idea? J4racticum1. +his is
what the students also want and education system should have this in their programs. 2ell
4age / of
developed countries like )ustralia# China! +he factory of the world have this practicum in their
education system and it is high time to follow them to make the situation better. %esides# there
are other initiatives which can be applied to overcome the problem. +hose are5 new direction in
education system which means education system should provide the appropriate education that
they will need in the "ob sectors. )nother good initiative can be? /stablishing global labour
e0change partnership which will enhance the practical "ob e0perience for the youth. +his can be
a very strong move for fi0ing this problem because young students will get the opportunity to
meet the developed companies of different countries and learn the skills needed for those "obs.
>overnment should also enhance helping hand to solve this problem. >ovt. can provide ta0
incentives for the companies that provide internship opportunities and create "obs for the youths
which will be highly appreciated be the companies and more companies will be interested in this
initiative and this way youth unemployment problem can be solved. +his will take time to solve
it completely but end of the day it will be solved if we all play our part to solve it. One last and a
great solution to the problem can be entrepreneurship. )s more and more youths are unemployed
we feel /ntrepreneurship is one of the best solutions for it. /ntrepreneurship is a driving force
for initiating business ideas# mobili*ing human# financial and physical resources for establishing
and e0panding enterprises and creating "obs. )n entrepreneur can make him self!employed and
also can recruit others. +his ways the problem gets solved easily.
