Application
ALSTOM traction instruments are
designed to operate under the most
severe conditions of shock,
vibration and atmospheric changes
and are ideally suited for use in
locomotives for both main line and
shunting operations. They are
included as standard equipment on
many types of locomotive and their
reliability has been proven over
many years service on all regions
of British Railways and on overseas
railways including India, Canada
and France.
Two basic types are available.
Moving coil instruments are used to
monitor such parameters as train
speed and motor load from suitable
shunts and transducers. In addition
simplex and duplex pressure
gauges, utilising Bourdon tube type
movements, are available to
monitor braking systems.
In addition to the basic pointer type
of moving coil instrument, a special
version is available with LEDs at
major scale markings and 3
character dot-matrix display. These
features are used for driver
information and signalling
purposes.
Construction
A strong clear polycarbonate
moulded case housing is used with
a bezel moulded in ABS plastic,
with flame retardency to UL94VO,
supporting a laminated safety glass
window. The groundplate
supporting the instrument movement
and terminals is moulded in Noryl
glass filled polyphenoloxide.
Particular attention has been given
to providing even, non-glare
illumination on the instrument dial.
The clear polycarbonate instrument
housing admits light to the
engraved dial from a light source
mounted behind the panel. The light
is reflected by the pointer and by
the white engraved and filled
markings on the dial which are then
clearly visible against the black
background.
Optional built-in illumination can be
provided in the form of an LED ring
of lights attached to the rear of the
instrument and powered by an
auxiliary supply. This option is
available with either one or two
brightness levels, the two level
option requiring a switch to be
fitted by the customer.
